if that's anything like a dagi; you need to hold it funny to write. I hated mine.

How is video editing on the ipad? Can you upload media from other devices like say, a flip camera and do editing of that on the ipad?
not with iMovie that's for sure. iMovie only accepts video files from its camera app or from an iPhone 'uploaded' via the dock connector.

The tip is on a swivel around the ball point, tilts around fine. And the newer Dagis have some funky spring mechanism to tilt which gets around their old static design.

Does the Flip work with the camera connection kit?

Consemplating buying ComicZeal as well. =)

Many GAF comic fans prefer ComicGlass, but I notice that in this video the app has to pause to load pages as they turn. ComicZeal lets you run comic files through ComicZeal Sync, which compresses the images and shrinks them to the correct resolution for the iPad. This eliminates loading on page turn. If you want to skip the process and load comics directly into the app via iTunes, you can do that too; though I've never desired to.

Here's a review which seems to confirm what I'm seeing in the YT video: ComicGlass can be choppy and pages can take time to load. The reviewer prefers CZ to CG and he doesn't even use CZ Sync; though he notes that CG is a very solid app.

ComicGlass fans - am I missing something? CZ isn't perfect, and I'd be interested in switching if I find that there's a better alternative out there. But so far, CZ Sync plus the magic wand backgrounds (and the fact that my collection is already converted and loaded into CZ) is trumping any desire I might have to switch to an app with better library management, which is CZ's one major flaw. I also love CZ's swipe-from-edge page turn gesture. Not sure if ComicGlass has anything similar, but swiping feels too good for me to go back to tapping to turn pages.

Comic zeal sync hasn't been required in a long time. You just load the issues, and comic zeal does the work in app the first time. After that, butter smooth.

that initial conversion that comiczeal does upon first loading files is not required for comicflow, comicglass and bookman/ bookman pro.

basically, comiczeal is the odd man out, requiring this extra processing time. it's not the end of the world but it's not necessary either and, for 8 bucks in iOS land, we should expect something more seamless.

Ok, but CZ is seamless and smooth after that conversion, and according to the review just posted, Comic Glass is not. Is that accurate? If so, I'd rather have the conversion up front.

I know that comicflow and bookman are super smooth with no conversion. if comicglass is not, then it's an issue with comicglass and not a requirement for conversion.

I would recommend the person using comicglass to try those other two apps first.

I know CZ Sync isn't required, but it makes the initial reading of a comic butter smooth. I know that CZ converts books as you read them to ensure lack of loading on subsequent readings, but CZ Sync guarantees a lack of hiccups straight away.

According to the review, CZ is pretty smooth with no conversion too. I think there are two choke points when it comes to load times: the app, and the iPad itself. Assuming the apps are all equally fast, very large images will still always cause the iPad to pause in order to load them. As Tobor says, if that happens in CZ, it will only ever happen once, because the image is processed as it loads. But on top of that, if you pre-convert every image before loading it into the app via CZ Sync, you'll never see a loading screen. Ever. So as good as the other apps are at processing images, if I was to load an extremely large, high quality file into any of them, the iPad will still cause them to stall for a few seconds. CZ Sync is my guarantee that this will never happen, and every issue will be a seamless experience.

but if you don't use CZ with the sync app then, as soon as you load up new files into the ipad directly, CZ will process each one before you can interact with the app. I don't know if it's shrinking them or just working on something else... but it's doing something and the time i takes is not rivial if you're putting more than a couple files on there at once.

so there's no getting around this extra waiting time with CZ.

with the other apps, you just load up and go. I never used Comicglass for more than one "test" comic but the other two apps had zero problems with large files and I encountered no loading between pages.

basically, I find the only reason to keep recommending comic zeal is for the organization abilities with the pop over menus. or for the "magic background" color option if that's your thing.

but you can get sub folder organization in some of the other apps, as well, and you don't need to deal with a) the CZ conversion process, either on the PC or on the ipad and b) the insane itunes backup times caused by CZ's monolithic comic database that it builds when it processes new files.

CZ is no longer the easiest or most elegant way to read comics on the iPad. The developer really needs to update the app to bring it up to par with the competition in regards to those two issues.

