How come I can't play YouTube songs in the background anymore?
Edit: don't know how I fixed it, but I have...
Wait.. I can go into the YouTube app, start up a music video, go into another app, while listening to the song from the background?

32 GB

I had 32 GB for the first and it was good.

I got 16GB for the second and I’m cramped for space with all these magazines and apps.
I hope they'll adjust the pricing next year.

iPad 2 16 GB, $399
iPad 3 32 GB $499

going up to 128 GB.

I think that would be pretty great.

It's funny out it ends up working out. I had a 32GB iPod touch 4 and thought..that's plenty for me. Turns out I ran out of space. So I went with a 64GB iPad 2....I have 14GB left. Crazy how much content you end up putting on these devices. If you can go big, do it.

And honestly, sometimes it just depends on your stage in life. I know I'll have a lot of pictures and video because of our 3yr old daughter so capacity is important to me.

If you plan on putting music on it, get the 32gb. If not, I'd probably go for the 16gb. I have plenty of apps and games on mine (plus some TV episodes) and I usually hover around 25-50% free space.

I really like the look of that new dark gray smart cover and my over-priced navy leather cover is shitty and coming apart at the corners

So I am taking edge magazine for a spin, and so far it's just a bunch of images. :/ future publishing please make it more like Economist digital.

Everyone should get a PadPivot. It's kinda amazing

I don't really see the advantage of this over say, a Toblino case. And the case has the added benefit of always being there when you need it since you don't detach it from the iPad. The padpivot is something else you have to carry, store, and remember to bring with you.

It's great for me because it:
  • Perches perfectly on my lap unlike those folio cases and smart covers
  • Enables easy rotation between landscape and portrait unlike those folio cases and smart covers
  • Works with the iPad 1, iPad 2, will almost certainly work with the iPad 3, and works right now with all the other phones, ereaders and tablets that I own
  • works with a case and works work without a case so you don't have to hate on it if you already own a folio case or smart cover (I own neither and use my device naked)
I got in earlier this year via kickstarter but it's now available at BestBuy so I'm happy to recommend it.

Oh, and I rarely forget to pack it because it folds up quickly, fits in my pocket (definitely fits in my bag), and I use it all the time during my commute so I'd probably head back home to pick it up. It's that good.

Anyone familiar with the Apple store , knows how they have IPADs at EVERY product in their store to find out more about said product. Does anyone know how I could create something like that for my company?? I want a client to be able to touch a product and then the products info will pop up. Does anyone know what I can do to get that same time of interaction?

Make an application.

Had a 32GB 3G iPad 1.

Went with a 16GB Wi-Fi iPad 2, and *REALLY* regret it.

I will *never* buy another iPad that isn't 32GB/3G

I seriously have no idea what answer you want from people here.

i was actually wondering if there was any app that would help with that, maybe a youtube video or walkthrough, you know something way more than the usual smart ass response you throw out cool guy. but like I said thanks a ton for being the dickhead that your mother raised you to be. I will check that link

Well there are thousands of books and videos that will help you learn Objective C, then.

You're so sensitive. It's an application. There's really nothing anyone can do beyond telling you that.

Not sure who's the dickhead right now.

Thanks for everyone's voice on the sizing. I decided to go with the 32 gig. Bought it off Amazon and should be arriving in the next couple of days.

- Learn to program - this will be much more complex than just watching a video.

- Find a framework that does most of the hard stuff...but there will probably still be programming involved.

- Pay someone to program.

- Make a webpage...but this may involve programming.

- Pay someone to make a webpage.

- Find an app that can make interactive presentations on the iPad, I think stuff like this is available although I don't know what to look for. Maybe look up something like mockups, presentation, interactive, portfolios. Whatever the case this is probably your best bet cause it doesn't sound like you're open to programming (and if you are, I'm not sure you understand the complexity involved with it).

- Pay someone to find said type of app and make something in it for you.

anyone else got the zelda ed? I see that its been up on newstand for a couple of days now and I'm actually quite annoyed. anyone know what is going to happen to digital subscriptions via Zinio now that apple is going down the newstand route?

I appreciate this .. thanks a lot ... I was able to find some tutorials and think I figured out the best way to do this will be through Adobe indesign and making pages that are linkable through minor coding and an add-on. I started messing around with it this morning. I also found an app that has a bare bone way of clicking throughout a presentation since Keynote doesn't allow hyperlinking throughout a presentation to certain slides.

Again thanks for your help J.

i've joined the ipad 2 club, courtesy of a "please don't leave us!" campaign by softbank for current iphone 4 owners where i get a 64GB 3G ipad 2 for about $20 a month over two years - plus 100mb free data, which automatically goes up to unlimited for $50 or so if i hit the limit, which i won't because i use a mobile wi-fi hotspot. it basically works out as me paying something like half price for the ipad very very slowly, which i like.

this is the main reason i bothered to get the ipad 2 at all - i find 16gb impossibly small, and that's solely because of app size. games like dead space and infinity blade tend to be around the gigabyte mark, multimedia stuff like the elements can often push 2 gigs, and magazine downloads (wired, the new yorker, national geographic etc) are usually several hundred megabytes each. i want to not worry about app size, while also leaving room for photos and a bit of music, neither of which i ever have any room for with my ipad 1.

