Apple iPad 2 |OT|

Does anyone have any app+keyboard recommendations? I think that is the way I am leaning towards going. Talk me out of it though if you think I am crazy.

Just got to see my first iPad 2 in person.

I do like how it feels lighter and thinner.

And I think the white looks awesome. Personally, I think it's a missed opportunity to make the logo on the back white too, though.

Really nice. Just wish the sidebar stayed on screen while I scroll. Or that there were more per row. (On my computer there's 3 per row. On the iPad, only 2 and a lot of empty space.

Also, by using a "Load as you scroll" interface, you break the site when someone leaves the page and comes back. I see way too many sites using this terrible design technique. It's cool to use, but it needs to be made so when you return, it reloads to exactly where you were. Even FaceBook uses this. It's a pain in the ass.

You should do what Google does for Image Search. It remembers where you were and reloads and scrolls you right back to your last position when you return.

Also, there's no visual notification that the page is loading, nor is there one when you get to the end of the list. So you can't tell whether you're at the end or not.
It's just a tumblr site.

Would it be possible to have a bluetooth gaming controller for ipad? Most of the touch-only games are way too simple and the games with virtual joysticks are usually unplayable. I think a sleek, compact controller would be great...

Was watching my iPad 1 last night in bed in darkness and it has the 'light bleed' thing - if it wasn't for people going nuts over it I wouldn't have even noticed, and it certainly doesn't affect the usage of the device at all.

Yes, they could even do this without anything new in iOS by getting it to pretend to be a bluetooth keyboard, but the problem is getting games to support it if it's done by a third party and not Apple itself.

If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, you should play The Incident using the iPod/iPhone as a controller, it's pretty fun. I hear Chopper 2 does this too, but I've never played that.

And there are YouTube videos of people using the Wiimote on a jailbroken iPad.

So use a game console then?

Tumblr has an iPhone version of its site, but not an iPad version. The iPad gets the broken full site version unless I set my agent to iPhone. Which I shouldn't have to do. Not that I can't use the site on the full version. Someone at Tumblr needs to tell the Tumblcoders to do something about this. Is the theme stock or custom made?

FileBrowser + Airport Extreme usb disk + ComicGlass = best iPad comic book setup EVER!

I attached a usb disk with my comic files to my Airport Extreme, got the FileBrowser app for $3, got ComicGlass app for $2. Then launched FileBrowser, added new machine from the menu, and simply input the LAN IP address of my Airport (you can find this in Airport Utility). Filled in a couple fields like network name, user name and password, which it stores.

You can then freely browser the disk in a finder style interface, click a comic file and go to Open With menu option. It will suggest Comic Glass and then copy the file to that app. Comic Glass launches and you're reading the book!

NO FILE CONVERSION
NO SYNCING THROUGH iTUNES
NO BS

This is the best way to do comics on the iPad! You can browse a massive comic collection from your iPad without need to have a computer turned on or store it locally on the iPad's limited space.

Time for today's question. :P

Pulse vs. FLUD

They are both awesome rss readers with a very nice (and similar) layout.

I like Pulse because I can update all my feeds at once, just dragging the screen down.
Also, because when I open a news in full screen view, I can get back to the grid view touching an icon in the bottom right part of the screen, or in the top left right of the screen. Both are very near to my fingers when holding the iPad.

I like FLUD because it loads much faster (or maybe I dislike Pulse because it loads horribly slowly).
However, I can't seem to update everything at once. And when I open a news, the way to get back to the grid view is to touch an icon placed almost in the center of the screen, meaning I have to move my hand and not just my fingers.

So far, I really feel like what I love about one is not in the other, and viceversa. :(

What about you?

One thing that bugs me is an oversight.

If you double tap Home and swipe left, you get a controller. It controls whatever media app is frontmost. If you have iPod running, it controls the song. If you have YouTube running, it controls the video even in the background. (Audio only of course) But, for some reason, it does NOT work with the Remote app. Why? I mean it would make sense to, but it doesn't.

Oh, and also you can't scroll inside embedded scrollable page elements on webpages in any browser.

Why does it make sense? the iPad is not actually playing anything, only controlling something else with the remote app.

Are you uh, sourcing everything or just depending on that little blurb in the corner? Realistically not a huge deal...although I remember many years back some guy C&D'd a friend for a desktop posted on his site, and the guy contacted the host and got the site pulled for a while. Just watch out for jackasses basically.