And while we can tolerate these issues, I see no reason to assume they are required or that CZ has the best UX out there

CZ still does this even if you import files processed by CZ Sync. I'd love to know what it's doing too. I won't disagree that the extra wait time is undesirable, but I'd always choose to add time to the import/sync stage rather than deal with time between page turns.

The backup issue has been resolved for a long time. I've had my iPad (1) since December, I now have 35GB of comics in my CZ library, and I've never had any issues with long backups. It was either solved in an old CZ update, or with iOS 4.2.

CZ 5 is currently in beta testing, and will be a major update bringing a plethora of new features. I guess CZ 4 is a YMMV thing. It might not be easiest way to read comics, but judging by reviews of the alternatives it seems like it may be the most reliable. It's never crashed on me or fed me a loading screen, and my only complaints are with library organisation. I'd love more folders and subfolders, and a large bookshelf-style browsing interface in addition to the overlay library. I'm not saying CZ is objectively the best comic book reader on the iPad, but I do think it still as viable an option as the other popular readers, depending on what a user wants from the app.

What new features will Comic Zeal 5 have?

The beta only went out a few days ago, but according to the Bitolithic Twitter feed it'll combine many of the elements and features of the developer's other app, ThinkBook. I don't use ThinkBook, so I have no idea what this could mean. Presumably it'll contribute to sorting and organising my library at the very least, so I'm looking forward to it.

Are you trying to play remotely or only on the LAN? You say "eventually crapped out", do you mean it worked shortly then just choked? Cause that'd indicate you are able to connect, so it doesn't seem like Bonjour is an issue (it's basically just used for auto discovery to connect in the first place).
Strictly on my LAN. It will find the server at first and sometimes even start playing for a while, but then eventually the stream will stop. Once that happens neither Air Video nor VLC will be able to find my PC again. Sometimes restarting the PC side program will let the client on the iPad see the PC again, sometimes not. Regardless once it stops working the first time it's rare that it will play again without restarting the server or even rebooting the PC, and if it does it usually stops playing after few seconds.

I suspect Bonjour mainly because of the troubleshooting steps at Air Video's site, following all their instructions if it still does not work in the way it does not work for my they suggest an issue with Bonjour. Even when setting Air Video up for remote access with a PIN it still is not always able to connect to the server, and will sometimes connect, disconnect, fail even a simple ping test to the server, then start working again normally for a few minutes with nothing changed. Kind of annoying because as I mentioned this is literally the only thing the gateway does not seem to do properly, but googling my modem find a lot of ppl who say it's a great modem but a horrible router and suggest using a separate router.

Major issues with ComicZeal that other apps don't have:

-Needs to convert (as discussed above). I've never had a problem with ComicGlass loading comics extremely fast, no conversion required. No time between page turns on iPad 2.

-Still doesn't do auto-landscape mode upon rotation. Can't even view two pages as landscaped!

-Doesn't have many viewing filter options. Can't modify contrast at all.

-Always shows arrows upon page turn, distracting.

-Can't customize tap zones (not to extent of ComicGlass, anyway)

-No customizable gesture support.

-No DropBox support.

-No "Open In" function to hand off a comic from Zeal to another app.

-No bookshelf view.

-Has bugs due to not being updated in 13 MONTHS. You may not encounter them, but check the ComicZeal support forums to get an idea.

-Too expensive. $8 for an app with all these issues and very infrequent updates.

I'm going to be getting an IPad 2 this week, and, while I'm going to get the smart cover and the Khomo back case, what should I get when I put it in my bag? I would hate for a random cord or something to slide underneath the smart cover and scratch the screen.

Nothing will get between the smart cover and screen, you'll see. That said, It might be a good idea to get a sleeve just for shock protection in case you drop the bag.

Sounds good. What does GAF recommend for sleeves?

I've been using Comicglass extensively on my iPad2 and I haven't run into any page loading issues that people are speaking of. I've had CZ do the page loading pause on my iPad2 when I made a really big PowerGirl file combining the entire series into one long comic.

