Apple Watch |OT| Apple invents the watch!

Why are they doing that? I don't accept its for marketing purposes because why market exclusivity for a company that millions have bought into?
Gold watches for the 1% and exclusive options for the rich and famous. I love Apple products but this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I suppose that's what happens when you hire fashion people.

They're trying to create that halo, but I really do hope some of these will get released later for the public.

At least the obvious red, navy, yellow. Not to mention orange. Wallet is weeping in anticipation though.

I canceled my kickstarter pledge for the Click adapter at the last minute yesterday. I may save up for the Milanese loop instead.

You're not the only one. Juste after the last stretch goal was reached they posted a new message saying that one of their bigger backers (10k I think) was suddenly retracting. Seems sketchy ...

I have a dual USB 12w charger at work, I might get another so I can have my phone and watch cables together.

And it wasn't the first, or second, time this happened.

No change in order status yet....

If it follows the usual Apple hardware preorder pattern, it might not be until Monday that we see shipment notifications/status changes.

Sometimes UPS/FedEx show shipping labels before Apple changes anything in status. To check, go to either fedex.com or ups.com and search tracking by reference number. The reference # is the phone number on the account you used to order (just the numbers, no dashes). Or, if you join UPS My Choice you can choose to be notified when a shipment is created coming to your address.

I haven't heard of either technique being fruitful yet.

Is anyone keeping tabs of Watch enabled apps?
No, but I've been feeling like nearly all my apps have updated to support the watch. I'm starting to feel like all I'm gonna need are podcasts and a thing for my Philips hue lights.

Workflow is supporting apple watch...... That's.... Weird?
What?

That could either be completely useless or super interesting.

^^
Whoa that site is cool as hell!!!!!!!
I like the idea of having a glance that's just local tweets from your city/direct vicinity. Could be a neat way to see what's going on or for giant disasters or whatevs.

Watchaware.com has a great list of all watch apps - http://watchaware.com/watch-apps

And they have little mini-demos too.

A lot of these seem incredibly unnecessary. But, there you have it. :)

I shouldn't have seen this.

I'm already make a big list of apps to get or check out (translation: hoard). It's the iPhone/iPad all over again. And that's even before the Watch App Store.

Oh god.

How long till people demand for folders and 64GB.

Hmm, I figured many apps would just work via your phone and notifications. I don't think I want to load the phone up with apps. I mean passbook collects things from apps on the iphone and I'd want a passbook like app for boarding passes. But I don't want an individual airline app on the phone.

I'm going to be pretty choosy on apps on the watch as I think much of the functionality should come from an app on the phone.

Fitbit surge? Heart rate, GPS, notifications and music controls, 7 day battery. Chunkier than then other fitbits though

Yeah man, but an app that makes your phone fart remotely by pressing a button on your watch.

Passbook is on the Watch, btw. http://www.apple.com/watch/built-in-apps/

I agree. There are plenty of apps I've got on my iPhone I'm not going to bring over to my Watch. Mostly I'm going to install apps I'm already interacting with in quick bursts on the phone - Overcast, Alarm.com, Deliveries, 1Password. The benefit to an airline app if you travel a lot is being notified of flight/gate changes and such on the Watch - that stuff, as a Glance, would be helpful. I'll probably install the Delta app and just leave it off to the outer edge for just that purpose.

Heh, those airline apps, I install and then uninstall after my trip as I rarely use them. Travel about 4 times a year right now. So yeah, I'll install an airline app on the watch, but it will also get uninstalled after its use. I want the phone, with better battery life and better cpu, to do the heavy lifting. Maybe at some point, notifications will be more tailored to supporting apple watch where everything, even an 'at a glance' functionality on the watch is just a request to the phone and it happens so quickly that the user doesn't care which device did the heavy lifting of making an easily read GUI. That GUI wouldn't be just text, but also would support additional feedback to the phone like providing a form to answer questions.

It feels good to be on the first round of this new paradigm. Not sure any of my assumptions are right, but I'm excited about where we are starting and where we will end up 3 or 4 iterations away.

I hope at WWDC there's a focus on encouraging app developers to provide more granular notifications in their apps. Like Nilay Patel's review was talking about Instagram Like notifications interrupting conversations. It'd be great if social apps allowed for "VIPs" like Apple's contacts system. With too many apps it's an all-or-nothing approach right now.

I think there is still room for more functionality than just notifications. For example, I wouldn't mind Skype on my Watch. As of right now, all I'll be able to do is get notifications of calls or messages with no way to respond.

Battery life is already somewhat terrible. A camera would require a larger PMIC which means more battery consumption.

I bet the 2nd generation will have a front facing camera. The facetime from your wrist urge is too strong.

