the lack of tabbed PDFs is a little bit annoying, and some of the annotation options and customisability SEEMS a little bit more robust in iAnnotate, but for the most part I don't think I'll be going back after discovering GoodReader.

if I do go back to iAnnotate, it will be because I miss having the tabbed PDF browsing option.
oh man, tabbed pdfs would be nice in goodreader. I hope someone has suggested it to the devs

So I recently ordered an ipad 2 and now I am on the look for a nice case, but I honestly cannot decide because there are too many. I would guess some people here have tried quite some cases, so are there any recommendations (or must haves)?

Can anyone recommend me a good cheap stand for the first iPad? A DIY ghetto stand is also fine.
I was trying to find one to use at the kitchen table in various stores and couldn't, then my wife asked if her cookbook stand would work.

It works perfectly. It's been in the kitchen for like 5 years and I probably looked at it 10000 times and it just never occured to me lol.

It's basically this but luckily with a much smaller ridge on the bottom. Works like a champ.

That's not the worst thing. Even after paying for it, ads pop up at every opportunity (switching streams, exiting a stream to search for another, going back to the Home Screen and reentering the app greets you with another ad), and now they have an in-app paid subscription for no ads and HD streams for only about a month or so.

And yeah, it's not universal but I couldn't find any other alternative at the time so I just bought it. I wouldn't recommend its current version at all.
OH GOD. Justin.tv is probably the worst devolution of an app I've ever seen. I was shocked when they started charging for the app ($5 for something that was not improved and free for months? uh ok) since it was pretty terrible to begin with but oh well at least it was an excuse for the awfulness of it on the iPad. I just assumed they would make a proper iPad version some day and as long as it was ok I'd bite the bullet and pay for it after having the no-longer-free version for so long.

So then the big update comes and I'm pumped until I see they charge WEEKLY for the HD streams. Such a terrible idea, sure I want to watch NASL while having dinner or sitting on the couch but a weekly subscription in addition to the $25 I paid for the content already? Unreal. And the ads, which were bad already on the paid app, got literally twice as common.

I'm looking for an iPad 2 stand. Ideally it would have the following characteristics:

- Small/simple
- Supports portrait and landscape
- Supports an angle that works well with Facetime
- Works with the smart cover on
- Allows for the iPad to be charged while in portrait mode

The closest 2 I've found are http://www.twelvesouth.com/products/compass/ and http://www.groovystand.com/collections/frontpage/products/square_ipad_stand.

The 1st is a bit on the expensive side, while the 2nd is close to perfect but doesn't allow charging while in portrait, and it doesn't look like you can remove/peel back the smart cover without removing the iPad from the stand.

Any other suggestions?

Can't you revert to an older version with fewer ads?

That would be require a bit of foresight; he'd need to have saved the older versions elsewhere when he downloaded the update. The App Store doesn't offer older versions for download.

So I finally tried using the photo app as people have been sending me photos. It appears I can't sort, create folders or albums on the iPad itself. Wtf is this shit apple god dammit. Now I just have this giant folder full of shit. I suppose they want you to just use iTunes to do it all but fuck, how hard can it be to add a damn plus icon for folders and allow me to drag pics into it.

Unless I am missing something. Looked online and found no answers

All of that is coming in iOS5, as well as photo editing. Right now, you do have to use iTunes.

It can't, but it was fixed and now can be done in iOS 5.

Does anyone reading this thread print directly from an iPad? Do you have one of those HP wireless printers that works with AirPrint? Are they decent? How hard are they to set up? Or, if you're not airprinting using one of the HP printers, what method are you using and how hard is it for a non-tech person to set up on their own?

Thanks. Was venting a bit because literally I was in the app for about 10 minutes using every type of gesture on the screen trying to figure out how to do it. Seems like iOS 5 is pretty much solving every issue under the sun

Yes I am, A HP Officejet 6500. No setup needed, It just needs to be on the same network.

After trolling me for a month, my wife admitted that she was going to get me an IPad for my birthday, but no best buy had one. If she had told me earlier then I could have saved her some time, but instead she kept saying that she couldn't believe I wanted such an expensive toy. Well the next day I go out to the walmart just a few miles away and they have 4 in stock. I snagged one and was home in time for G4's lead up to nintendo's press conference.

When I saw that the new console was a smaller iPad, I nearly fell out of my chair.

OK thanks. Do you need a computer to set up a HP Officejet 6500 before it can be connected to the network? Do you need the computer later to get updates? I'd like to recommend one of the wireless printers to my parents but I don't want to bugged later for tech support. Their printer works as is but printing directly from an iPad would be a great bonus.

No computer needed, I configured it right from the LCD on it. It also downloads updates and installs them right from the printer itself. Only issue I've had is if I go 3-4 days without printing it won't wake up to print. Simply unplugging the power fixes it quickly, Seems to be a known issue.

Sounds good. I'll definitely recommend it when iOS5 is available. I hope Apple includes wireless printers in their usual summer back-to-school promotion so they can be got for cheap.

Edit: what about scanning? Have you tried the HP iPrint app?

Ok for GoodReader, can I zoom in on a PDF, free write notes with a stylus or a finger, then zoom out and go to the next page and do several pages in a row, then save this annotated version of the PDF as a new file containing all the pages?

