BuzzPlayer HD.

Plays and STREAMS all video formats with no need for conversion. That's right--it will stream all formats from a NAS without needing a computer to run a converter or processing program. I don't think any other app offers this.

Now that I'm getting set up, what are some must have apps?

For my foreflight already for class, and kindle for my books.

I've never had an iphone.

Things I would like:

best video player (I.E. plays most formats. divx, .mkv, h264, etc.)
Best word processor (take notes in class)
Best tower defense game (loved Robot Defense on droid)

Other things you think I should have.

Only good things to say about AVPlayerHD, Just a few issues with subs.

Pretty impressive feature list, I'll try it soon.

I use Air Video for streaming but it does live convert

Didn't think I would be checking out this thread, but I just won a 16 GB 3G from work, arrives next week.
Damn, 138 pages. I've never even used itunes before.
Should be fun. Subbed.

I'm in the planning stages of a Game-Crit project for iPad and Kindle, but had neither, so I picked up an iPad 2 on Friday.

I'm really impressed.

I've download a bunch of useful apps, mostly for free, and I've been having a great time. Of course, my productivity has completely halted as I've been consuming stuff all weekend. I think it's going to really affect the way that I receive news with apps like Flipboard and Reeder.

I subscribed to Edge and Harper's through the Zinio app, and it doesn't compare to the feeling of holding a magazine in my hands, it's much better than looking at magazines on the computer.

Any app recommendations would be welcome. I'm not feeling the games all that much, save for Drop7, which I already owned on iPhone.

The only app I've purchased and have been somewhat disappointed in is Instapaper. I use Reeder (both on my Mac and iPad) to manage my RSS feeds and wanted to add my Instapaper library's RSS feed to Reeder. The problem is: Instapaper's RSS feed is borked, showing only 10 of the forty-plus items I saved this morning. Read It Later has no such problems, so I'm sticking with that for now.

Anyway, it's a great device. I'm very happy with my purchase, thus far.

So I was thumbing through the newyorker and saw an ad for their "the digital revolution" suite of articles. It sound really really interesting, but its iPad only. :| Anyone read it yet? How is it?

I understand it still works if you jailbreak? I should try that some time... I'm a little scared of bricking it though.
I guess you can, but AVPlayerHD is better if anything, and more up to date

So what about for school? Good word processors to making and organizing notes?

For hand-written/doodled notes, Noteshelf is pretty good, but it doesn't have any text input feature.

For text-input, I dunno, haven't found anything amazing, I guess Apple's Pages is not bad for typing up notes

Adobe just released "CreatePDF" for iPad today, they claim you can create PDFs from scratch just like in Acrobat.

Edit: what would people say to us doing an Ultimate iPad app thread with neoGAFs recommended apps, links to iTunes and icons etc.?

I don't need streaming apps, as I already use EyeTV and Plex. =)
Not really. "Must haves" vary wildly by every user.

And if anyone remembers this post:

Is there a good graphing calculator app for iPad? Something that has similar functionality to the TI-8x (83,84) series of calculators? Or is that expecting too much?

Any recommendations for a dock (that connects to PC).

I got the apple one for the first iPad (as the iPad 2 dock, for some baffling reason, can't be used with the smart cover on). But it has a very small footprint and seem like it's going to tip over. Any recommendations for something with a bigger footprint?

I have also asked the same question (without any answers), but I've looked into three particular apps:

SpaceTime for iPad
iCAS
PocketCAS Pro for iPad

No idea which one's the best, or if there are any other better apps for this, but these three look pretty solid, especially SpaceTime. If you simply want the graphing function (without any other fancy math bullshit), then check out Graphing Calculator HD which is much, much cheaper than the above apps.

jailbreak if you can and get XBMC its the only hardware video player. I play 1080p 4000kbps mkv files no lag or frame drops. supports a ton of other features also.

baboo is a good note taker also

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into them. PocketCAS Pro has a lite/free version, I'll give that a shot.

Seems pointless as you will need a real calculator for any exam purposes

SO had my Ipad a week....only games I have been crazy about are Plants vs Zombies and Dungeon Hunter 2.

Angry birds is way overrated imo. Infinity Blade is just meh....got bored after the first 2 generations. I also got a FF XIII looking game that was kind of boring and didn't draw me in. Though these games I have only played maybe an hour each.

To some extent, they do. And they're right in that the criminal element is more pronounced in the US. But there are boorish, ignorant assholes everywhere.

But I'm more impressed that guy was able to hold his balance long enough to punch the guy. Korean buses are like rollercoasters.

I loved AirVideo, but it just won't work right with my new gateway. Very frustrating, it worked so well on my old router's network but it just hates the SMC.

