"Marty Chinn in an Apple Thread: The Neverending Story 4." Or was it 5? I can't remember like you can, Rainman.

*shrug* It's how I do it--it's pretty fast. Wikipedia covers the shows I watch. If you really want it even faster, get an offline Wikipedia app.Marty Chinn said:Really, we're trying to advocate jumping through hoops is better than having the data at hand? Should we also google TV schedules and guide info for Cable and Satellite boxes to know what channel we should enter instead of looking at the onscreen guide too?
LyleLanley said:I'm pretty sure Plex can show video metadata, although I may be wrong as it's been a while since I've used it, if that's what's holding you back.
Marty Chinn said:Plex can since it's based off XBMC.
Isn't scraping just like getting album artwork in iTunes? If you had a huge media collection stored on a network drive I'd imagine it'd be pretty useful.krypt0nian said:He acted like Air Video was archaic, and used scraping as some sort of bullet point. To me that's crazy town.
I click play and it plays. To me that's God Tier.
Marty of course finds problems in everything. Like I said earlier, it's who he is. Tapx3. Twistx3.
He can't use Plex, cause he can't run a transcoder on his server. Why would he, when he can use XBMC?LyleLanley said:There we go! I've solved everyones problems. We can now stop arguing.

Oh ok. Yeah that's what i meant - thumbnails.krypt0nian said:Could be. Doesn't affect me. All my media is tagged and has thumbnails.
The issue was him trying to devalue Air Video by using this tiny bullet point.
julls said:He can't use Plex, cause he can't run a transcoder on his server. Why would he, when he can use XBMC?*stirs*
Marty Chinn said:Didn't see your edit till now, but yes, not having to worry about what file type it is, is my goal. Transcoding implies you have to worry because it has to be converted instead of it just playing. Live conversion of anything shouldn't be preferred over just playing it. In this day and age where we have fast enough processing that there isn't a need to convert on the fly, it seems archaic to me to have to do so. Native playing is always better than transcoding because anytime you convert something, you have a good chance of losing quality.
LyleLanley said:DAMN YOU, We were so close! I give up, either stick to using XBMC or convert your videos and use Air Video/Plex or transcode with those apps.
LyleLanley said:DAMN YOU, We were so close! I give up, either stick to using XBMC or convert your videos and use Air Video/Plex or transcode with those apps.
That reminds me, if you ever do get around to updating your server and get used to the idea of transcoding, you can set up air video to convert your files while it's transcoding so that you have a converted version of it when it's done.
Please, let it go.Marty Chinn said:Again, why would I want to convert, re-encode, lose quality in the process and on top of it take up more storage space on the server when I could play it natively?

It's never worth getting dragged into his utter nonsense. My bad.

In case no one knows, his setup IS a "cloud".

I've been preaching plex since they made their media server software. It's SO good but it doesn't get nearly enough attention as air videoJasoco said:I just wanted to chime in and say I love Plex. Especially since it's light-years ahead of XBMC in how it works. And the update that just came out today put it even further ahead. And that the iOS app update to go with the new software is also on the way. Can't wait. Plex is the greatest way to watch all my movies and TV shows from wherever I feel like. And Air Video is a nice companion for all the videos I can't put in Plex. Together they make a great combo. And both stream over the internet. Plex/Nine now has even better streaming and won't re-encode a video if it's already the right format for the iDevice.
I can't use XBMC. Its scrapers are horrible. Plex/Nine's scanners work so much better. While trying both XBMC and Boxee as well as Plex/Eight before September 30th, I was unable to get half my videos recognized correctly, when Plex/Nine came out, it got 99% of them with only a few mis-detections that were easily fixed. As long as the video is named correctly it works fine.
Plex just has more heart to it. The community is much better and the people behind it are just more like family.
But use whatever you want.

So yesterday I browsed around iPhoto, and then when I tried to sync my iPad just to get a few apps and songs over, iTunes started optimizing my photos for transfer... like all 7000 somethings again (I sync all my photo library). I said what the fuck and cancelled that shit.
Then when I accessed my photo library on the iPad, it was full of blanks. So whatever, I left it syncing overnight.
Today it seems to have synced all the photos, but it gained a whooping 13GB of "OTHER" which is nothing more than garbage files from the previous borked sync. So my iPad got full to the fucking brim. It says it has 0bytes available. Shit.
Apple fix this shit!
If I restore it as new it will fix that but it will lose all the savedata... and some of that is really important. What do you guys recommend?
Thanks; always wondered why my videos didn't show in iTunes properlyTobor said:I just rip the videos with Handbrake, tag them with Meta X, and throw them into iTunes. Works great, and I don't have to worry about any of this other shit.

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1119152After I get pissed and/or curious I do crazy stuff.. So I decided to get up really early today, go by a couple of Apple stores and check my chances of getting an iPad 2.
Around 5am I was at the West 14th store. My jaw almost dropped... 400+ waiting in line! 350+ were asian scalpers and they were up front of course. They had chairs and sleeping bags, clearly they had spent the night there.
20 mins later, around 5.20am, I was at the Upper West Side store. Line was smaller but again 200+. Once again the vast majority were asians and they were up front. Same situation, sleeping bags and everything. I did not even bother with the 5th Av and SoHo stores. I was looking for a 32/64 gig AT&T model, the ones that have the most demand so I did not even bother to wait in line. 200x2 = 400 iPads to be sold before me and I doubt the UWS gets high volumes daily.
I have nothing against Asians and I am not a racist. But I have much against these scalpers. All those being "liberal" and "open minded" saying US is a free country and everyone can do anything they want with their iPads once they buy them, essentially backing up the scalpers, well, you speak because you have NO idea what's going on in NYC. All the smarta$$ comments of "get up and go earlier" do not apply here. The asians have simply dominated. All those complaining that NY gets the most of the shipments, again, we are not buying them!! From what I have seen and read since launch day, I strongly believe that 90% of all iPad 2s sold in NYC go straight to the gray market.
So I am sorry to say this but for anyone in NYC, do not waste your time. This has been getting worse day by day and we are now at the point where it is simply impossible to get an iPad 2 from the Apple stores. Unless Apple does something I only see this getting worse until the gray market is saturated. It comes to show the power of masses...
That's because only like 6 or 7 of us actually have new iPads.SuperPac said:And this thread. Is. Bonkers. It's turned into let's rehash every criticism/complaint anyone's ever had (and some no one's ever had) about iOS instead of enjoying our new iPads and Smart Covers(tm). What the hell.

I honestly think that the first time I see a Smart Cover(tm) in the flesh, I'll change my mind and upgrade my iPad.

You can buy 2 per trip, but there is no purchase limit per customer. They tried to limit purchases last year, but they got bad publicity, especially from the story of this gaffer.Wallach said:Is there no purchase limit per customer or something?

Last year:
Credit card only
Apple ID required (I think)
2 per customer
This year:
Cash allowed
Apple ID not required
No limit per customer
