Apple iPhone/iPod touch App Discussion and Recommendations

Is there a good SMS app available? Maybe one where you can use a regular mobile keyboard instead of the QWERTY one? The QWERTY keyboard is awesome if you want to type in landscape mode but the normal numerical one is much better in portrait mode if you type with one hand.

Any recommendations for personal expense tracking software? There are a few (paid) apps on the Marketplace but I don't know where to spend my .99~4.99+HST+Dalton Tax+Credit Card Interest.

I don't think I'd use anything except for Quicken (paid software, no app) or Mint (free), and since I use quicken, I'm stuck with nothing. How it is Quicken doesn't have an iPhone app (in the US) is beyond me, when my local grocery store does.

There are apps that export to Quicken (Pocket Money, for example). You're right, though, WTF isn't there a Quicken app?

Bit of a dodgy one this, but can someone please recommend an app that has like lots of different sex positions, preferably with clear and easy to understand instructions, that you can maybe add to a 'to do' list or whatever too? ;P

So, I just spent the entire night learning all about how to root a Behold II Android phone.
I've never used an Android phone, and knew nothing about rooting them before this.

But I just finished installing a custom ROM based on Android 1.6, which is much better and faster than anything Samsung released for the device. Oh, and fuck you Samsung, for killing support of the device less than half a year after its release, and reneging on your Android 2.x promise!

So, after spending a few more hours hacking it, flashing it, and reconfiguring it, I discovered the wonder that is Swype. How the FUCK does my iPhone not have something like this? Nothing on the App Store. Nothing on Cydia.

I want... :(

ShapeWriter was available for the iPhone but has been withdrawn from the AppStore. It isn't allowed to replace the default system wide keyboard but it's still cool regardless :(

What are the best FM/AM radio apps? I'd love to listen to local radio stations as well as sports radio. Any suggestions?
TuneIn Radio, WunderRadio

I have a finance midterm this week and we are allowed to use excel... but I don't have a laptop :(

Any excel likes on the app store? Or a finance calculator? I just need to do some simple NPV or IRR calculations. Anything else I have a normal calculator for

I searched on itunes but everything seemed to have really low reviews

I have an ipod touch (I also have a G1 android phone)

iKamasutra is pretty good. It has a to do list and you can keep track of which ones you've done. A very robust app!

I read about ShapeWriter, but heard that it was half-assed on the iPhone, for obvious reasons. Are they still alive? Their forums are spam central now. Regardless, the whole matter is moot, since it's no longer available anyway.

Keeping an eye on Blindtype, but so far... nothing.

ShapeWriter was acquired by some company and I have no idea what they are doing with it. BlindType was acquired by Google so forget about that one too. It ultimately depends on Apple and they proved unwilling to look beyond the regular software keyboard.

What is the best Wikipedia app? Articles certainly looks promising but the price kinda turns me off. Anyone got a cheaper alternative that still has a good style?

He said he submitted more then one screenshot but for some reason Apple used one. Anyway he's having a great time seeing what users bought it from what countries so thanks to anyone who may have done so from
here.

Quicken doesn't feel this iPhone stuff will take off.

Intuit is historically late to the market. Don't worry, they'll overpay for a solution that they could have developed themselves... just like they had to with Mint.com.

I'm going to assume this thread is the uniform iOS thread. I never know where to post iPhone/iPad apps, since there are separate iPhone and iPad threads...

Anyway, it looks like the first 3rd Party App with AirPlay is out. It's a 3rd party web browser that can send HTML5 video it encounters out over AirPlay.

Does anyone know how they are doing this? I know there is a jailbreak hack to do this, but never heard that there was some AirPlay API or something that devs could actually touch...

http://www.9to5mac.com/42501/stream-video-from-ios-browser-to-apple-tv-with-webout

Webout is an iOS browser that just hit the App Store and it allows you to stream HTML5 video to your second generation Apple TV. iOS Safari is currently not capable of streaming video to the Apple TV, only audio, so this app fills the gap. The app is universal for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch and costs $0.99 on the App Store. Let us know how it works out for you.

there's now a version of iTeleport available free for the first 30 days. after that you can purchase more time in 30 day chunks, or buy unlimited use.

at the very least, it's a good way to demo the app, since I was always hesitant to try it because of the price. it actually works pretty well, and it can do just touchpad mode, which was something i always wanted to know.

that said, it just crashed on me. I wonder how they manage the 30 days? via device id? will an update come to change it? is it via in-app purchases? I never had to log on, for example.

