Oh you mean, like just a proportionally scaled up screen, no change in ratio?

Precisely. Of course swapping to a different ratio is 'real' 4". But I think that the usability improvements in increasing from a 3.5" to a 4" by just putting extra vertical real estate are minimal. Unless they're planning to vertically stretch UI elements, they'll all be the same size, which means you're getting ~170 extra pixel rows of content. That's like, three lines of SMS. I don't care about three extra lines of SMS. Give me larger UI elements.

I could imagine people who watch lots of videos on their phone are excited, but I'm not one of those people. A screen increase by swapping ratios really seems it has all the benefits of theft over honest toil.

Ok seriously... this is terrible. I wish there better control over the manufacturers where this is leaking from.

I really miss the old days when no one had a clue what Apple was doing and their unveils would blow the socks off everyone. Even the haters! Now... almost every detail gets leaked.

I'm really hoping Apple unveils something completely different just to troll the leakers.

Almost every detail? Haha you know nothing about the device apart from potential form factor, which is hardly a detail.

FINALLY! I dropped my 4 in Vegas last October. I've been dealing with a pretty much completely shattered screen, totally nonfunctional sleep button, and a home button that only works 50% of the time. We might as well just call the accelerometer broken too.

I need this.

No. The case is just 1 out of like 12 things that have been leaked so far. The latest is the actual battery in the device. There has been more components leaked than not leaked.

You'd be surprised how relieving having a couple extra lines of text is, whether they are text messages or reading something.

each one of these, there are multiple pictures available (beside the A6 processor).

We literally have a whole phone, leaking out bit by bit for the last 2 months.

Apple is probably trying to sell 6 - 8 million of these in the first week. It is impossible to make, store, and ship 6 - 8 million of something without a few parts leaking out. It is just the nature of operating on this scale. It does suck for the surprise though.

omg I want those headphones so bad

is it crazy to think they will be higher sound quality than the current ones?

One would hope they would change the design to improve SQ - and not just fit or aesthetics. I know from experience that it's possible to get 30 or 50 dollar earbuds that sound pretty darn good so I have some hope these make the default SQ experience less... mediocre

  • What to expect: A new iPhone, iOS 6, and possibly new iPods.
  • When is it coming out?: Sept. 21, 2012.
  • What not to expect: iPad mini, new Macs, an Apple TV, a live stream of the event.
  • Leaks: There have been many, but I'd rather not put them here if you don't want to be spoiled. If you wish to go through them, check out the previous iPhone rumor thread.

I've updated the OP.

SIM tray.

So what's the deal with the SIM tray? Is it confirmed to be nano-sim? I remember when they introduced micro-sims originally, you could simply cut your existing sim card down in size to get it to fit. Will this work to convert micro-sims to nano-sims? Or will you have to buy a nano-sim replacement from your service provider?

You can cut it. The rear contacts are the same.

Finally! My HTC Desire Z has been dying for the last 3 months (darn touchscreen randomly stops working altogether), and I dislike Samsung's smartphones. What's left for me these days? iPhone. But I didn't want to buy when it'd be outdated 2 months after.

I'm ready (my wallet not as much since I have to break contract but eh. Wish the standard contract in Canada was 2 years like in the US.).

It's a white picture with a huge black 12 in the middle. Nothing else. Literally the only other thing on the page is the 5 shadow.

It's not exactly some magic eye shit.

I can't believe they're going to be dumb enough to call it the iPhone 5. It's the 6th god damn iPhone.

If they actually call it 5, I won't buy it. This 5/6 thing really bothers me. I'd be shocked if a company as supposedly smart as Apple does something this dumb.

Is it really enough just to make it longer? I wanted more screen real estate on the width too.

Longer will help me out, it will make movies and games look nicer, and allow me to read a message while responding to it in Japanese (their keyboard is taller).

A 4 inch screen at 3:2 would have smaller videos than the 16:9, and would either require a decrease in PPI, a weird scaling of apps, or require developers to change their apps for the new width (new height is free to developers in most iOS views). It would not allow any more app icons on screen than currently exist.

I agree, that is almost as dumb as not buying a phone because of the model numbering pattern.

5 makes the most sense for Apple.

The naming scheme has already been adjusted continuously over the life of the product line. Clearly, though, they wanted to save number changes for more significant iterations, but they couldn't call the iPhone 4 the iPhone 3 or some crap despite the 3GS being a spec bump release, that would be way too confusing. So it's a reboot from 4 on, where spec bumps will retain the main number and full redesigns will get a new number.

It's not the fifth iPhone, it's the iPhone 5.

The iPhone 4 was named as such because it was the 4th iPhone.

Apple backed themselves into a corner and are obviously too risk averse to get out.

They did the right thing ditching the numbering on the iPad. They need to follow suit on the phone.

I just want tim cook to come out, tell everyone it's called the iphone 5. Then flip the bird and walk off stage.

It boggles my mind that people seem to have a problem following the logic behind calling it the iPhone 5.

3G
3GS
4
4S
5

HOW FUCKING HARD IS THAT TO UNDERSTAND? Seriously having a meltdown over this shit.

it should be called "the new iPhone" like the iPad is now

It's not the fifth iPhone, it's the iPhone 5.

Well it is also the 5th major iteration in Apple's internal model numbers:

iPhone1,1 - iPhone
iPhone1,2 - iPhone 3G
iPhone2,1 - iPhone 3GS
iPhone3,1/iPhone3,3 - iPhone 4
iPhone4,1 - iPhone 4S

iPhone5,1 - iPhone 5

Also, I believed they would drop the numbering with this iPhone, but now I'm pretty sure they won't.

It makes sense because they need to differentiate between the different generations of iPhone that they have on sale concurrently. They don't need to do that for any other product line. The only other exception is the iPad - but I would say the current situation with the iPad could be a stopgap until the iPad mini takes over the lower end of the tablet range, with the iPad 2 getting phased out afterwards.

They basically confirmed it'll be called the 5 in the invitation they sent out. Not surprising.

Perhaps they did it with iPad to differentiate it between the rumored 7" iPad. iPad 3 and iPad Mini 3 etc might get a bit confusing, iPad and iPad mini is much simpler, and more akin to iPod naming conventions.
