And if the plane were to crash Apple would know exactly where it crash lands. As long as the plane doesn't update its firmware.

What's the GAF consensus on iPad comic book reader apps? There's so many floating around that vary greatly in price so I'm wary of dropping money on too many just to play around with them.
I only tried ComicZeal because someone over here recommended it, but I can tell you it's awesome.

I am thinking about buying ComicZeal but where do you find comics to download?

About Music Apps: what's the best software for a noobie interested in electronic music production? There are a lot of options: KORG iELECTRIBE, iSequence, Looptastic... What do y'all recommend?

I tried Comic Flow as it was recommended here. It's very basic, but how much functionality do you need when reading comics? It marks unread comics as new and keeps note on which page you stopped reading. Oh, and it's free.

Do the paid apps have any advantages worth paying for?

i feel like a broken record but comic zeal is my #1 most used app. only thing in my quick launch bar besides my internet browser.

it's glorious in it's responsiveness, zooming + organizing options.

I've had my iPad2 for a week now and Comic Zeal is by far my most used app. I think I remember some people kvetching about having to sync via iTunes with it, but its fine for me.

Got a WordPress blog by any chance? QuickWordPress looks like it might be ok, here's a writeup on it.

I've suggested blogging use to the Essay dev (since it does everything in HTML) and it sounded like he's already thought of it, so hopefully some kind of functionality in that direction comes eventually.
Yeah, I saw that one (and thanks for pointing me to the write-up) but it doesn't do rich text as far as I can tell. It has an awkward drop-down menu for adding HTML codes, but you still can only "preview" RTF, you can't actually write in it.

The whole point of writing in RTF is so you can go straight to publishing without getting bogged down in markup codes (that's why every blog platform in the last decade does it natively through a web interface) so unfortunately this doesn't really do the trick. :-( Essay does seem more promising in that regard, though...

I was kvetching. but not just for the comics transfer and import process but for how it impacts backup time, as well.

I still enjoyed the hell out of comic zeal for almost a year but after a few issues with mandatory backups before OS updates taking hours cuz of the custom comic zeal database, I had to switch away from it.

since my needs for organization and reading view options are very minimal, I moved onto comic flow.

Ah, ok. I haven't run into that but I can see it being super annoying.

12 touchscreen stylus roundup: http://www.macworld.com/article/156560/2011/05/touchscreen_stylus_roundup.html

Each of these styluses has its pluses and minuses, but for specific uses, some stand above the rest. I found the Wacom Bamboo Stylus to be my favorite writing/drawing hybrid, while for all-around usage (writing, drawing, and navigation), the Kuel H10 excels. The AluPen was my favorite for focused sketching, while the Virtuoso Touch Stylus & Pen was the best touchscreen-writing tool. Finally, the NomadBrush, while not at the top of my list for all-purpose sketching, still merits a mention for the most interesting implementation of a touch-sensitive stylus I've seen.

You know, after you said this, I ran into some of the problems you mentioned. I transferred probably about eight .cbr files to Comic Zeal via iTunes. And it took forever to sync the iPad.

Then when the iPad finally synced, I went into Comic Zeal and it was importing the comics, which was taking forever.

I downloaded Comic Flow and though it did seem a little simpler, it worked a lot snappier.

I may seem crotchety at first but my kvetching is always.......

Ordered my ipad2 today!

The OP has allot in insight into first part accessories, what about 3rd party? There are dozens of cases out there.

Does anyone have any recommendations of alternatives to the Smart Cover? Is there a particular page in this 42 page thread that has allot of case discussion..

Conde Nast to Offer In App Subscriptions for iPad

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/conde_leapfrogs_hearst_in_ipad_digital_bgkiHuL47Frm9mB4y2V3RI

The New Yorker will become the first publication from the S.I. Newhouse, Jr., empire to be available via subscription on the popular tablet, and it will happen early next week, said a source familiar with the situation.

The deal means Condé will actually beat rival Hearst in the iPad subscription derby. Hearst said yesterday it was going to start selling subscriptions and single copies of Esquire, O: the Oprah Magazine and Popular Mechanics via the iPad effective with the July issues, available sometime next month.

Condé is expected to make the New Yorker available next week to capitalize on coverage of Osama bin Laden's death.