I'm looking for a good alternative, has anyone tried either (or both) VLC Streamer or StreamToMe? I'd prefer the one that works best when the host PC is in use by another user, I don't transcode a lot as I tend to batch convert files but leave them on my computer but on occasion I'll transcode.

I see there's a free version of VLC so hell I'll just try that when I get home. Any opinions on StreamToMe?

I'm not convinced a different app will solve this problem. I think router settings need to be explored

Fucking GOOGLE is not working on me iPad. If I hit the search field to write something, the keyboard shows up but just as quickly, it disappears.

I have to do my google searches through the browser, but once a search return results, I can input whatever I want directly on google. I just can't seem to do it on the vanilla Google page.

What a fucking weird thing to happen, it's been like that for a few days now. Any thoughts?

Question:

I just got an iPad. Is there a way that I can get it, and the email accounts on my Macbook Pro and my iPhone, to all interact with each other a little bit better? By that I mean, if I read an email in Mail on my Mac, can I get make it so it doesn't show up as "unread" on my other two devices?

I'm currently rolling with 5 email addresses, all through Google, one is a gmail address, others are attached to websites I either own or am connected to.

Currently, they're all set up as POP accounts. Would switching to Imap get me where I want to be?

I think I initially had one of the accounts set up as iMap when added it to the Macbook Pro in March, but I was having some issues with it, though I cannot remember what they were.

BuzzPlayer HD.

Better than all of those, it's the only app that streams any format from a network share without needing to convert or use a computer as a crutch.

The usual, restart app, restart iPad, reset iPad, restore iPad

Try it in order, it escalates.

Using imap instead of PoP solves that issue

switch to IMAP since that's the only protocol outside of Exchange that supports what you're looking for. POP doesn't support what you're looking for.

Yeah the main issue will be your network, at least with StreamToMe (no experience with the other one). Unless you fix that you'll have to find an app with an external component (that connects through their servers) that can get around it. I know there's ones out there that can do it but I can't remember the names.

That won't fix his problem.

How do you know that? Please be familiar with the differences in streaming video apps before making a blanket statement.

If his host computer's connection to the router is the problem, he can completely bypass it in several ways by using BuzzPlayer HD instead of AirVideo.

AirVideo is one of the more trouble prone video streaming apps because it requires a host computer constantly to be running a conversion process.

He alludes to this (wants an app "that works best when the host PC is in use by another user"). BuzzPlayer may fit the bill because it doesn't require a host computer at all--if his router has a usb port, he could connect an external drive, mount it with BuzzPlayer via SMB, and completely cut the computer out of the equation--which could be the issue with AirVideo.

I'm back. I got the 32GB 3G version this time around. I'm going to try all the tricks possible to make this a proper MBA substitute.

Good call, I tried the free VLC streamer and it eventually crapped out too. I was hoping that one of the other options perhaps used a different method of finding devices on the network to stream to/from as I suspected that it was Bonjour that was being blocked or borked in some way by the gateway and VLC streamer behaved almost exactly like AirVideo did, so meh. I guess I'll have to get my ISP to disable the gateway on the SMC modem and go back to a seperate router, which is kinda annoying because it works just fine as a router for everything else and the wifi signal is actually stronger than my old Dlink N.

Just bought TuneInRadio and Downcast alongside a few other apps. Now I just need to find some amazing radio stations and podcasts - trying to get into this. Consemplating buying ComicZeal as well. =)

Cause he said Air Video was fine before his changed his network. Chances are whatever change that's affecting Air Video will affect other devices and apps as well as far as network accessibility. And I am familiar with Buzz Player, would it have been ok if I had put a "probably" in there so it wouldn't be a blanket statement?

Are you trying to play remotely or only on the LAN? You say "eventually crapped out", do you mean it worked shortly then just choked? Cause that'd indicate you are able to connect, so it doesn't seem like Bonjour is an issue (it's basically just used for auto discovery to connect in the first place).

Woohoo! My Jot Pro has arrived.

I don't know when it's going to officially go on sale, but when it does I highly recommend it. It's MUCH nicer to use than a rubber-tipped stylus. And the Pro version clips to the iPad 2 via magnets, which is nifty.

I LOVE the Adam Carolla podcasts, he has 3 of them and I could listen to them all day. Interviews interesting people, speaks a lot of sense.

CarTalk is great too

Wait, what? I can use a mouse with an iPad? How? Just grabbed a bluetooth wireless mac mouse - iPad isn't finding it.

The iPad is the most useful device on a college campus. Mine is coming in handy SO MUCH.

So school starts tomorrow and I have two questions.

1) What are the must have apps for a campus for taking notes and stuff. I have iAnnotate and Pages so far.

2) What would be the best way of "digitizing" my books. Just scan it page by page into pdfs and merge them? What program would I use to merge the pdfs?
