I figured it was going to be 2048x1536, it just allows for better app scaling.

I do wish it was a little higher however, I'm sure 256 PPI is gonna look great; but will it really qualify as Retina? I don't know..

So iBooks 2 added several 2048px wide resources…

Awww yeah

Not sure which thread to put this in, but I'm having trouble with iTunes. I bought an album and of course, during the download, it errored out on two songs...now the songs are missing and I have no idea how to redownload them.

Just go into the "purchased" section of the store. Everything you ever purchased is available to redownload.

iBooks 1.2 had 2x resources last year around the same time, of course it's more likely this year considering all the random tablets shown at CES with 1080p screens.

"Retina" is defined by the viewing distance or something, so technically it could. Like 326 on the iPhone is "retina when viewing x inches from screen" or whatever, bump that up a bit for the iPad, now 256 is also magically "retina"!

256 looks fine, compare some Android phones (more or less in the 250 range) to a current iPad screen to get a sense of the resolution...just ignore if they look a bit bad cause they have a PenTile display. Hell just look at a 7" tablet, the decent ones are around 160dpi and that little bump is a nice improvement over the iPad.

I'm selling my iPad 2 to some random craigslister tonight. But I only have like 30 mins to format it, so that everything's wiped for him to set up. Unfortunately I don't have my laptop with me, so I can't sync it with iTunes and restore/erase from there. So is it possible to just do it from the iPad itself?

Like Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings?

That should do it right? So when he gets the iPad and connects it to his comp, he can set it up as if he bought it new?

Sorry for the noob question, I'm a bit limited on time and I just wanna be sure.

Man my iPad 2 has been having some weird ass LCD issues (launch unit). For one, I finally noticed this light bleeding issue. It's actually pretty bad with mine and along all four sides and corners. And now I can't not see it when I watch a movie that has black bars on the top and bottom.

And while I was checking that issue out by loading up an all-black image, I noticed a faint white bar along the top of the screen. After a minute I realized it was the navigation bar from my browser, burned in like a cheap 10-year-old plasma TV. After a couple minutes of keeping it on the black image, the retention faded.... But still, what the shit is that about?

And lastly the bottom edge (side with the home button) of the screen is coming out. If you look at it edge-on, starting from the left its all pretty flush. But as you move to the right, the screen edge gets thicker and thicker as it sort of rises out of the base. And I can push it back in but it slides back out after a second.

Functionally it still works, but damn... I paid $700 for this thing and I want it to go another couple years at least. Still under warranty so I made a genius appt for tomorrow.

While I'm there I'll have them look at my iPhone 4 as well (launch again). I'm still having proximity sensor issues and I found out that the bumper case scuffed the steel band to all hell.

Bad luck with iOS products this round for me. But everything's still warrantied so I should be good. Just wanted to share cause I couldn't believe how messed up my iPad's screen was.

I also have a image retention issue, and my brightness is set to like 40%. Really crazy... my shitty LCD TV from 2006 has less problem with image retention than a 2010 gadget.

Well got my iPad 2 swapped with no hassle. I know it's probably in my head but it just feels so much better. I checked the bleeding issues and there's two tiny spots of bleeding along the edges that I can live with. It's infinitely better than the mess I had on my original. Screen not coming out anymore is my biggest relief though. I haven't bothered to check the image retention yet, but I don't think that was too big of an issue really.

I want to get a better traveling case for it now. I always just snapped the smart cover on and stuffed it in a neoprene sleeve sized for a MBA, and into a backpack. I think that might have contributed to the screen coming out over time. I'll look around for sturdy and not-too-bulky hard travel case, but if anyone's got anything they they love, post a link if you don't mind. Also thinking about getting a smart cover compatible case to protect the back for general use, but I hate changing the weight and form factor--it's my favorite improvement over the original iPad.

It took me 4 attempts to get an acceptable iPad 2. I guess most people just don't notice image retention or backlight bleed, but from my experience (exchanging multiple times, looking at friends' iPads and ones in shops), it's a widespread issue, particularly with the initial production run of iPad 2s.

Kinda kills the first day purchase of the iPad 3 for me.

Okay, not really, but it's still concerning.

Yeah I'm wary too. But... dat screen. I can't wait. Plus I want to get the most amount of money for my iPad 2, so I'm planning to sell it before the launch of 3, and I'm not looking forward to being without one for too long...

