Apple's Sept. 1st Event |OT| - Now with live streaming!

appleTV - this all comes down to how tied in are you to itunes for video?

if you have lots of TV shows you've purchased, or lots of digital copy, then this is pretty much the only way to get this onto your TV - short of having a mac mini under it. None of the media streamer, nor plex/xbmc/boxee will support DRM video.

if however you want to stream your ripped xvids/mkvs, then this is not for you.

I was thinking of just ripping my DVDs to an iTunes compatible format. I like the interface that Apple TV offers and how it interacts with all my other Apple Devices. Yes, that makes me an iWhore, I know.

it's not that bad. :lol

I say you'd be more of an iWhore if all your movies were in iTunes DRMed format and you needed an Apple TV to watch them on your TV.

ripping to h.264 means you can watch them on Apple TV with it's clean UI or on a ton of other devices.

The more I look at Ping, the more I hate it. It's just a way for you to advertise for the iTunes store. What a piece of garbage.

Again, the Zune Social is actually a social experience. Ping is just... crass.

I love these Steve Jobs emails. I hope this one is real

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/09/03/steve-jobs-defends-new-itunes-10-icon-against-criticism/

"Steve,
Enjoyed the presentation today. But...this new iTunes logo really sucks. You're taking 10+ years of instant product recognition and replacing it with an unknown. Let's both cross our fingers on this...

Despite all of the activity surrounding the media event, Jobs took the time to respond with another one of his brief, to-the-point emails:

We disagree.

So when can we expect to get some reviews on the iPod Touch 4g?
I imagine about Wednesday next week since I think Jobs said "shipping in a week" or something to that regards.

I know I'll be calling the Apple store near me to see if they have a store unit I can play with.

I wonder if anyone can solve this problem.

In the Music Coverflow view (Windows Vista) I accidentally resized the artwork out of view into the "top bar". While the mouse pointer is over the "top bar" the resizing hand appears but does not work, also the "sorting bar" (Name, Track#, Time etc.) encroaches into the "top bar".

I did this the week before iTunes 9 came out (yes on iTunes 8!), & I thought that installing that would fix it, but it didn't. Reading this thread after getting iTunes 10 reminded me of this minor issue.

So l installed iTunes 10 on my computer today (xp) and l have to say it seems to load faster and run smoother than 9.

Very true. iTunes isn't really shitty on Windows anymore. Still has a long way to go to be up to the level of amazingness that it is on OS X though.

You've described me pretty well - I've got a handful of TV series on iTunes that I'm unable to play on my TV now that I've moved and have my computer too far to hook up an HDMI cable. I'd build another HTPC, but the case alone would cost me what a new Apple TV does.

Also all of the digital copies I've redeemed. Yeah, I've got the Blu-rays too, but I can still just pick up the remote and fire up a digital copy when I'm too lazy to get off my ass.

How did you downgrade? iTunes 10 is super slow on my old mac.
Download iTunes 9.2.1 from here

Move iTunes 10 to the trash, log out/log in.

Install iTunes 9

After installing iTunes 9, navigate to your iTunes music folder, and look for a folder named “Previous iTunes Libraries”, duplicate the one with the latest date (should be yesterday or today; it should be whatever date that you installed iTunes 10), delete the date so it’s just called “iTunes Library”, and replace the one in your iTunes music folder with that one, and then launch iTunes 9.

You should probably look to see if you have the “iTunes 9 library file” in the Previous iTunes Library folder before you do everything. I would wait to replace the library files until after you install iTunes 9 though, that’s what I did and it worked for me. Just make sure you make backups of everything.

Get 9.2.1: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1056

Go to Users/[yourname]/Music/iTunes and move "iTunes Music Library.xml" to your desktop.

Go to Applications and put iTunes 10 in the trash. Restart your computer.

Install iTunes 9.2.1 just like you normally would. When it's done, open it up and go File--> Import and select the "iTunes Music Library.xml" from your desktop. Your settings and files will be restored to the old version.

This should work just fine.

Want to upgrade my iTouch to the new one, but I rather save it next year when they have iPad with Retina screen and cameras.

I think it's unlikely that the iPad will get Retina-level resolution. At least not next year.

I'm having a hard time deciding what size iPod to get...

I have about 8gb of music, I'll probably put a few movies on there + random videos and standup. Oh and some south park episodes. Only thing im a bit worried about is the HD video which apparently is 4-5gb per hour of video.

YEA HE SURE TOLD THEM!

wut? shit is ugly and everyone seemed to have the exact same reaction to it. it doesn't suck because it's different than the former; it sucks because it just fucking sucks.

if "we" disagrees than whoever "we" is needs their eyes checked or sense of design taste re-examined.

video recording is about 50-60MB/minute. can't remember exactly right now.

I don't see the problem with iTunes 10 other than the icon, which is obviously a non-factor in anything at all at the end of the day. software acts like it always did. I don't know if it's slow on Windows or something, but it's great on OSX. and it's magical on my SSD.

I don't know what it's doing that is so different for people.

I'm amazed at how many geeks are so offended by the new icon. It's their fucking brand they do what they want. Does it change your life in any significant way?
:lol