If you just want a minimal keyboard the Apple BT one is nice, I got mine on Craigslist for around $40-50 rather than the retail $70. It's a completely separate piece of hardware though, so could be a hassle depending on your use. There's a few case+keyboard type things but I think they're all small, like netbook keyboard small.

As for app, what will you need it for? I use PlainText or iA Writer (both plain text editors) and am looking into Essay, which is rich text through HTML. For now I have Pages for the more thorough formatting needs.

What he said re: Bluetooth controller could be killer if combed with hdmi out.

Don't you think? Practically a games console.

Shudder nintendo shudder.
An updated Apple TV would work better for the use and be $440+ less (iPad HDMI adapter and cable cost is the $40+ part of that). The iPad could be a portable console with built in screen though.

I think you can. Try using two fingers.
I think he mentioned in a previous post using two finger gestures, wonder if that overrides the two finger scroll.

Whoever recommended minimal folio?

Thank you so much.

Worth every single cent and it is such a great interface/portfolio app.

One of the folios I have has 400+ images n it doesn't skip a beat.

(have to note you gotta ITunes photo sync or it might have issues.. )

That aside...fucking brilliant. 8 star app. You can flip through the thing so easily and awesomely.

hey guys, about these empty boxes... how do i get rid of them? i loaded the updates on itunes and synch them. still not working. i deleted them on itunes. still there. manually deleting doesnt work :/

Somewhere way back in this thread someone complained about how ComicZeal imports all your comic files into one big database, so I've avoided it. Tried ComicFlow but the lack of organizational tools was pretty annoying. Now I'm quite enjoying Bookman, which is free, doesn't maintain a big-ass database file, lets you add files via FTP, and allows you to organize your comics into different bookshelves. That ComicGlass looks interesting too. The website's not great, though, so I can't really tell what its unique features are.

Home Sharing is the most worthless thing ever. Come on Apple, why do I have to have ITunes actually running for this to work? Shouldn't there be a background service taking care of it? I'm on my couch and decide I want to start streaming my library and oops..I can't, I need to go to my computer and run ITunes first.

Nothing wrong with th comic zeal database. It has A very robust file organization and edit/sort system (speedy) so... You shoulda gone with it. It's great

It's not like you want to use iTunes shitty little windowed file box to "manage files"

12,000 iPads were sold on eBay in 2 weeks:

I'd be interested to see a Craigslist figure, but that data would be hard to obtain.

Wow, surprised the model I got, 64 GB wifi, is only 14%, but not surprised the lowest end model is the highest.

that's weird. Looks like you tried all the things I would. Have you tried just turning the iPad off and on agai?

Because iTunes needs to be on, it's the most worthless thing ever? I can see how it mig be an inconvenience, sure, but if you're hurting that badly,i guess you could just not use it. Personally, iTunes is oneof those things I always have running, so it's no big deal for me either way.

Thanks for the suggestions. My next step is more iPad theme modification. I was already looking into the sidebar issue and I'm pretty sure it's a simple CSS glitch.

I have no problem with people contacting me to have their image sourced or taken down. I found these images from a variety of places and I have no idea who the original owners are at this point. I'll add a note about that though. The site isn't for profit this isn't a problem for me (in fact, I've made $0.50 off 1000 page views so far, lol).

I'll look into the scrolling issue and see if there's a better script for that, as well. In regards to the number of images per row, I might write a script that detects which browser the user has and scales icons accordingly.

Like another guy said though, the site indeed runs on Tumblr, so there are some limitations here. This is a side project for me and was only started for fun. Tumblr is the cheapest option for a photoblog these days, especially since I don have to pay for hosting if the page views get uncontrollable.

Yeah, I would actually turn off the iPad. Hold the corner button till the Turn Off slider comes up. Then turn it back on after it finishes powering down. That fixed this same thing for me once on my iPhone.

Hmmm....

So currently I have a 1GB Data Plan on my phone. As it is I am close to that cap every month.

My plan was to up my data on my phone and just hotspot my iPhone to give my iPad WiFi whenever I needed it... However I was talking to bell and my options are somewhat limited.

For 2GB of data per month I lose out on some features (Fab 5 instead of Fab 10) but it only costs me $5.00 more per month.

For 3GB of data per month I maintain the same plan as I have now, but it costs me $30.00 a month more then I am currently paying.

If I upgrade my iPad to a 3G model and pay for a seperate tablet data plan it costs me $40.00 per month for 2GB.

