Unfortunately, WP8 is undoing a lot of that understated elegance
yep.

I'm still going to pick up a lumia 920 at some point to get to know the OS better, but I don't like the way the interface changed in the transition to the PC/tablet, console. It definitely seems up to par in maturity as an OS to iOS5/6, let's hope Microsoft doesn't drop the ball and becomes a viable third horse.

What have they done to the UI in WP8? I know they've changed the live tiles somewhat, but have they gotten rid of the gorgeous App UI too?

If we're talking about more than just hardware, then I have to say that WP7 blew me away when it was first unveiled.

At the time, a lot of popular apps on iOS just looked like complete ass, and the new WP7 UI gave them a new (better) life. Even basic stuff like browsing photos and contacts just looked so much nicer on WP7. Unfortunately, WP8 is undoing a lot of that understated elegance.

windowsphone_1.jpg

etc...

It was a (short-lived) quantum leap in UI design, as far as I'm concerned. And it still looks great in motion.

You know, I do think WP7 has a nice concept behind it... but a lot of those metro app designs are pure wankery.

So where and how extensively is NFC used right now?

You will hear a lot from Samsung on the subject in Q4, Lexus took the plunge earlier this year by doing advertisements with NFC, there are thousands of smart posters already in the market, contactless payment systems are undergoing certification for deployment and I have seen (and developed) several NFC solutions that are going into market in Q4 of this year at big retailers and restaurants. Hell the WiiU will stock it and there are a number of consumer electronic suppliers that will have it built in as well including TV sets and such.

Apple not launching with NFC won't slow its adoption and only serves to leave them with a patent hole when they finally do bring it to market. Its an incredible gamble on their part.

Nope, and it's getting even better too with new UI features like the camera lens. I'm going to pick up a 920 whenever Microsoft & Nokia gets their shit together and releases the damn thing.

Yeah that's the only thing I'm wondering about. It needs to be this year for me to jump ship.

Yes. The banks have been giving out the cards for a while.

Retailer adoption isn't great because it seems a lot are worried about charges because contactless is aimed at smaller payments people normally use cash for.

Presumably the <£20 thing is a government restriction? Chip and pin is legally mandated, right?

That's insane. I'm currently on Koodo in Canada, and this is what I get for $60:

6GB Data
300 daytime minutes
Unlimited incoming minutes
Unlimited evenings @ 5 + weekends
Unlimited international text/media messaging
Cross Canada local calling
Voice Mail+ Call display
How did you get that? There's nothing even close to that good offered among plans on their website.

Man. That's good.

Here in America we are getting ripped off.

HOLD UP.

Is this one of their regular plans or a special offer? I'm paying slightly more on Fido with same data but MUCH LESS of everything else.

There's no way that's a standard plan.

Is that what collections gives you?
it was a promo plan. All the telecom companies ran similar promo plans (some worse than others, some better) a while ago. Koodo had that one. It's not a retentions plan.

Anyway in Canada we still get charged for caller ID, our contract lengths are still 3 years, and lots of other stupid shit. But our data and promo offerings have definitely improved since the competition moved in and disrupted the market. America just needs the same.

I'll be taking a good look at the Windows 8 phones since I'm on my 3rd iPhone (original, 3GS, 4) and unless this 5 is a real kick in the pants, I might consider switching in December when I'm eligible for an upgrade. I'm hoping for good things from MS.

Same with my plan on Telus for my 3GS.
Mine is:

250 mins
unlimited incoming
unlimited texting
6pm/weekends free
CID/Voicemail
6gb data (works with lte duh)
some international bullshit

and the clincher....yearly upgrades. I can upgrade my phone once a year at full subsidy. The price:

52 bucks. lol. It's a corp plan someone hooked me up with.

When I worked at Best Buy Mobile I had a Sprint plan with 500 minutes and unlimited everything else for $20/month. They gave us better plans than many of their own employees.

I get all that for $35, but only because I work for Rogers.

I have all this except only 200 mins, and only 4GB data, and no upgrade incentives at all.

I pay $65 a month.

*slits wrist*

Haha incoming minutes. How funny.
It was the great guffaw until incoming texts came. Then the whole thing just became sad.

I hope iPad Mini is revealed, although I wouldn't be surprised if it's saved for another event. Not sure why I'm waiting... I want the 3 with the retina display. But, for some reason, I want to see this first.

I don't really think the beta versions are a good way to judge that, at least with regards to how well the final release copes on older hardware. My iPhone 4 feels much worse on iOS 5 than it ever did with the previous version, and I'm not sure there's anything in 6 that would be worth another speed reduction if they aren't going to bother optimizing it well.

For that matter, does apple prevent you from downloading updates that will cause an app to become incompatible with your device due to not upgrading?

edit: copernicus, you really wrecked this page of the thread
Why wouldn't the beta versions be a good way to judge that?
iOS 6 beta runs smoother than iOS 5 on my iOS devices. Most of the people running iOS 6 beta on iPhone 4 feel the same way.

I recall people saying similar things about iOS5 on the original 4 though. Even on a fresh restore it's not as fast as it was when I bought it. Hopefully that's not the case this time.

I don't think anyone said that. They said Safari was faster, I bet. And even then there were tons of bugs in the early iOS 5 betas, including in Safari.

You pay for incoming texts? holy shit.

Then you choose your "value pack" that includes different collections of should-be-standard features like call display and voice mail!

Have you used it on a 4 regularly (daily) or just a 4S? It's not apparent until I actually have to start using the phone, wheras some things begin to chug.

I sure hope it remains as you say, because as someone who owned a 3G and updated to 4.0 I've always been wary of their optimization on older devices (which should be dead simple for apple, they can count the number of specific devices to update on one hand!)

Whats the relevance to other companies? Stop being so butthurt over people not being blown back by apples iterations that are finely tuned existing technology.

LTE, WiFi direct integration, multi screen size support with a single package, mesh networking, samoled displays, WP 7.8, true black screens, NFC integration.

e: I'm gonna do you a solid, if a mod wants to ban me for the duration of September the 12th, please do it so that paradoxical doesn't have a nervous breakdown when he sees I've made a post in this thread.

Feel free to forward this to you nearest moddership representative for review.

So which of the above fits your definition of "mind blowing"? I asked you a simple question. Is there one of those bullet points specifically that is mind blowing to you, or do all those features which are spread over a myriad of phones somehow combine to form the definition of mind blowing? Having NFC in a phone blows your mind and significantly alters the user experience, even when there is barely any software of retail support? Faster data blows your mind? A bigger screen, really? And stop accusing me of being offended every time I reply to you. I respond to things I think are irrational and explain why I think that way, that doesn't amount of a "nervous breakdown". I'm a believer that people should justify their words, especially when they use those words to attack something. ie bashing the iphone for not having mind blowing updates, then when asked to justify what it is you consider mind blowing, listing random bullet points of things that haven't really changed things in any kind of drastic way.

Yes, I used iOS 5 betas and iOS 5 GM on iPhone 4. The iOS 5 betas were really buggy, I don't see how you saw people claiming iOS 5 beta was running smoother than iOS 4. Safari ran smoother, but was still subject to rendering bugs that required you to remove the app from memory and reopen it to get it working.

If you don't think a .3 update for the Lumia 900 isn't mind blowing, I don't know what to tell you.