TuneIn Radio, WunderRadio
Thanks to your post I just picked up Tunein-radio app for $0.99. So nice to listen to some hard to pickup local stuff as well as the popular stations. Totally worth the price even before I got to all the extras they have added like recording.

Is there a free money management app on the app store? I want something that will allow me to carefully keep track of my finances. So say i withdraw money or buy somethign online i can record it.

Balance is a super simple money management app that I use to keep track of my spending money.

Mint?

Anyone downloaded the 8MM app? Its actually pretty cool, makes me wonder why stand alone digital cameras do not have their own apps like this.

See I don't know where to post this because it is also a universal app (runs on iPad). But whatever...

AirView turns your iOS device into an Airplay receiver! Get it before it potentially gets taken off the store. You can flick a movie or song from your iPhone to your iPad or iPod Touch, from iTunes to your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch etc. and vice versa. (I haven't tested this yet though).

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/airview/id412370918

Use this application to watch AirPlay video streams from another iOS device (iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad running iOS 4.2) on the same local network, or from iTunes. Just launch AirView, then tap the AirPlay icon on the YouTube media player from another iPhone for example, and the video should start playing on AirView. This works with videos played in iTunes on a Mac or PC too. Photos are not supported yet.

Learned about this from 9to5mac:

This thread Nefertiti took off as I intended, but it's still around for the most part.

When you say vice versatile, you are saying you can stream from your idevice to iTunes? Regardless, it's free, so i've downloaded it. I,ve been wanting a no frills streaming solution without having to install stuff.

Thanks for threads up.

I downloaded a hack that let me stream from iOS to the computer. It works pretty well--I've sent Youtube videos, iPhone/iPad photos and iPhone recorded videos (I think) to my computer screen, and it's pretty neat.

This app allows you to use your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad to be the monitor/viewer that iOS devices send the video to.

Maybe I'm being stupid, but how does this work?

My laptop and iPhone are on the same network. When I have the app open, and play a video on iTunes, the AirPlay options in iTunes only says My Computer.

Try closing iTunes and opening it again?

I seem to be able to get some videos, but not all--my iTunes digital copies of Back to the Future don't seem to play, for instance. But podcast videos and the Beatles video that came with some iTunes purchase seems to work.

I don't know how to send music either.

Edit: There also is a preference option under devices called "look for airplay speakers" or something. Maybe that needs to be checked for it to work.

Yeah same here.

I saw this on tested.com, it seemed to work really well even though the guy said he was spinning faster than what should've been optimal speed.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/360-panorama/id377342622?mt=8

360 panorama takes 360 panorama photos without you having to take a zillion individual photos--you simply spin around (slowly) and it does it automatically.

$2
Capturing panoramas has never been easier! Just tap the screen and pan your phone camera in any direction. You'll see your panorama being built in realtime as every incoming frame is processed. When you're done, you can instantly save your panorama or share via email or Twitter--no need to wait for it to stitch. View your panoramas as photos or experience them in immersive 360 View. There is nothing else like it!

Me too only had it a couple of days, should make a GAF users thread. I'm Gowans007

I like it but I don't like how hard it is to find new people to follow (other than the popular people who tbh don't need more followers!).

I'm Jedeye Sniv, I added you as well.

btw, is that your kid on your last picture? Jeez, I remember the thread you had about naming him, he looks like he'll be down the pub in just a few years!

Haha, I just posted in the ipad thread a response pretty suchlike this. I just don't get it. I keep rereading the description to see if it offers what I think it says it offers, but I can't get it to work.

My ONLY clue is that some blog somewhere mentioned you have to have at least some airplay legal device on the network - maybe the app can't authenticate, but can only piggyback on an existing broadcast?