Just got the new dark gray smart cover. Niiiiiice. I like the material. Inside color matches the outside. Fits great and serves the exact purpose I need it for. I have no idea if there are any additional changes from the 1st run of smart covers besides the color differences.

Why is it that sometimes when I go for a charge it doesn't? I put it in a wall charger just now and the USB symbol came up instead of the battery. I thought it was charging so I was watching a show on it and 10 mins later it's down a percent. Then I take the charger out and replug it and now it has the lightning symbol, and charging fine...

Anyone know what's up ?

Wait. New Smart Covers? Oh no... they got rid of orange? Man. If I were even remotely interested in the Smart Cover, which I was kind of, that's the one color I wanted.

Eh. Whatever.

Oh no, they lost a non-sale.

Have there been any rumours at all about an iPad 3? Specifically release date.. by March maybe?
September, October, November, 1st or 2nd quarter next year, perhaps summer. It'll come out when it comes out. If they're gunning for high res screens and/or newer generation ARM/PowerVR cores I'd suspect later rather than sooner, but you never know.

You're missing my point, I'm not dismissing the difference I just don't think the problem is anywhere near as bad as you're making it out to be, and imo it isn't worth taking a hit in graphics performance if they don't have a capable enough GPU.
Apple are already a whole generation ahead of everyone else on the graphics front, no one else is even close over 6 months after launch.

You don't have to worry about Apple providing sufficient GPU performance. It's not a difficult problem to solve either, with the shrink to 32nm they can easily add a couple of SGX cores yet push the overall die size significantly down. Then all they need to do is run those cores somewhere past the 50% capacity they're currently at (fyi they run at ~200mhz yet the architecture is capable of clocking all the way to 400mhz at 45 nm, so hitting 300mhz or higher at 32nm will be a doddle) and you're back in the same performance ballpark.

No, your not going to see games run faster when running at 4x resolution but they won't necessarily be slower either.

Game developers can and will get smart as well. There should be nothing stopping them from running all 2d elements at retina resolution yet rendering the actual 3D at 1024x768 with 4xmsaa and judging by the sub HD debacle on consoles I doubt that would go done poorly, it would still deliver fantastic image quality. Not all buffers need to increase 4x in resolution either, which will lessen the burden.

Rogue and A15 will come next generation. The retina display will be the big USP this year.

i'm a little confused; does the ipad 2 have any different home button behaviour that i should know about? there's no problem with the button itself, as i can bring up the multitasking bar 10 times out of 10 and it always works by itself, but a single press doesn't bring me back to the first page of apps from another anymore, and nor does it stop the apps wiggling after i hold down on the screen to delete or move one. am i going mad?

So glad the Camera Connection Kit is usable again in IOS5. Wouldn't recognize most of my mem cards on the previous firmware, even if they had the correct directory structure.

iOS 5.0.1 beta contains improvements and other bug fixes including:
- Fixes bugs affecting battery life
- Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
- Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
- Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation
- Contains security improvements

iOS 5.0.1 beta introduces a new way for developers to specify files that should remain on device, even in low storage situations.

Can any of you guys help me with this? It gets harder and harder to find anything, as I'm with an iPad 1.
I have come to use it a lot to watch movies on at night when I go to bed, as I don't have a tv in e bedroom, so I would like to clip it onto a stand, which would stand on the floor and like bend in over my bed, so I can watch movies without holding the iPad 1 or having to lean it up against a wall.

Any idea where to look? I tried Amazon already. =/

That's just a bug. It happened to me the other day on the iPad 1, exactly as you describe it. It probably went away by now, but if it didn't, just restart the iPad.

On the multitask gestures back to the iPad 1: nice, but I'm actually not missing them that much. I wasn't even looking forward to a jailbreak to bring them back.

I like them, but the thing is, the iPad 1 became a bit of a slouch. I figure it must be the RAM. So, sometimes, especially when you're doing a memory heavy task, you perform a multitouch gesture, and here's a huge obnoxious delay. It doesn't feel right and it breaks the metaphor completely. That kind of frustration doesn't happen when operating with the home button. If there's a delay, there's a delay, whatever. And as a bonus you can play your piano apps like a mad man :P

Something like this? http://www.iphone2in1tripodmount.com/ipad.html

Sounds like you need the iPad equivalent of the Joby Gorillamobile iPhone tripod.

I briefly complained about this in the Verge thread. Whoever thought releasing the OG iPad with 256 MB RAM was a good idea should be fired. Browsing the web can be a terrible experience and sometimes I really want to throw it against a wall. The 3rd gen can't come soon enough.

Exactly. Such a huge bottleneck for an otherwise great device. With 512MB of RAM it would last at least a couple more years before becoming obsolete. It's also a shame because I really dig its design, one of my favorites, and it isn't coming back.

Hanfree, MonitorsinMotion's Tablet Floor Stand or iPad-Butler's floor stand.
