The iPad's screen is held much closer to the eyes than the typical viewing distance from a computer monitor. So while the computer monitors have lower PPI, they appear sharper to the eye.

It made sense for Apple to release a high priced iPad Pro now to fleece the early adopters and subsidize the tech for the iPad 3 coming next year. Apple is leaving money on the table with the current model. I'm honestly not sure they can release a 10" retina display for $500...

Does it really?

Apple sells iPhones and iPads more than anything else. They release before holiday time so they can catch up to demand before than and maximize sales. It took until now for iPad demand to catch up. A fall iPad 3 leaves little to no incentive for Devs. Especially since it would make a second line, meaning fragmentation and confusion. Without dev support that resolution wont look nice, as it will be 1024 x 768 upscaled.

The rumors are for the fall sept/oct. Right near holiday time. meaning a slowdown in iPad 2 manufacturing to support iPad Pro right during a crazy rush of sales. Limiting their sales of the iPad 2. It also means they will only have a short amount of time to get iPad pros out, which wont be close to enough time to make many, let alone enough to dent the production costs of those screens 4-6 months later. Making the next iPad generation even more confusing.

Subsidize the tech? What the heck does that mean? For iPad 3? So release a pro for 4-6 months before an iPad 3 to make screen tech cheaper which is wont, slow down sales of iPad 2 which it will and make the pro moniker obsolete come the new generation as it would support a new resolution and processor, so screwing over both iPad 2 owners and iPad Pro owners.

Why not do the smart and obvious thing and make more money, use the fall/winter to build up and begin testing facilities for this new product and make massive large orders to drive prices down. During that time sell the hell out of iPad 2s and just continue to pump them out at higher margins as time goes on and the production costs drop due to scale and time.

I really just think an iPad pro with current tech, timing, devs and the ecosystem this fall is a assbackwards idea for apple and wont happen. It doesn't seem to make any sense. Then again, I'd love to eat my hat while playing Real Racing 2HD on an iPad Pro.

I've read wise man's fear and right now Dance with Dragons on kindle app.
Hardly got tired holding it.
But did slip on my hands one time and smack me on the face. LOL

Also i play ambient sound sometimes for atmosphere

This happened to me a few times. I lay down in bed every morning for about 15-20 min before I get up and read PULSE. Been a little too tired and hit myself before, kinda hurts if you get the edge in your face.

Speaking of reading I downloaded Flipboard about a week ago and I'm absolutely in love, this is one of my favorite apps. I have no idea what it was like before the most recent update but as of right now it is one of the best aggregators I have ever seen.
Flipboard is amazing. It can't replace Reeder as my Google Reader (lack of readability support), but it's really awesome for news. Sometimes, when I see longer articles in my Google Reader feed, I switch to Flipboard to read it there, because it's such a pleasure. I wish they had more articles in that magazine style (sometimes some articles from the same source get displayed as normal articles).

Exactly. I've read many books on the iPad as is. Retina will be even better!

Same, I love the white-text-on-black option in the Kindle app for late-night low-light reading, I find it really easy on the eyes.

I love the Kindle-sync too, I'm constantly flipping between reading on my iPhone and iPad so it's nice to be at the same point all the time.

So in 2 weeks I'll be in Seattle (I'm from Europe). The ipad is -at the current rate - 350 euro excluding texas (6%) where it is 500 euro where I am from.

It seems like a very nice deal but it's still a big amount of money. I'm sure I'll love it for browsing GAF, Youtube and Facebook on the comfy couch.

So GAF, should I buy it? Convince me!

Sorry if this has been answered--works been hectic and time is at a premium. And my name is red.

I just nabbed a 3G iPad 2. It's wonderful and it murders my original. The only problem is that Bluetooth seems to fade out or be unstable in general when 3G is simultaneousy turned on. It always does it, and Bluetooth works fine when 3G is off. Sometimes it audibly fades out, sometimes it just hard stops. In both cases it does not turn back on.

Is there a way to get around YouTube videos not working? I click onnthem from google and many times they aren't supported, and they don't show up at all when searching in the YouTube app

Dang, does iPad 2 have that option in iBooks?

Alright guys, I'm looking for something very specific, and I haven't really been able to find it anywhere locally.

