Apple Watch |OT| Apple invents the watch!

This has to be a joke. Walking out inconveniences multiple rows of people as you obstruct their view and make them twist around in their seats both when you leave and when you return.

Not even the people directly next to you will see the watch if you hold it down near your lap. It'll be outside their periphery.

Checking for emergency situations or extremely important time-sensitive alerts during a movie is socially acceptable, if you can do it without anyone noticing. It's much easier to do with a watch than a phone because the smaller screen is easier to hide and doesn't emit as much total light.

Pulling out a phone during a movie is annoying to others.

I won't be checking my watch either. I will shut it off for two hours and survive.

Honestly had mine on during Avengers and no one around me that were my friends noticed. It just isn't that bright when compared to a giant phone screen illuminating my face.

I wasn't reading emails or anything but would look down at what notification came through from the silent taptic.

If I were in the theater and I saw you do that, I'd ask you to stop. And if you did it again, I'd get an usher. Just because you, the wearer of the device, thinks none of your friends didn't notice doesn't mean someone else in the theater didn't. Any little light-up screen shines like a beacon in a dark theater. I honestly don't know what is worse: checking your phone in the theater or bringing in a baby. :p

Seriously though I've been in a few movies with my Apple Watch and when the screen illuminates (say, when reaching for popcorn), it is nowhere near as distracting or visible as a smartphone screen.

On the dimmest setting, it's less bright than most glow-in-the-dark watches. Which are still a thing somehow.

So does the screen always illuminate upon notification? I'm actually kinda surprised by that..

No, it only lights up if you raise your wrist or tap it. The annoying thing is that when you disable wrist raise, it also disables detection for when you lower it. So the screen stays on for like 17 seconds on the watch face and about 22 seconds if you're anywhere else in the OS.

It seems shutting the thing off in the movie theater is the only courteous thing to do.

Can't you cover the screen with your hand to put it to sleep?

Actually... yes. I was trying that, but noob me didn't realize the force touch sensors play a role. You just have to apply pressure.

Cover to Sleep works anywhere in the OS, and it simply turns the screen off. You don't have to hold- just slap it and it'll instantly go dark. Cover to Sleep does not activate Silent Mode.

Cover to Mute works only on a notification. Cover with pressure and hold for 3 seconds. It turns the screen off AND enters silent mode so your watch won't play sounds, but it will still give physical feedback.

Disabling Cover to Mute from the settings does not disable Cover to Sleep.

Also, activating Silent Mode on the Watch screen will toggle MUTE on the iPhone's Watch settings page. They're the same thing but they have different labels, confusingly.

I brought mine to the Avengers tonight and decided to just turn it off right before the movie started. I just find if rude/inconsiderate to be using electronics in the theater while the movie is playing.

Wrist raise seems to be a split-second to slow. What do you guys think?

Sometimes it works flawlessly and sometimes I have to awkwardly lower/reraise my wrist for The screen to come on. It's annoying at times.

Exactly.

It's a black background watch and depending on the color of the text it can be pretty dark. No one around me will actually see it unless you are leaning over and on top of my head which is never the case. If you are doing that, then you clearly had an agenda beforehand.

I totally understand with a phone but with a 42mm watch its no more noticeable than someone checking their Casio Watch and popping the illuminated background to check the time.. In fact, I'd say the Casio is FAR more bright.

Or having the will power to not look at it when you feel a tap
I don't go to the movie theater to pay attention to/get distracted by my technological devices. I either put my phone in Airplane Mode or turn it off. I'd do the same with the Apple Watch, except there is the added variable of the watch inadvertently turning on over getting a drink or eating popcorn. Turning it off seems to be the only sure fire way to not ruin other people's, or my own, experience at the cinema.

Having said all that, my white band 42mm Apple Watch Sport is arriving tomorrow. I am stoked. I wound up stopping into the Apple Store after a visit in the city for a friend's bachelor party. The 38mm isn't too small, as I feared, but a nice size. And the 42mm is not too big, either. They're both very functional, but I did prefer the 42mm. And, as others have said, the band is comfy and certainly will suffice.

