Apple iPad 2 |OT|

So, my ipad fell from my bed the other night and hit the bottom part of my nightstand..

Are they gonna replace it? Seems somewhat ridiculous that a 10 inch drop is enough to shatter the glass.

I've heard good things about the update on the Nook Color (Flash, a new app store, etc,.) but after getting use to the awesomeness that is the iPad, I couldn't go back. From the KORG & Garageband apps to the awesome array of games, I love the iPad.

If someone wants something that does more, I would recommend paying the extra money and getting the Nook Color (which is basically the cheapest Android Tablet out there). If you want something sort of an actual laptop, I would recommend the iPad 2.

I mainly read pdfs or technical manuals so I need a device that can properly display them plus has some of the extras you mentioned.

I'm currently testing a Nook with the latest update. I like the Nook but the default PDF reader stinks (and you need to buy two of the recently released pdf apps). The web performance is slower than the Xoom and Ipad 2. The other issue, as much as people complain about the closed Apple experience, at least there is a treasure troth of apps to choose from, whereas B&N has locked out the Android app store and you must purchase from their limited store.

The form factor is sort of a toss up, depending on your preferences. The Nook is lighter .9875 pound vs. 1.33 pounds (iPad 2) but you get bigger real estate.

Of course, there is also the price difference (the Nook is half the price of the iPad and with the xda community, you can make the Nook into a Gingerbread or Honeycomb tablet or unlock the Android app store).

And you seem to have some rather bad luck with electronics. Hope Best Buy hooks you up with a new iPad soon.

My iPad 2 fell off a table onto a tile floor and didn't break the glass. So I guess you just got unlucky. Not sure if they'll replace it though.

Apple don't cover accidental damage, but if you go to an Apple Store, and be nice about it, there is a chance they could change it.

If you want to be slighty dickish, go to an Apple store when you know there will be a good amount of people there (if there is a line). They could be more inclined to change it then to make themselves look good.

Is that blood on the shattered part?

Anyways, my fiancee had her iPad fall of the bed...the side was dented and the volume button got jammed so that we couldn't adjust the volume level at all. Took it to the Apple store, the guy took it to the back, came back and said that they don't usually cover accidental damage but he would make an exception, and got us a new iPad. It's worth a shot bringing it to the Apple store.

I don't use Atomic (iCab!!!), but anyway, there should be an option somewhere in settings that you can go to called "Browser ID". Adjust this to something that is not Mobile related - there should be loads of options.
And if this doesn't work I'm guessing you have some cookie set to go to the mobile sites or their search string is using the mobile URLs. If it's the latter you'll have to edit the URL if possible, otherwise bug the devs about it.

Welcome to physics yo. You can bend that glass to an insane degree, and you can't scratch it with most metals. Yet if you impact it with enough force in the right place it will easily crack.

It's a shame, but it's not ridiculous.

Anyone have suggestions for a messenger bag to just hold the iPad 2 and a few accessories (charger), and maybe a 3DS or some other small items?

I have a big messenger bag from Timbuk2 and love it, but sometimes I don't need that much space.

I agree that the PDF reader isn't the best but it does get the job done. If you need the bigger screen, cameras and like the Android OS, the Xoom is the way to go. If you want a decent, cheap Android tablet that you can boot, Nook Color. I do feel that the Android OS will become as popular and robust as the iOS but that will take at least another year or so.

Thanks for the well wishes. I hope Best Buy get my iPad 2 soon. I would just order it from the Apple store but I have $600 in Best Buy gift cards :/

Do you think iCab is better than Atomic? I've been pretty happy with Atomic except I notice on GAF (using chohler's webapp) a lot of times pages don't load right. Like they'll load what seems like a cached version, and I have to hit reload to get the whole thing. This happens especially when I update one of my posts.

Hmm I haven't tried Terra but I see it's free, I'll check it out later.

I do like Atomic a lot except for the problem I just mentioned.

I never used Atomic, so I don't know if it is better, but I never wanted to use any other browser since I got iCab. It did anything I ever wanted it to do over the last 8 months, so I see no reason to go anywhere else. I would happily delete Safari if I could, as I never use it - except when an App forces it up.

10 inch drop is a lot. No? Plus its really thin.

FYI You're fucked.

Ive seen so many people with cracked iphones. Cracked Ipad? I really doubt they'd replace it for free.

Alright so ive been using iCab on my iPad for the last few weeks and its really sharp, except I cant figure out how to set the homepage. Ive looked up and down the setting but nothing jumps out at me. Is it possible to set it to anything else?

OK I'll give it a try, thanks.

I wish there was browser that would let you customize the interface. I like iLunascape for example, but I want the buttons on the bottom on the left side.

Click the icon to the right of the bookmarks icon, and there is an option to "Set as Homepage"

I used to use iCab but have been using Sleipnir since it got updated to be a universal app about a week ago. Not nearly as full featured as iCab but the overall feel of the app is nicer I think...and it's free. Their page shows the UI stuff it has in action.

I've got some iKlear cleaner (spray + cloth) for my MacBook, is this good for my iPhone and iPad 2 as well?

Haven't decided on a case yet but want to clean off the screen, doesn't look nice after playing with it while eating Churchs chicken lol

Act sheepish and apologetic when you go in and they'll probably replace it. Act arrogant (don't mention the word "ridiculous") and they likely won't.

