Overall very impressive, and a good example of why the competition between Android and iOS is really healthy - a lot of the changes they've made have been directly inspired by the success of their competition, and I hope Google does the same at i/o at the end of the month.

Awesome stuff! Great time to be a developer or a device user in general, shit is bumping.

As an Android user, I was very impressed, and I want Google to really blow me away as both a developer and a user at i/o.

What I want after seeing this conference -

1. A better tie into my mac or windows desktop.
2. A new/different programming language (I HATE YOU JAVA).
3. That extensibility api - Android can -kind- of do this, but not at this level and not this smoothly, give me a better api.
4. More Google unique stuff (Google Now/Search integration/Google app integration)
5. Surprise me.

Yosemite was a bit of a letdown compared to the changes in iOS 8 and developer features. I was hoping they'd allow all iOS apps to be runnable on Yosemite. Not a feature great for all apps, but it would be useful for some that don't have a native OS X version.

How similar is Swift to Objective-C?

Does it look like it will be a good starting point for a new programmer?

Quite close I think. It'll abstract away some of the more tricky parts (easier pointer references, bit more expressive syntax), but it's still a 'proper' object oriented language. It won't be quite like basic, but if you're willing to put in some effort it'll get you places.

If you're really just starting out I'd recommend getting a good Python book and work your way up from there.

Sweet.

Considering the iPhone 4 already crumbled under the weight of iOS7, I can't think of a reasonable individual that expected it to get iOS8 with all these new features.

Well, I enjoyed watching the event live with you all. Loved all the live reactions and differing opinions. Very enjoyable that the 2 hours went by so fast.

Its still coming . It was delayed till iphone 6 announcement
This I can believe. When the iOS devices all come out in September they'll have more features to show off to take advantage of them. I can see split screen being one of them. Along with the resolution independence for the bigger 6 screens.

Why the fuck would apple replace Objective C, a language that only apple uses, with another made up language that only apple uses?

I know it doesn't make much sense, but look on the bright side FUCK OBJECTIVE C

Technically this was coming since Steve Jobs' death; Objective C was legacy from the NextStep days.

So they made a big point about how all your photos will be in the cloud, but there can also be a local version that's getting constantly updated too, right?

I love objective C, but it's a 30+ year old language and it's legacy tie to be fully C compliant isn't only significant baggage, but it actually holds the language back as well.

It can't live forever and they need to start providing a alternate solution.

iPhone 4 will not be getting ios8.
Not that surprising since it was approachin the edge of usability and it was due to get cutoff support like every previous phone.

I honestly don't think Mac devs will have to flatten their app icons that much actually. Apple's certainly went flatter but the overall design still uses plenty of 3D planes and more shadows and gradients than iOS 7 (look at the Safari icon).