That's me though, I would recommend Comicglass over Zeal at this point, in it's current form Zeal really has little over Glass. I've currently got 17GB of comics using Glass that I previously had with Zeal, Zeal takes too much time to do....well everything.

I also like Glass's organization over Zeal (I know wtf right?)

Bookshelf view also helps the matters.

Thanks to this thread, I'm now looking into getting a jot stylus. What's the best note taking app out there right now for southpaw? And how good is it at being a replacement for paper?

Yeah, waiting sucks. I'll take the 32 GB version when it comes out. I'm still using the first iPad and it kinda sucks.

Yeah, it's gonna be hard. I could afford one right now but dat high res screen.

I was hoping to pass the time with the £80 hp touchpad but that was a big waste of time.

I don't know when it's going to officially go on sale, but when it does I highly recommend it. It's MUCH nicer to use than a rubber-tipped stylus. And the Pro version clips to the iPad 2 via magnets, which is nifty.
First, what app is that? Second, does the jot magnetically stick still if the smart cover is closed? I haven't gotten mine yet and have been curious.

How is it for people going from Iphone 4/Ipod Touch 4th Gen to Ipad / 2? Obviously the pixel density is not as high on iPad, is that anything that bothers you?

As said above, it's Adobe Ideas. Which is alright, but I'm waiting for Adonit's new app that overrides the finger offset and is designed just for the Jot.

Yes, it does stick to the smart cover. Hell, it even sticks nicely when my iPad has the sleeve on.

Speaking of...

SENA Ultraslim. I can't recommend it enough. They have a version designed to fit the iPad 2 + smart cover perfectly. It's not cheap, but it's really classy looking and feels nice.

I have one for my iPad 2 and iPhone 4.

Protip: Google search for SENA case promo/coupon codes and apply it at checkout. Saved me 20%! Edit2: 20%... not $20 lol. I wish

Yes. You'll get used to it but I still prefer to read any text on the retina display while leaving images and video for the iPad.

Hi guys, I need your help on a little conundrum I have at the moment, please could you guys try help out, here is the story.

We have a Makro(big wholesaler like Target) dedicated Garage forecourt team who go out and place orders at Garages around the region.
We have invested in 2 Ipad’s (Ipad 2 3G) and hope to find software that we can use to transmit the orders placed at the garages back to head office.

We are looking for some sort of database with front end that can synchronise every now and then and send captured orders to a central database.
I have heard that Apple has got MS Access as a package and believe this will work for us but need clarity on weather this is the best way to go or are there better suggestions out there?

If you guys have any info that can help me I will tell tales of your compassion.

There are two entirely different sets of rumours; one of which talks about an iPad "HD", which would be a premium model that is sold alongside the current iPad but with a higher resolution and for professional designers. The second set refers to an iPad 3.

The consensus amongst the rumours seems to have been that there was originally a product launch intended for this fall, but that it does not seem likely now; most people would now say next spring.

No one has confirmed or denied any of these rumours.

1. Unless Apple has closed up leaks in its supply chain, there are few indications that there will be a new iPad is coming in time for the holidays. There is recent speculation about a new thinner battery, but that's it.

Because Apple needs to produce double the number of devices each year (from ~50 million last year to ~100 million iPhones this year for instance), they need to employ more companies, factories, and suppliers, which is why there seem to be more and more case and supply leaks each year.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good (cheap, if not free) apps that keep track of your finances? I'd like something for my iPhone/iPad where I can jot down if I owe someone money or vice versa, etc.

Mint, but it's currently iPhone/iPod only. If your personal bank has an app, some of them do that type of stuff too.

App related question (is this the right thread?)

Anway, for anyone that has the iPad 2. I have the DirecTV Sunday Ticket app for the iPad and I am wondering if I can just output the games to my HDTV through the digital AV adapter (that I already own) with the iPad 2?

I only have 1 DirecTV receiver (it's in my living room) and I want to get the Sunday Ticket in my basement as well.

I was going to buy it from the PS3 store, but it looks like it's $50 there. If I can use the video-out on the iPad 2 to play it on my TV I might do that instead.