There is a chance that the chassis could stay the same though... in which case backlight bleed should be really nailed down and a new panel shouldn't cause assembly problems there...

The rumors say the iPad 3 will have a new two led backlight system. The backlight bleed on the iPad 2 irritated me so much that I couldn't use the device to watch videos at night. If the iPad 3 has the same problems I'll keep exchanging it until I get a good unit.

My biggest worries about iPad 3 rumors are that it could be thicker and heavier. iPad 2's form factor was the biggest selling point for me. Its so disappointing to hear they might be taking that away. I also worry about the iPad 3 battery since will be powering so many more pixels and a double increase in processing, not to mention the possible LTE. If its thicker, heavier, and has a shorter life than iPad 2, I don't know if that's worth it just for retina. But then I haven't seen retina on an iPad yet, and I know I'll be singing a different song when I do.

But I wasn't planning to get iPad 3 anyway. Maybe by iPad 4 they'll have the best of both worlds in a slim package, assuming these rumors have any legs to stand on anyway.

Hopefully the iPad 3's screen will be optically bonded which always reduces backlight bleed.

So this isn't strictly an iPad question, but I just got my iPad 2 and now that I try to use iTunes to access the store (trying to set some podcasts to download and sync), it says it's loading but nothing actually comes up on the screen, just a white background with the iTunes Store logo.

This is on my PC, not my iPad.

Might need to update iTunes if you're not using the latest version. If you're trying this at work or school, it's possible that the iTunes store is blocked, as well.

iTunes is up to date and I'm at home. :p

I don't know what the deal is. I've uninstalled, reinstalled and updated and still no luck.

I can't see that happening. If Steve was still around he wouldn't let it happen. A thicker and heavier iPad? No way. iPad 2 is already far too heavy. They might sacrifice a bit of battery life, but I'm expecting a similar thickness, and maybe a slight weight reduction.

I really don't think it should be getting heavier AT ALL, but the 3G and 3GS were thicker than the original iPhone. Sometimes it's necessary to go backward a bit.

That's probably what I'm going to do; just wait to upgrade to iPad 4. I have a feeling that the battery tech and rest of the package will be more optimized for the retina display at that point. Then again, I just got the iPad 2 in October and am fine holding on to it this year.

Retina is going to look so good on this screen.

He was clearly just trolling guys.

My prediction:
Apple will release iPad 3 at the exact same price range as iPad 2. But keep the 16GB iPad 2 at a lower price of $399.
Will have retina display, quad-core with A6 chip, 1GB ram, better cameras to match iPhone 4S, have Siri built-in, and be slightly (barely even noticable) thicker. And LTE will replace the 3G models. Same battery life, form factor, & GPU as iPad 2.

I agree with pretty much all of this.

one thing I wish they do with the form factor: make the edges of all the plastic buttons less sharp. When I graze my thumb against the volume rocker, I end up needing bandages.

You need to toughen up your skin... learn bass or something.

I can't see the cameras matching the 4S. We'll be lucky if they match the 4.

And I can't see it being thicker either. I'd consider that a failure, and may not buy, unless there's not much in it and they reduce the weight at the same time. If it's thicker and heavier... I may wait for iPad 4.

Having owned an iPad 2 for a while now, I would buy an iPad 3 if it had an increased (i.e quadrupled) resolution. I hesitate to call it a retina display at quad-iPad res, because it is lower DPI than an iPhone 4's retina display, but it's close enough. The main reason I bought the iPad 2 , is as a replacement for newspaper & magazine subscriptions (I tend to collect too much paper) and books and for lightwieight web access (i.e as a reader). As a magazine reader it is too low res for me - I am constantly zooming in and out - trying to see the big picture, but then zooming in for text, or switching to text mode and missing out on the layout and artwork. As a pure book reader it is better, but I still wouldn't mind sharper text. There is a big fat bezel on this thing, so I wouldn't mind a 12" screen in the same form factor, but I guess they have to save something for the future (maybe when OLED comes down in price and having a 12" screen would not add to the thickness / weight / power draw?)

Quad-core is a no-brainer improvement too, but the feature I pray for most is quad XGA.

The big and fat bezel is there for a reason and shouldn't go anywhere.

Hey GAF so I'm planning to get an iPad but I'm just worrying about the next refresh. If they announce a new one and the old one gets bumped down in price will I receive the difference? Or should I just wait for the next reiteration?