Yes. It gives you the option to save over the same file or as a new annotated file when you make your first annotation.

Should I buy it now at $4.99 or is it something that goes on sale?

Is it fast and can it handle large multipage PDFs reasonably quickly?

Works great, I was able to scan over wifi. Print or Save to image or PDF.

I'm not sure why I'm mentioning this in the iPad 2 thread but I just noticed Reeder is the top paid app in the Mac App Store.

I wish I knew why I'm stuck on the $10 price tag. I'm not particularly cheap and I love Reeder on iOS.

Why doesn't the HP app support any of their laser printers?

This app has been in the top 20 paid app section for a while. I don't think there's any incentive for them to discount. In fact, appshopper history shows that the price has only increased since December.

Goodreader works well with large PDFs for me.

I love this app and highly recommend it.

I guess I might as well get it for $4.99 since I doubt it will drop much in price over time. It's certainly worth $4.99 and I don't want to risk the price getting any higher.

What are the best iPad 2 games? Something that looks good and has a lot of polish and replayability. I already have Infinity Blade but there doesn't seem to be much else of note. I hope that more games get developed for iPad.

The "Apps of the Week" videos on tested.com is a really good way to get nice reviews of games and apps.

I thought about it then realized I'd probably continue doing most of my RSS reading on the iPad. Granted Reeder would help on the Mac, but ultimately I'd still prefer reading on the iPad for the form factor (vs my desktop at least).

It handles large PDFs fine, although I'm pretty annoyed with it's engine sometimes. Basically it only puts a page in memory at a time (which is why it can handle large ones fine) so you can't flick scroll through a bunch of pages at once. It has a scroll bar but still it feels a bit ghetto compared to the normal flick and scroll.

On the plus side if you're just reading and will only flick a page at a time it's fine. It's just when you want to skip through a bunch that it gets annoying. And it has a shitload of other functions (like connecting to pretty much anything and uploading/downloading) so that makes up for it a bit. It has the jack of all trade things going on in a sense.

At least mention other games/genres that you like (any platform) so people have a sense of what to recommend. I like the Cave shooters (Dodonpachi:R and Espgaluda II) but they're iPhone games, and have limited replayability unless you're a high score fiend. There's a lot of good stuff but without having a sense what you'd like (beyond just looking good and having "replayability") it's hard to recommend specific stuff.

Welp, got iOS 5 on my iPad 2.

Was this always there?
In portrait mode mail, you can just swipe from left of the screen to bring out the email list instead of hitting the button in the upper left.
Very odd if I never noticed that after a year.

Oh nice, I had missed that.
Just tried it now and it works fine. At the moment, it's very basic.

How do you like iOS 5 on the iPad?

I am on the fence if I should install it.

does anyone know if iOS pages will import documents from iwork '06? i can only find references to it working with '09 stuff.

this question goes for goodreader too, actually.

I only put it on last night and it took some time to finally restore from my backup properly as iTunes froze twice. Right now, it's iTunes that is annoying me with stability issues.

So far, iOS5 is fine. A few apps don't work as you know but for the most part, no problems. I'll find out more this weekend as I use it more.

Really like the multitouch gestures to navigate.
I like the tabs but they are kind of ugly. Something off about the design. It seems like they reload A LOT less frequently than before though which is nice.

http://appshopper.com/ Is your best bet. There's an iOS app too.
I'd like to thank you again for this recommendation. I installed the app on my iPad and put in that I wanted the DJ app that was $20. Yesterday it notified me that the price for it had dropped down to $10 so I picked it up. Very happy! I've also picked up a number of free apps thanks to AppShopper over the last week or so.

I live in Canada, so Netflix may as well not work at all.

How sad is the state of Netflix still in Canada? I want to subscribe but not if it doesn't have all the good shows.

Is there a way to remove apps from our Purchased list in iTunes? I don't want a bunch of demos I deleted months ago to clutter the list. I only want things that I paid for or that cost money now to show up.

It started out pretty poorly, got a lot better, then turned to total shit again.

I think this sums it up nicely.

How did it get worse? Lose content?

Yeah, some titles went poof.

An enterprising gaffer made this site. Scroll down a bit and you'll see how the updates have been a few small peaks in the middle of depressing valleys.

Titanic 2? Did they get the proper rights to title their movie that?

No rights needed. IT is not like Cameron has exclusive rights to the name. They could have probably just called it Titanic without too mych bother.

Also, the film is amazing...

Do you need to load PDFs into GoodReader through iTunes? Is there a way to get PDFs into GoodReader directly like downloading them through a browser or email?

If I don't have my main iTunes PC with me, can I use my laptop to load PDFs into GoodReader on my iPad without syncing with the laptop?

I do it with Dropbox all the time. It also supports http servers, wifi transfers, iDisk, IMAP servers, Google Docs, SugarSync, box.net, FTP servers, and WebDAV servers.

So, yeah, you're good.

If you are in Safari and you change the URL to begin with "ghttp" instead of "http," it will send the page over to GoodReader.

PS. Stop agonizing over GoodReader and just buy it, Zzoram. I promise it will do everything you want from it.

I bought it. Haven't tried it yet, will report my experience when I do.

What other productivity apps do you guys use?
