MLB At Bat lives up to the rave reviews and then some. It's an amazing app. One of the few that makes me feel like we're finally reaching convergence.

Everything I hear about this sounds cool. I wish the NHL would put out a similar app. Although I hear the MLB app is limited by blacking out local home teams. That would disappointment me as if I were to get it, I would only follow home teams.

Is there any kind of map software yet? I like google maps but I wish there was something that worked like google maps but didn't require internet connection. I don't need it to locate me I just want to be able to see a map and get list directions. Would the new tom tom software work like I want?

I saw an app like this for my city when I searched for my city out of boredom, an offline map app. It's worth searching offline maps or your city/state on the App Store to see if one exists in your area too.

Only video is blacked out, which does suck. You do get the audio streams though, along with a plethora of up-to-the-second stats.

Oh cool, that's good. Is the audio just from the video broadcast or is it the radio feed? I hope other leagues catch on and create their own. Would love to have an NHL app =)

Offers audio from both home and away team radio broadcasts, which is pretty damn sweet.

Now that is really cool. I love how XM has radio feeds from all the MLB and NHL games but what sucks is they only broadcast the home team's radio broadcast. Heh wish I followed baseball more as the app sounds awesome and well worth the money. I sorta fell out after the big strike back in the 90s. Still love playing MLB 09 though.

Hmm Some of my favorites:

TweetDeck - Awesome Twitter App (I use it on my PC as well) you can have multiple lists to keep friends, news, etc separate. (FREE)

ESPN ScoreCenter - Great score checking app, you can add you favorite teams and sports.

Games: (All cost)
Tiger Woods - Great golf game
Peggle - Classic
Fieldrunners - Awesome for those who love tower defense
Contraption - Awesome physics-based puzzle game
Zombieville - Awesome zombie side-scrolling shooter

I just got:

Buster: The Chicago Bus Tracker
Pretty awesome. Lets you know how far away buses are and how long it will take them to get to you.

Man, Shazam is some sort of voodoo magic. I just got a mic for my ipod Touch and it's picking up stuff left and right.

Couple of my current favorites:

i.TV - Full tv guide based on your location / provider. It also can link to your Tivo so you can set up a recording right then and there.

Runkeeper - Uses the gps to track runs (and other activities) including mileage and mph. It then overlays your route on a google map.

I used Shazam at a wedding with a crowded room that was talking and all vocal and it still picked up the song playing in the background. I was amazed.

Here are my non-gaming apps. I'll try to list the not previously mentioned first:

Yelp - Even if you don't write reviews for Yelp, the app is great for finding restaurants near you. When you go to a new restaurant, you can quickly scan the Yelp reviews to find out what the most popular or "gotta try" dish is in the place you're sitting. Because of Yelp, I stopped using Urbanspoon. The full website is a better way to find new food destinations near you. If you write for Yelp, you can upload photos taken from your phone to the restaurant review.

To Do's - Keeps track of To Do lists.

Units - Conversion app: temperature, metric system, currency exchange rates (downloads the daily rate) that's been useful.

Photoswap - Picture swapping app. Take a picture with the iPhone camera, send it to a random stranger (who also has the app), they can reply with their own picture.

Fiatlux - Turns your phone into a flashlight.

Closet - Take pictures of clothing in your wardrobe (separated out by category). Then when you're out shopping, you can pull out pictures of your wardrobe to see if you already have something like what you're buying, or you can see if it matches something you're considering purchasing.

Jared - Jared sings. I love it.

Tiny Violin - When someone busts out the sob story, you can mock them with the world's smallest violin (which makes sounds as you play it).

Now Playing - Movie review/showtime/Netflix all-in-one app

Flixster - I use this solely because of the link to Facebook. I can mark movies I want to see and check out what my friends are looking forward to. Now Playing doesn't let me do that.

Pandora - Mobile streaming radio that learns your preferences, a la Yahoo! Launchcast or Last FM. I am slowing transitioning over to Last FM because of Xbox, so I may swap this out with a Last FM app.

Facebook - This app actually doesn't do a lot of things that the main site does, so I don't use it exclusively over the real website. I mainly use it to upload mobile photos and check my notifications.

Shazam - Great for finding what song is playing on the radio. More importantly, it keeps track of which songs you tagged, so you can download them later.

CheckPlease - Tip calculator which is great if you're eating with large groups and want to split a check 8 ways while adjusting the tip percentage up or down. You can also have it round off so you're not splitting hairs over pennies (although you can do that too).

Twitterific - Twitter client. I don't twitter much, but when I do, this app seems to do the job.

Wikipanion - Mobile optimized version of Wikipedia, which is always useful.

Dial Zero - I rarely use this. It's supposed to give you hints and tips to get around automated customer service lines. Type in the place you're going to call and reader comments tell you what numbers to hit to get a real person. I tried it once with Time Warner (who is notorious for having horrible customer support), and the numbers posted didn't help at all.

I'd love a KORG app like the one on DS, or anything like the PS1 game Music, that would be awesome. Esp. if you could use samples from your music on the iPhone.

The Beejive 3.0 update was really unstable. While I didn't have any problems with the Push notifications, it frequently crashed on me when changing the keyboard orientation from portrait to landscape. And from what it sounds like there's a lot of other issues with it too. I'm guessing they rushed it out to be one of the first Push-supported apps, which obviously bit them in the ass. The app has always been rock solid before this.

Unfortunately for them, Apple is annoyingly slow at approving updates so even if it's fixed tomorrow it'll probably take at least a week to actually make it on the App Store for us.

Thanks for the m.nbc.com link and the Comic Touch app. So many apps I still need to try out.