I guess I am just wondering what do you guys usually have for monthly usage? I think if I upped my plan to 2GB per month and just treaded carefully I wouldn't go over, but I really don't know how much bandwith an iPad really burns through.

Any comments are appreciated.

On my iPhone, I have 100MB per month. Near worthless to try tether my iPad unless I really need tovas the iPad tends to eat through more.

Again, makes no sense. Remote app is a remote control, not a media player. I assume it,s possible to actually control iTunes with the app while playing something on the iPad.

Regardless, you wouldn't expect the volume rocker on the iPad change the volume on the remote iTunes would you?

I would love that. I mean, regardless of what's to be expected and everything, I would find it incredibly useful to be able to control Remote in both of those ways.

They store all imported comics in their proprietary database. They even say on the product page:
Please keep in mind that whatever comics you add, iTunes will want to back up. So don't add tens or gigabytes at once or your next sync will take a while!
No other comic book reader I'm aware of does this. Plus with Bookman I can manage everything through an FTP client, or better yet, through the app itself.

Anyway, I realize ComicZeal is beloved and probably for good reason, but I'm happy with my free options.

Any word on a jailbreak for the iPad 2? Last weekend they said it would be out this week. I basically just want it so I can tether to my work phone (non iphone) and change the icons on the launcher

Hey guys. I'm not really in to Apple stuff but I want to get an iPad as a slightly belated 60th birthday present for my mom. There's a deal at a local retailer where I could get a 3G first gen iPad for 399 euros (~566 dollars, all electronics here are pretty expensive) so I'm wondering if there are any really noticeable performance differences between 1st gen and 2nd gen models? I don't want to spent like 500 euros on an incremental update which I'm not sure is even out here yet, but I still think an iPad would make a cool present.

I just ordered Gen 1 today too.
Sure... the new one is much more powerful. But I can't see your 60-year old mom needing that. I can't even think of needing the camera, but that's just me.

Nice. One of my directors just sold me an extra unused 16GB iPad 2 she had bought on a whim. Now I don't have to worry about getting my wife a birthday present, lol.

yes. There is just no reason in this day and age where a streaming service shouldn't be done via a background service, much like how microsoft does it with media sharing in windows.

I think old people would enjoy FaceTime, but that depends on if she knows other people with iPhone/iPod 4 or iPad 2s.

Okay I wasn't quite prepared for just how much Apple products hold their value. Just sold my iPad 32gb for £365. I'm amazed, it's only cost me about £100 to upgrade to the new one. It's like an investment.

Paid for iswifter through in app purchuse, I exchanged the ipad cause of backlight leaking now I have to pay for it again? :(

Yeah, I sold my 16 gb wifi for $350, 1 week after the iPad 2 launch (I guess the person didn't want to pay sales tax for a new/refurbished model). I met some guy in line that sold his iPad in December (anticipating the iPad 2), and got most of his money back after using it for most of a year.

Google it, but I think you don't have to pay. Don't hold me on that though...

Fucking finally! I have a 3G 16GB reserved for tomorrow lunch time at an Apple Store.

I've been religiously spamming the retail store reservations page all week in a vain attempt to reserve one, and it finally paid off.

Never again will I order from the apple online store on launch day. 3rd party retailers or reservations seem like the way to go.

Now, time to hoard some apps.

Agreed. Actually, I think instead of having to swipe the bottom to the right, just put all the controls in a nice area in the top part of the screen overlayed over the faded application and make it so hitting home on the iPad brings the app back like it does on the iPhone instead of going Home.

Utilize that space up there! But do it in a nice way so as not to look cluttered.

But they won't. So I'd settle for being able to control Remote with that screen. INCLUDING the volume because it's genius. Since Remote controls everything in iTunes anyway.

Please be in iOS5 or the next Remote update. Please!

VadernooooOOOooo

Leave the iPad media controls to controlling iPad media!

I use the remo app in my room. So let's say I get some music playing and sit back with my iPad. After a bit I forget about my iTunes playing and head downstairs. I decide I want to play something on my iPad. Or let's say I use the remote to turn off my iTunes befor got ot bed. I don't want it still linked in the morning! How would I revert control back to my iPad? I don,t want to have to close an app via multitasking tray just to achieve something else.

What difference does it make to double-click home then hit remote for all your REMOTE needs? Why hi jack an iPad function for that?

mrkgoo said:

By opening the iPod app (or any other app that makes use of this feature on your iPad) and starting playback. The controls for that app would then take over. So basically it controls whatever the last supported app you were playing back from.

Problem solved.