The first version struggles to move basic location data from the phone to the watch, it would be more than a massive leap required for it to be able to stream video bi-directionally

The Watch is essentially going to make it an inevitability, if those app developers actually want their customers to see the notifications and keep them engaged in their apps and services. Since if it's an all-or-nothing situation, people are going to opt for nothing if the alternative is stupid and mindless notification hell.
I've avoided apps that badger me incessantly with notifications for years now, have my Facebook notification settings tuned so that I receive almost none... it's sad that the Watch had to exist before app developers would even consider identifying the problem.

So it's just like the App Store then. ;)

Although I am intrigued by Capitan and Alo, those seem like really smart practical apps to have on the Watch.

Didn't they do that for that garage door app they showed in the march event? Not saying it look particularly good, but it looks like they did that.

Anyone know what's going on with the modern buckle? The black one says "currently unavailable" on the store. Has it always been like that? Can't be bought separately?

From my experience, even when Apple tries to suggest best practices at WWDC, devs do whatever they want anyways, as long as they can get away with it.

It'll be interesting to see the actual quality of the stuff in action with the way apps work now ("app" being on the watch, "extension" on the phone/in the phone app):
https://developer.apple.com/library...p.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40014969-CH3-SW1
Your WatchKit app and WatchKit extension work in tandem to implement your app’s interface. When the user interacts with your app on Apple Watch, your WatchKit app chooses the appropriate scene from your storyboards to handle that interaction. For example, if the user views your app’s glance, it chooses your glance scene. After choosing the scene, WatchKit tells the paired iPhone to launch your WatchKit extension and create the objects needed to manage that scene. When the scene is fully configured, it is displayed on Apple Watch. This transfer of information between the WatchKit app and WatchKit extension happens transparently behind the scenes.
Supposedly the third party apps suck right now but maybe the update Apple mentioned will address that a bit. Then they'll probably talk about native apps at WWDC (they mentioned something about that a while ago).

Yeah that was a video (or image) stream, and the shutter app streams video from the phone camera.

Not sure if it was always like that, but if it's there it's going to be for sale. Like the black stainless link and Edition specific ones (w/gold accents) aren't on there at all.

My prediction is that this will play out just like the iPhone when it was introduced. Initially people will say "why?" because the app offerings will be underwhelming, and then it will progress to "omfg, how did I live without this" once developers get their shit together.

Dem exclusive bands.

Apple pls.

I'll need a fiery color at some point, pink is nice but doesn't cut it. I want that red or orange one.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a red one for Project RED like they do for most other devices. The watch will have a band, like the iPhone and iPad cases and iPod colors did. The only reason I might doubt this is because some might get upset that it looks too much like the currently available red band that they usually show with the gold Watch Edition in promo pictures.

My expectations about running app extensions remotely over bluetooth or wifi are completely in check. I can already imagine the nightmare.

It's just the functionalities that look so cool.

But yeah, before the Watch App Store (which is coming soon) I'll have in mind that if I want immediate interactions I'll have to resort to the native first party apps.

(wonder if they'll implement some sort of cacheing that will make up for it or even keep those extensions feasible instead of being a weird thing nobody's going to use after native 3rd apps are up)

Tried on the sport I ordered today and was surprised how much I liked it. Very light, band feels good, and the crown is smooth. Apps felt good and interaction was easy. Not sure why people can't understand how to use it. Looking forward to running some code on it when it arrives!

That's just it, though, they won't.
Purely anecdotal, but the app I am working on is getting a notification revamp before we start working on a watch app. Our iPhone app is already a bit to bothersome for active users, and pushing that to a wearable would be a bad experience.

I do hope we start hearing some stuff soon. Friday is going to come quick. I'd at least like to know when within that time frame. In my head I keep thinking it's going to be on Friday but that might not be the case. Hopefully my 3:02 am Order was enough.

I don't know if anyone's discussed this in depth yet but for those buying extra bands, how are you deciding which size to get?

I tried both sizes of the leather loop, and while both 'fit' just fine, the length of the flappy magnetic bit was, I'd say, a little too short with the M and a little too long with the L—at its tightest, about a centimetre away from the watch face.

The specialist I spoke with said I should go with the smaller one as "leather expands". Whilst this is true, I'm not sure it applies to this particular band design.

Does your order say April 24th?

I am just curious.

I ordered last night and mine says June. Apparently that was the case for people who ordered Day 1 during the day.

I ordered 3:02 am my time which is 12:02 pacific on launch day. My delivery estimate is 4/24-5/8. I don't think anyone had a solid date of 4/24. Maybe they just wanted a little leeway with the dates.

None of the models had a firm date of 4/24. All of the initial batches were labelled 4/24-5/8, as you say.