And I fell in love with the Milanese loop band. :p

Tomorrow can't come soon enough!

My first week without an Apple Watch
Neven Mrgan said:
Like many geeks, I haven’t worn a watch since high school. Having an extra gadget on my wrist just seemed silly, given that I already carry all the standard gadgets we’ve all had forever (5″ smartphone, tablet, laptop, fitness band, white earbuds, pill box, vape pen, vape jam). However, the promise of Apple’s more-than-a-watch watch changed my mind. I confess: I stayed up until midnight on launch day so I could order an Apple Watch and get it as soon as possible (late May). So, here’s my first week without an Apple Watch...
still waiting :/

Apple Watch’s Digital Crown Mess!
Ric W said:
In my short period with the Apple Watch, I noticed how confused people are when clicking on the digital crown, including Apple Store employees. The digital crown is Apple Watch’s primary button, akin to the iPhone’s home button. Being curious as to why people were confused, I started mapping out the principal interface states of the watch (which took ages!)...

I’m going to add a quick suggestion for a cleaner, more consistent and logical digital crown clicking behaviour, still using three screens...

I just got an email from apple asking if I want to schedule an online appointment with one of their specialists to help with setup and answer any questions.. Are they really offering that to everyone or is it just for people who bought AppleCare? That seems like they'd need a lot of people to handle the appointments regardless. It's a nice thing for them to do for free.

Everyone. My wife did it. She said she knew more about the watch than the apple employee and that she was inundated with marketing survey questions.

Looking at Apple's upcoming products, I am going to be so broke. This fall I'm getting a new iMac and iPad Pro (if it is competitive for artists). Next Fall I'm getting an iPhone 7 (which will be free so no worries there I guess) and quite possibly Apple Watch 2. Sheesh.

Is this why your dinner consists of a piece of bread with a slice of cheese and hot sauce on a disposable plate?

Taking out your phone (or watch in this case) is totally unacceptable at a movie, the bright light can be seen rows away, no matter how much you think you are hiding it (don't forget, the rows behind you are higher than yours, especially at an IMAX theater). This is why theaters say "no texting" and will throw out someone for doing it. If you are in such an emergency situation that you NEED to respond immediately to a notification, and aren't willing to leave the room to look rather than shining the equivalent of a directionless flashlight all around the room, then you shouldn't be in a theater.

you're back lol, and you're one lucky SOB that yours is already preparing for shipment after ordering it yesterday

edit: the 38mm ships in 4-6 weeks but the 42mm ships in July, did Apple have zero clue that people wanted the bigger model?

Wtf is going on here?

You ordered the green and got it 3-5 days later. Decided you didnt want it, decided you want another, and its already on its way to you 3-5 days out.

I have 3 orders made on the 10th (stainless steel) that have not moved.

Trust me; there is no x or y moves fastest variables as you may think. You are getting dreadfully lucky.

the 38mm SS (which he claims to ordered) ships in 4-6 and his is preparing to ship after one day of ordering. I think he has a connection inside Apple to help get his order faster so he can keep flipping them on eBay for millions of $$

Directionless flashlight all around the room?

The light emitted on one's face will be negligible since the source is less than 2 inches diagonal and there's a 50-foot screen already lighting up the room. You should be able to rest the watch against your stomach or hold it under your seat between your feet so nobody sees the face directly. You'll look like someone reaching for food or drinks, big deal.

If you need to respond to the incoming notification, you go to the hallway.

I pray I never get caught and thrown in jail.

I'm pretty sure it's just the particular model that you get.

My watch won't stay unlocked even though it's on my wrist. Just started like an hour ago. It's like it doesn't recognize that it is in contact with my skin. Anyone else have the same issue? I tried a restart and still no luck.
