Apple releases Safari 4 beta

I never realized how much I depended on seeing that progress bar. Several times now I've clicked links and thought it didn't work because I didn't notice anything change. I always expect to see blue appear.

That tiny spinner is way too inconspicuous.

It's not bad. It was definitely a needed boost. Is there any adblock ability that works with the beta yet? That seems a bit much to ask, but I won't use a browser that doesn't have that ability. I know the old Safari had some okay add ons for that, but it's probably way way too early to think it's compatible.

Those looking for an ad blocker for the beta could try GlimmerBlocker. It should work with the beta and other browsers since "GlimmerBlocker is implemented as an http proxy". I found its filter subscriptions aren't as robust as Adblock Plus, but with a little tweaking it should be up to par with other filter subscriptions.

Glancing over the beta's new features, I'm curious about what happened to the "Save as web application" feature that was in the developer preview.

Hm, do you normally have the status bar on? My eyes always look there to identify that something is loading, not the address bar.

I don't like the reload button being moved to the right of the address. Thats probably the thing I hate the most in Internet explorer. I like the tabs on top I guess, but I still wish there was a new tab button I could put in the toolbar. I just don't like that they're forcing you to use these placements and not giving you the option to move them around.

The top sites is cool, but i dont really get a feel for which website is which since the picture is so scrunched up I can't tell what website is being shown.

I dont think i'm going to change to this from firefox though. Smartbookmark Bar hides the names of the bookmarks and only shows the icon. It saves space and just looks good.

It's a step in the right direction, though.

another interface bitch:

if i'm on a webpage and click on "top sites" button, then change my mind and want to go back to the page i was looking at, re-clicking on the top sites button does nothing. instead, i have to use the back button on the toolbar.

the top sites button should act like the bookmarks button right next to it. hit it once to go to top sites, and once more to return to the page you were at.

tsk, tsk. Inconsistent UI behaviour. Bad Apple.

isn't that what the beta is for? can't you submit suggestions like that?

Damn, this thing is fast! I like how the different pages and mailboxes of GMail load faster than on the native OS X mail app :lol

This might be the browser to steal me away from firefox. +1 Apple

Also, you can now use control+tab and shift+control+tab to move between different tabs, just like in Firefox.

EDIT: I wish there was a way to put back the reload button. It makes absolutely no sence to separate it from the < > buttons.

Yes, I always turn on the status bar. However, one of the nice things about the blue progress meter was that it was so easy to see. You could see it in your peripheral vision.

I'd often click a link and then keep reading the remainder of the page in the few seconds before the next page loads. I'd know it was going to load because I could see the blue bar in my peripheral vision even when I wasn't directly looking there. Now, when I click a link, I have to actually check to see if the spinner is spinning before I know it took.

Maybe I'm just nitpicking but the blue progress bar was such a unique and welcomed feature of Safari. Taking it away seems wrong to me. Everyone, even computer novices, completely understand that simple interface metaphor.

Is there a way for us to send feedback? These problems aren't technically considered bugs, so I don't want to send the feedback that way.

feedback page

I click the link for Mac OSX and then the option for Internet/Mail within the form.

it's possible they might add a direct Safari link there soon.

This is going to sound stupid, but how do I turn it on? I don't see it in preferences.

Who really uses the toolbar buttons and not cmd-R, cmd-T, cmd-W, cmd- <--, cmd- -->

??

EDIT: Oh, and anyone who has a multi-touch trackpad and isn't using three-finger swipe to change tabs *has not lived*

When i'm on the laptop, it's all about trackpad gestures. thanks to multiclutch

3 finger swipe left/right for tabs.
3 finger swipe up/down for fwd/back
rotate right to reload
rotate left to close tab.

good stuff.

As with all Apple software, it is still horrendous on Windows.

I do quite like it, though. But I need a speedy browser and nothing tops FF3 yet.

Hmm, I like your setup. I'd swap the first two to have next/prev working like it does in Safari by default, but looks like I'll look into the multiclutch after all.

Oh no I didn't think about 1Password not working with this beta version noooooooooooooooo

You need to tweak 1Password a little bit to get this done. Close both Safari and 1Pass and open

/Applications/1Password.app/Contents/Resources/SupportedBrowsers.plist

Find the Key named Safari and look for MaxBundleVersion underneath. You will see 5528.1 as the maximum version. Change that to 5528.16, save and quit. Now you can reenable Safari from the 1Password preferences and then start Safari 4 and add the button to the toolbar.

I never really knew how much I used the "reload" button until today :lol I just would like the option to put it back next to < & >.

I don't have a multitouch macbook, but you are right, 3 finger swipe is SEX.

I'm sure there will be an official 1password update within a day or two. they are crazy fast updaters

Is there a way to force Safari 4 to identify certain sites for inclusion to Top Sites? I have my bank and bill sites, as well as GAF, WordPress, CNN and Facebook as my speed dial in Opera and I'd like to retain this. I took out all of the other crap it was trying to put up in my Top Sites and now only have 4 tabs... help!

Mine is:

swipe left/right for tabs
swipe up to close
swipe down to open
rotate left to reload
rotate right to back

interesting. not sure that I could get used to rotating right (which i associate with moving fwd or clockwise) for the "back" navigation.

do you take advantage of the loose gesture needed for the rotate command?

I just keep my index finger stationary and swipe up or down with the middle finger to do a rotate. much easier and faster than twisting my hand.

Ah nice, I hadn't consciously realize a rotate was that easy. Because a real rotate-right is kind of awkward with a right hand, I only use it sparingly. That's why Back is mapped to it, as I probably go back once a year.

its really nice and finally tempted me to move back from FF3, because topsites can just about replace awesomebar since i only visit a few sites (and coverflow history search looks cool)

but i dont see whats smart about the address bar, isnt it just like the old one? if i type gaf i want it to match neogaf and it doesnt...

comparing firefox's fugly rendering of google.com versus safari its an easy choice to make the switch

The address bar is indeed less awesome than the Awesome bar, and way less awesome than the Omnibar, but I do like how they segment the types of results out.

Here's what I get when I type 'ne' into mine:

Uninstall Google Gears and Glims if you ahve them. Otherwise make sure you have nothing in /Library/Input managers. After that, you could try trashing your safari preferences in ~/Library/Preferences

I might have to downgrade back to 3... since coverflow is fucking up with my bookmarks folder...

I have around 5,000 bookmarks.

.

You can change the size of the top sites, os it only shows six pages - it's pretty large then and should be easily identifiable. I kind of like the 24 page one - I feel like a Bond villain with dozens of TV screens, monitoring the world.

I really like it, I've been using FF3 for a while but Safari is damn fast. Integrating the tabs into the top bar is nice, it does save some screen real estate even though i'm not that used to it yet. I think I may end up sticking to my native browser now.

Also, is there a restore tab keystoke? I will miss that feature if they don't have it.

You know, the title bar text is irritating me and I'm not sure why. On my MBP it's just a little too small and a little too... bold? The text is thick and almost shaded against the gray background and hard to read.

No! Mapping cmd-Z to this was the one thing I thought was useful in Glims.

click edit on the bottom left hand corner of the screen.. then you can select which sites you want to pin to the Top Sites list.

Yeah, but how can you just pull in some bookmark that isn't showing up in the top sites window at all?
