It boggles my mind that people seem to have a problem following the logic behind calling it the iPhone 5.

3G
3GS
4
4S
5

HOW FUCKING HARD IS THAT TO UNDERSTAND? Seriously having a meltdown over this shit.
The iPhone 3GS was the iPhone 3. It was the third year and third release. But you couldn't call it a 3 because the 3G model existed. It would be confusing. It's not difficult to understand why some prefer a numbering system that recognizes the model number and release rather than just counting up every two years.

Perhaps they did it with iPad to differentiate it between the rumored 7" iPad. iPad 3 and iPad Mini 3 etc might get a bit confusing, iPad and iPad mini is much simpler, and more akin to iPod naming conventions.

That makes sense.

damn you

So are we looking at only white and black as colours? I saw some lime green casing in the old thread, what was that about?

I think a lot of people dislike the new design because it looks absolutely TERRIBLE in white.

dat charcoal tho

As I said, they backed themselves into A corner.

Once they called the second one the 3G to signify a 3G phone, they should have dropped the numbering after that instead of going 3GS.

It's going to start to sound really dumb once we get to iPhone 6 which will actually be the 8th phone.

they'll ditch numbers before they even get there.

Carrier upgrade just in time :) Hopefully the audio will improve. Or hell at least the earbuds aren't the ugly shit that's rumored.

No it won't. The number that suffixes an iPhone model is akin to a version, not indicative of exactly what generation or what release of phone it is. More people would notice and think it strange if it suddenly skipped 'Version 5'.

Dont skip.

Just call it the new iPhone.

I won't follow live blogs and I want to watch the video. Are those videos always on apple.com? How long after the conference does a camera footage usually show up?

So I wanna jump ship from AT&T and onto a better, more reasonable carrier. Anyone considering the same thing?
Was thinking of switching to Verizon for that sweet 4G LTE, but then I saw the ridiculous prices for their new 'Share Everything' plans. Sticking with AT&T and praying they get 4G LTE up where I live or at least in Philly soon.

This. Who the hell cares what number it has attached to it? The only thing that matters is if it has a name that is easy enough for people to understand when it comes to figuring out which model is which.

The one million technophiles who debate specs ad nauseam?

Same here. Looks like they just skipped the Philadelphia area on the east coast.

The iPhone 4 was named as such because it was the 4th iPhone.

Apple backed themselves into a corner and are obviously too risk averse to get out.

They did the right thing ditching the numbering on the iPad. They need to follow suit on the phone.

backed themselves into a corner? Who really cares what the thing is called?
I don't understand why people care so much about this issue, but it gets annoying reading threads about the new iPhone and people arguing ad nauseum about what it'll be called.

As a side note, what's up with the NFC antenna-looking carvings in the back plate? I realize it's unibody so it has to be machined down, but the specific pattern in the area opposite where the Apple logo sits on the back has me suspicious...

I think this would be kind of hilarious, but I definitely don't want a teardrop.

Maybe if they actually went to a true 4" screen instead of this widescreen nonsense though.
See people, I'm not alone!! Been saying this for months now.

But yeah, definitely don't want the teardrop either.

Guys it's pretty obvious Apple is in love with the iPhone 4 design. Even when the patent files where released their mock up phone (the one Sony would design) looked like the iPhone 4. Also remember how pissed Steve was when Gizmondo leaked the prototype months before it was announced. Before then no one was expecting such a radical design change. Just look at all the mook ups back then.

They will just keep iterating on the product like they done with the MacBook Pro lines, iMac's and most of their other hardware. I wouldn't be shocked if they continue to go down Porsche's design philosophy, aka 911 development through the years.

We just have to get used to this design.

Aren't there other carriers jumping into the mix this time around with very competitive prices? Felt like I read that somewhere.

If they actually call it 5, I won't buy it. This 5/6 thing really bothers me. I'd be shocked if a company as supposedly smart as Apple does something this dumb.

I'm on the 'S' cycle, so I'll wait until next year's iteration. I'm still very interested to see the improvements they make though.

Shit, I usually avoid the liveblogs to see the keynote video after it's done, but then I'll miss the start of the pre-orders if they start right away :S

I'd be perfectly happy with that. It's been 2+ years, and the iPhone 4 is still the greatest phone design of all time. Theres no reason to throw it out.

Could be the tool paths. It looks like that area might have been made thinner to accommodate a component.

Err these photos appear very different

these are the marks I'm talking about. Looks suspiciously like the typical RFID antenna design.
Supposedly, Apple has a patent on building an NFC sensor into the metal casing. If that's true, we could be getting NFC on the new phone. I really hope that's the case, because NFC won't get the jumpstart it needs until the iPhone starts packing it.

I agree with everything. It still feel it's the top cell phone design, but just needs to be taller AND wider. I felt that with the 4/4S though, making the back glass was a dumb design choice.

I still don't understand why they put the aux jack on the bottom.

That makes no sense.

Hold your phone. Now point your arm down, and put it in your pocket. Natural movement, no need to flip the phone.

As been said before - when you put your phone in your pocket, *most* people put the phone in top first, thus having the cord on the bottom of the phone would mean it's close to the top of your pocket.

That, and when on your desk, it's closer to you.

I've got my Gazelle trade-in locked at $286 for my 4S. My company will pay $250 for my upgrade. The phone will cost me $450 + 36 activation fee (BS) = $486. AC+ will bump me past my spending limit, but I'm glad it'll be mostly covered.

Can't wait!

You know, you aren't far off. That does look like an NFC antenna. I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple incorporate it now, and not open it up to the user until a later update, (like bluetooth).

It's really only because, with the new dock connector, they can't make a standing dock connector that will hold up the phone anymore. Small connector + aux jack will work.

Its a wireless antenna for certain. Its not Wifi and its not Bluetooth and given its location its highly probable (95%+) the antenna for a contact-less solution like NFC/RFID/similar.

The question is, where is the transceiver itself. I suspected they would have taken the Samsung route with the battery, but according to those who have tried - the battery is conventional in nature.

I die a little inside every time i read posts like this :(

Just checked my AT&T account and...

You are not eligible at this time for an upgrade at a discounted price...

...Additional discounts may be available on 5/07/2013.

Sounds like it's the perfect opportunity to switch to Verizon. Only thing preventing me from doing just that is the grandfathered "unlimited" data, which I'm not sure is worth it anymore.

If that's NFC, that's probably the first time that Jim Dalrymple's "Yep" is incorrect.

Its probably an NFC antenna etching:

RFID.jpg

This is the general shape of RFID and NFC antennas. More than likely "somewhere" in the design it exists. The question is whether or not it ships that way. This would be similar to earlier iPads that clearly had a space for the camera but didn't actually have a camera - Apple for whatever reason chose to not include it.

That said, there is no obvious evidence of the transceiver itself. There is routing away from the antenna, but its not clear it goes to anything which would mean that Apple toyed with the idea and then for whatever reason chose to not include it. That would be a huge mistake as it would leave the only truly compelling reason to be the screen or LTE, neither or which really provide business model innovations for Apple. It would be astoundingly dumb on their part.

Wouldn't the case make a gigantic Faraday cage around the NFC antenna making it worthless?

Though then they could "fix" it in the 5S-LTE-A edition next year...