But by the end of the May, Condé will have the seven other magazines that are currently selling single-copy-only editions on the iPad available via subscriptions, including Wired, Golf Digest, Glamour, Vanity Fair, Self, Allure and GQ.

The deal will involve drastically slashing the single-copy price of the digital issue to $1.99 from the $4.99 price tag for the digital New Yorker and GQ -- the same as the newsstand price -- and from $3.99 for digital Glamour and Wired.

Annual subscriptions for each title will sell for $19.99
.

Hey, maybe now I can check out The New Yorker if it's not 5 bucks per issue.

I totally would recommend for new ipad owners to wait on buying ComicZeal, as Comic Reader Mobi is about to return to the App Store any day now after a yearlong ban. Zeal hasn't had an update in nine months either and could use one.

$20 a year is a great price. Also, extra Lol's to the people who thought Apple's subscription model would cause publishers to leave iOS.

Publishers are finally signing on after Apple relented in the face of a unified boycott. The month plus delay for any publisher to agree to terms wasn't for nothing... For instance, Time magazine announced free iPad subs to any print subscriber, something not allowed under the original policy.

Overall, I do think the draconian subscription rules are slowing availability of publications, so I wouldn't count this as validation of Apple's tactics yet. It's certainly not speeding long-awaited services like comic subscriptions to iPad. All comic sales are still a la carte, and a great service like Marvel Digital Unlimited is still not available on iPad.

It's kinda ugly but I like Air Video's new video controls UI.

Way less obtrusive than Apple's style.

Oooh that's nice. Wish they would add the file name to the overlay, though. There's even a spot for it right there at the bottom in the middle.

Why did apple ban the app for a year?

I downloaded Chu Chu Rocket recently, only to find that it doesn't work on the iPad 2. When you try to start it, the screen just flashes white for a split second, and then crashes.

Looking at reviews, this is apparently the case for everybody.

What are the chances this will be fixed, and can I get a refund?

It's because publishers are getting reasonable terms, not the 30% pole up the arse. If Apple sticks to its guns for every content distributor they will bleed publishers and middle-men.

Yeah, this move by Conde Nast has more to do with lagging sales. Dropping the price and offering cheap subscriptions will certainly result in higher circulations for their magazines, so i guess it's worth a shot. However, The Daily only had 800,000 downloads (resulting in a $10 million loss!) so in-app purchases is not the answer. What the iPad magazine publishers should be aiming for are better designed apps and automatically scheduled background downloading of content. And tell Apple to make the lowest priced iPad model 32GB :P

Apple changes the rules anytime they feel like it: FT won't give up subscriber relationship to Apple

I'd recommend cloud readers as it is free and available right now. There is no guarantee that CRM will ever be back in the store :(. The ban was supposed to be lifted on April 16th, and the developer has applied to be reinstated in the program, but still no response from the Apple AppStore team.

the developer hid some USB functionality in the app after the Apple reviewer had told him to remove it, similar to what the Camera+ guys did with Volume control buttons. The Camera+ guys weren't banned for a year though—they were back just in time for the lucrative Christmas period—and there are many alternate camera apps. There really isn't any other comic app with all CRM's unique features :/

Don't sugarcoat it. It wasn't just USB functionality, it was an exploit that took advantage of a flaw in the old API's, and he tried to hide it instead of removing it at Apple's request. Apple added the official file syncing support through iTunes right after that, anyway.

Alright guys, I'm looking for a super portable stand for my iPad 1, something that can fit into a small bag very easily without taking up much room.

As far as functionality, I don't need it to be super sturdy, because I won't be intensively using it for touch when its in this stand, I'll be using it for taking notes in class with my bluetooth keyboard. I already have a sturdy Griffin A-Frame but it really is bukly and is for home use mostly.

I would get the Apple Dock but no Landscape :|...and it's a bit expensive.

Any buys or DIY methods?

Smart cover? Although it makes you limited to landscape.

Forgot to say that I'm a peasant on an iPad 1.

This is a thread for the iPad2 so I'm sure everyone assumes you are talking about it. You should state up front you have a 1 in the future so peeps can help better.

Yeah I know, that's why I said I forgot to mention it (and edited). Thanks.

I think I may have found something on Amazon, though it looks flimsy. People also say that cheap ass business card holders from office depot work, might have to check that out.