I'm planning on getting the official apple smart cover (mainly to use as a stand) and I'd really like to get a shell/case for the back of the iPad 2. Scratches aren't a huge deal to me, but I really want something that'll help improve the grip of the thing.

I've shopped around and most covers seem to be a hard plastic with some kind of substance on it that makes it seem rubbery, but doesn't really do the trick. So I think I'm looking for a gel backing (preferably clear or black) that's compatible with the smart cover.

Any suggestions?

Had a glass crack yesterday. Front right of iPad 2, spider-like crack. Happened somewhere between leaving my house in the morning and getting to my office, no idea how. It was resting on my front passenger seat while I drove and I didn't hit any major bumps and it had the smart cover on it.

Apple is replacing it (no Applecare, but under warranty obviously) and we had a spare at the office so I didn't need to go without.

Keep your shit safe, folks.

Just because it's fun:
LG Display CEO: Retina Display coming to iPad, non-Apple smartphones

The case has been building for a third-generation iPad with Retina Display in recent weeks. The latest clue arrives in a Korean Times report about LG Display CEO’s meeting with reporters late yesterday. Asked whether his company would enter the OLED market for smaller portable devices, CEO Kwon Young-soo responded by accusing Samsung of misleading the market because OLED displays “are not suitable in terms of picture quality, response time, energy consumption and contrast ratios for smartphones and tablets”. He said LG Display would make OLED displays for big screen TVs and then dropped this bombshell:

He said more smartphone manufacturers will release new models employing LG’s “Retina Display’’ that has been used in iPhones and iPads.

I'm thinking about getting an iPad 2 for my mom. She's mostly gonna check emails, surf the web, and go on facebook. I'll probably borrow it for some gaming. Is it safe to assume an iPad 2 hd or iPad 3 will be released around September or is it most likely gonna have a 2012 release date? If its September I might as well wait for the new update right?

Wow that's scary. Did you bump it on anything in the past? Maybe a microfracture occured previously and a bumpy ride caused it to open up.

Apple products hold value very well. You can buy one now and recoup most of it when its time to upgrade.

There is no way a new iPad is coming in 2011.

Selling via Craigslist/etc.? How much did the iPad 1 sell for when the iPad 2 came out? $200 less?

The Smart Cover improves the grip when it's on. When you fold it back, fold it in half with the surface outside and it'll make a good grip like that too.

I don't see the need for a back shell.

It was hurt by the fact Apple dropped the price of the iPad 1 by $100 when the 2 was coming out. They never do that kind of thing, so that hurt it hard.

Oh well - will sell my 64 GB wifi iPad 2 for a Retina Display iPad 3 no prob.

Yes but how much were the iPad 1's selling for? $300 for the formerly $500 but then reduced to $400 model? Or less?

I wasn't a huge fan of the way the grip felt with it flipped around the back.

it was a buyer's market as lots of rich folk were dumping their ipads. I saw 64GBs sold for $350 that just a week before were going for $630.

I messed around with the iPad before but a few days ago a friend let me test out his extensively and I was most impressed by what a great comic reader it is... Is it wrong if I just want to impulse buy this thing for that sole reason?

I got mine just to read comics at first as well lol

What are some good cases for the iPad 2? I'd like something simple that covers the front and back. If the case offered a few viewing angles that would be nice too. I've checked Amazon, Best Buy, and Target and haven't had any luck.

Take a look at the stm Skinny. Only 2 viewing angles though, but it protects the ipad without adding much bulk.

I use the SENA Ultraslim leather sleeve + black leather smart cover. Not the cheapest option, but it allows me to keep the iPad naked while I'm using it and well protected when I'm not. The leather of the SENA sleeve looks and feels fantastic. Also makes a nice pad to set the iPad on so that the edge doesn't scratch.

If it's not available at the Apple store, and they are often sold out, try the Mac Store (independent Mac retailer) on 45th in the university district. They almost always have them in stock and it's a cool store. And since you will be walking distance from Samurai Noodle on University Avenue, go there and have the best ramen in Seattle.

Man, I cannot believe that I can't find a rubber/gel case that's compatible with the Smart Cover in this entire city. Everything is polycarbonate, which doesn't really provide much grip at all. Grr.