I gotta stop being a cheap skate and buy some apps lol.

I've gone through 3 Netflix apps and iRentMovie is the best one. It has the best search capabilities (i.e. you can search by All, Blu-ray, DVD, and Instant Watch). Instant Watch search only is a must if you stream movies and most apps lack that capability.
Do any of the apps have support for the friends feature? Checking queues, ratings, quizzes etc..

If you think Shazam is impressive, you should check out Midomi. You can sing the song yourself to Midomi and it will identify it.

But if you already know how to sing the song, why would need to identify it? If I know a song in passing, but don't know the name of a song, there's a good chance I don't know it well enough to sing it.

Well sometimes I know like the key chorus of a song but that doesn't mean I know the name or the artist.

Now that I've got 32GB of space to fill, I'd really like to find a few different field guides to fill some of the space, i.e. field guides to North American animals, plants, etc. Seems they have a few for birds, but not so much for everything else. Anyone know differently?

I would like to know this also.

I'm wondering if a pdf viewer wouldn't suit you more, and just load it with a bunch of pdfs. I'm not sure how well the new 3GS can handle larger pdfs (I used to choke my 3G on some I carried around), but I guess it also depends on the app you are using.

NOt to mention, you could always use an online resource and make a bookmark.

Let me tell you from working in the Media department at Best Buy, there's tons of cases where people know the lyrics/chorus but don't know the name of the song or who sings it. I've had that problem quite a few times too.

Plus, it's fun to sing to your iPhone and watch it identify the song.

Yeah, I'm willing to look at all of the angles here - checked to see what amazon had available through Kindle, Stanza via fictionwise, etc. I don't think I've seen an online resource that's either well-formatted for a portable device or just well-formatted, period. The search continues.

How big were the PDFs that caused your 3G to choke?

I can't remember the actual memory size (probably a few MB), but these were large pdfs in dimension - they were maps. I was using a program called Air Sharing, which is basically a storage solution. I wouldn't say it's the best of them, but they released it at an introductory price of 'free' back in the day, and I got it then, It has served my purpose. It lacks searchable features and things, but I mostly use it to carry bus schedules around. It probably just uses the built in PDF viewing api, so you could always just email yourself and find out what the iPhone can handle.

I imagine a 3GS could handle larger ones more betterer.

uh sucks that brushes doesnt support layers :(

I guess. I'm not good either way :(. Maybe once we get rocking, we can have a thread to show off :). I think that's the charm of this app - it IS so simple, but with just the bare tools, you can still achieve a lot. It's like a challenge.

And in other news....

The Appstore gets its first app with nudity:

http://www.macrumors.com/2009/06/25...now-allows-for-explicit-content-on-app-store/
"We uploaded nude topless pics today. This is the first app to have nudity."

...by way of the parental controls. It's an app with online access to a bunch of pretty girl pictures. I wonder how it bypasses copyright? I bet it will get taken down from that front.

If it gets more hardcore than this...

Well, actually, it doesn't need to. Even if it just stays with toplessness, you can kiss the competitors goodbye. Minor stuff like this will sell through the roof.

It's going to depend on how the public react.

This will be interesting.

Seconded. With the help of Lose It!, I lost 50 pounds. No joke.

Wow, congratulations dude. Back in high school I dropped 70, and the only technology I had to aid me was a Walkman and a Nordic trac manual treadmill. (manual treadmills for the weightloss win, btw)

The developer added the pics with nudity to his server after the app was approved, it wasn't allowed. Apple already took it down.

So I bounce between SF and NYC quite a bit, and I have the former pretty much covered with iCommute SF and iBART. What's a good mass transit app for New York? Subway-only is okay, subway/LIRR is great, subway/LIRR/bus is fantastic.

General stop locations relative to my position is fine (with service advisories, whether or not the line's running, etc.), I'm pretty sure that it'll be a cold day in hell before the MTA gets enough of an act together that they'll tag everything with GPS like SF has. :P

I'm copying over my post here since it fits the the topic.

I want to point out for first-time iPod/iPhone owners here that ipod earbuds are some of the worst you can buy. They are even terrible for their $40 retail price. Not knowing any better is not an excuse for sbjecting yor music to those.

However, the Apple In-Ear Headphones are solid and extremely underrated. They are the sub-$100 headset/IEM that all iPhone 3GS owners should choose. (the 3G doesnt support the volume controls and may not support the hold-for-voice-command feature, havent tested it).

One warning though, they recieve their praise from audiophiles like me in large part due to their neutral tone quality, something rarely seen in anything but expensive enthusiast sets. The bass is satisfying and punchy(if you know how to wear IEM's and have a proper seal), but will seem weak at first listen coming off of the boomy, exaggerated bass that dominates the low-end market. Take a minute to adjust and you'll appreciate the clarity and detail you've been missing.

I just got the in ear phones as well. I really like the in line mic and remote for my 2g Touch. You are completely right about the bass and the clarity of the sounds. Lots of details I miss previously. However, I am getting a little bit of distortion from some of my tracks, something that didn't pop up on a cheaper set of buds.

Sorry to sound like an audio noob but what is there to know about how to wear in-ear headphones other than to stick them in your ears?

The only thing to really worry about is to get a good airtight seal. Experiment with tip sizes and positioning. In-ears are only as good as how you wear them.

All I know is I lost one of the "small" doohikeys that go into my ear and now I can't wear them anymore. None of the other sizes fit. :(

Can I order replacements from Apple?

Is there an app that handles Google Calendar integration better than the default Calendar program that comes pre-loaded on the iPhone?