Just wipe the glass off with a cloth. Someone here once mentioned using a cleaner might strip the glass of some coating that makes the touchscreen more receptive.

This is the book I saw in beta form back in January, prompting me to write this piece on Push Pop Press’s phenomenal design and experience work. It’s a good book, judged simply by its content, but anyone who works in UI design ought to buy this if for no other reason than to study its design. $4.99 on the App Store.
So who else bought this app? Is it too soon to bring the knives out?
closer to a magazine than to a book

So is this thing readily available yet? Just got a few extra bucks, so i'm getting my wife an ipad and myself a xoom.

i haven't really started looking, but first searches around the net show i may not be able to find one an ip2 or even a xoom for that matter. Especially in so cal where all these people pay ridiculous prices for rent and mortgage, but still have enough left in the money pile for a luxury car and an ipad 2...

lol i'm so bitter right now...

here is hoping i can find one at toys r us or radioshack. i'm trying to think of some places people might not expect it to be...but word travels fast and it's been a few days (weeks?) since they started selling them at those places.

i do love being "on the hunt" though...i enjoy my buys so much more that way.

The only place you may be able to find one at the ready is probably at the Apple Store. Most retailers (Best Buy, Target, etc,.) are having a rough time getting any in stock. Also, the website only has a 1-2 week waiting time. I'm cancelling my reserve at BB, getting my refund and going the Apple route.

You can use that to check Target stock. I know there's a post that has Best Buy and Wal-Mart too, can't find it right now though.

Getting a xoom seems crazy. Have you researched the transformer?

Can you use Garage Band to create electronic music?

Or more precisely, is it a good tool to for this type of music?

There are a ton of synthesizers(72!), multiple drum machines, and a pretty good sampler. It's an eight track recorder with a host of instruments for $5. You can't go wrong.

I'm having a lot of fun messing around with it. Here's a good review:

http://arstechnica.com/apple/review...ipad-a-killer-app-for-budding-songwriters.ars

The included digitally modeled synthesizers also boast an impressive array of sounds, from the theremin-like "Fifties Sci-Fi" to the dance-floor-inspired "Warp Lead." The presets are arranged into bass, lead, pad, FX, and "classic" categories. Further knob tweaking can be done, though each synth only offers four different adjustments which change depending on the preset. The "Classic Synth Bass" offers controls for cutoff, resonance, filter decay, and filter sustain, while the "Digital Wave" lets you tweak cutoff, glide, volume attack, and volume release. The combinations possible between the 72 presets and virtual knob tweaking should satisfy all but the pickiest users.

Yep I do this all the time, it's more than up for the task.

Highly recommend getting a camera connection kit dongle and a USB MIDI keyboard though (I use an M-Audio Oxygen 49).

Also I use an iPad 1. There are better apps designed specifically for electronic music, but Garageband is a good general purpose tool. Most of the time you will probably be working with the keyboard or the sequencer, although the drum stuff is decent as well.

My personal favorite apps for just messing around are Xenon Groove Synthesizer (very easy to learn although I would recommend skimming through the instructions) and Korg iElectribe (another very easy to learn... drum machine/beatbox).

I just bought Korg iMS-20 which is the exact opposite of the two apps I just mentioned. Incredibly flexible synthesizer but a steep learning curve. I never used a Korg MS-20 but supposedly this is a perfect replica, able to do everything the MS-20 can. It also has a built in KAOSS pad which is cool since there isn't a standalone KAOSS pad app.

Some others that I use:

SoundThingie, Mugician, Gliss, Dub Siren Pro, SoundPrism, iORGEL.

Some of those can't really be used to make a complete song, but you can save clips that you make from them and open them up in Garageband or whatever.

Also StudioMini XL and NanoStudio are very good alternatives to Garageband. There are advantages to each of them and I play around with all of them regularly.

(I hope I got all those links right, otherwise just google search them and you should find them).

EDIT: Korg apps are on sale until may 31 not tomorrow.

Ordered an iPad (white, 32GB, wifi) from the Apple website last weekend. It should be here on May 10, so I have some time to figure this out...but what are the consensus best cases for the iPad 2?

Is there a way to bring back the virtual keyboard without having to go into settings and disabling my Bluetooth keyboard every time?

Also, any drawing/sketching app recommendations, as well as styluses?

I picked up a smart cover with my iPad when I bought it, but also bought the Targus case/stand off Amazon thinking it would be better. After using both, I've stuck with just the smart cover since the Targus case made it bulky and just not feel as great to use.

It all depends on your style and what kind of protection you're looking for. You have folio type cases for a professional look, cases that make the iPad look like a book, skins for the back and/or front, shells for the back, etc. So...what kind of case do you need? We might be able to help you more with this info.

So happy, my 16GB Black Ipad Gen 2 is finally shipping out. Sadly, Apple only shipped it out a few days early. But the estimate they give on their site is pretty accurate.

I like the Smart Cover, but I want some protection for the iPad just in case it falls on the deck.

Fuck me...

Is streamtome better than airvideo?

I bought airvideo a week ago and wish it did music and pics...now I find this... :(

Splash looks neat, and honestly, can do everything and more if it works right.
