Applying for jobs is exhausting and soul-crushing

I've got a week or two left in my 2-month web dev contract. I've done nothing for like 75% of it since I got the work done in the first couple of weeks.

So Ive been jobless about two weeks now, which really sucks.

I had a job interview yesterday, with a company that does door to door sales. Now I have a bunch of experience in sales but not neccesarily door to door.

They pay well, not just based on comission either.

The thing is the hours are really going against the way I want to live my life. Basically it would be days where Id first have to travel 30mins by train and walk another 15 minutes.

The days start around 13:00 PM, and are expected to end around 8/8:30 PM.At that point we would drive back to the office from wherever we would be at, and Id have to take a train trip back making it so I wouldnt be home till around 10pm.

This would really wreck any semblence of free time during the week, and make it so I couldnt really see friends during weekdays either.

Tomorrow Im supposed to go with them for a day to see if Id like it but I have major reservarions and dont want to make the wrong choice. I do feel if I call tomorrow and explain Ive thought it over and it interferes with my social life too much, that they would understand but I still feel its a shitty thing to do.

Also I would still need a job. Just something different with more structure.

I emailed the place today that I had put all my hopes into regarding an internship :/ I did it because a) I had found another email adress to them that I hadn't tried (as previous emails seemingly went ignored) and b) because another company wants me to finally sign a work contract.

So that means that I have a job, which is good of course. But I really wanted that internship more than anything in my life at the moment. And after a few hours I got an apologetic response saying that I didn't get the position because I had apparently "slipped through the cracks" and someone else got the spot. I'm not sure what that means exactly, it sounds like someone on their end fucked up and either completely forgot I existed or my test got lost.

I'm not sure what to think or how to feel, to be honest. I sent their test back well in advance before their deadline, and I never hear anything back, not even an auto-response saying they had received the test from me. I probably never would've heard a word if I hadn't sent another email today... That shit stinks real bad :( I did try to get in touch with them a while back but again, no response whatsoever. Only thing I think I can learn from this is to hound them a bit more instead of just sitting on my ass waiting for an email but still, this is fucked up, I don't even know if anyone even looked at my application so I don't know if my results sucked or what. Certainly sounds like I got ghosted.

Fuck.

Edit: It's probably wrong but it certainly feels like I'm entitled to more than a apology. I asked if I would be eligible for their next intern phase but I'll be forced to do another test if that happens. Ice cold.

Easy fam, are you hungry enough?

What I'm worried about is when job descriptions mention certain things that I really have no familiarity with. In my curriculum, I didn't learn any programming nor did I learn about server stuff (like MySQL), which apparently are a big part of GIS as a career. Now that I'm not a student anymore, I feel like it's hard to learn this stuff on my own since the software is expensive and I'm low on time. So, my question to you all is: should I be honest about my lack of experience with employers, should I "fake it till I make it", or should I continue doing even lower level jobs (like internships) until I learn enough about these things to be proficient?

You need to get a feel for how much SQL / programming work is needed before deciding on an approach. If they expect you to actually be coding stuff its going to be very difficult to figure that out while on the job. If its more about being familiar with the language and running scripts that are already written, that can be managed. I'd probably say that I was exposed to SQL in college but don't have much experience actually writing code. If that's not enough for the job you'd probably struggle in it and may want to look elsewhere. Alternatively you could take a bootcamp course and apply later, if thats an option.

At the end of this month it will be two months I was at home, job hunting.
Great news today! Going to new job from May! Yay!

Coffee and Dirt Rally nights ahead!

Hey guys! New to this thread. Just have a small question - I'm planning on specialising in marketing, preferably brand management. Anyone who's majored in business or marketing in particular - how useful are internships in terms of landing full-time offers after graduation? I have one lined up this summer and hopefully the next, before graduation the year after that.

But say with two internships under one's belt, is it fair to say that landing full-time offer at big companies will be fairly easy?

You've only been out of work for two weeks and sales jobs are a dime a dozen, why the push to take this particular one, especially with the shitty schedule? Showing up at random houses at 8 at night trying to sell something is probably get doors slammed in your face and people swearing at you, not sales.

But say with two internships under one's belt, is it fair to say that landing full-time offer at big companies will be fairly easy?

No.

They are useful for developing skills and networks/connections, but in no way are they guarantees to get a job.

It's not the internship that lands you the job. it is specific tasks and training and process knowledge during the internship that get you the next job.

I am in marketing (agency-side, digital platforms leader for large brands) and I have had lots of interns on my team over the years. some are....frankly useless. But I have had a few where they see this is a chance to learn "how it works" and attach themselves to processes and teams so they can build specific, measurable facts for their resume. That is what gets you a job out of an internship....specific experiences

So, go into the internship with building your resume or linkedin profile in mind. ASK to join on projects, be a fly on the wall in project meetings, if you see someone using a platform or process, ASK to learn it. Everyone is busy, you have to ask.

You want to come out of the internship with "I assisted in planning, implementation, and analysis on XXXXX project, which resulted in a XXXXXXX results for our customer" or "trained on and used XXXXXX platform to engage definied market across XXXXX channels with a positive return for XXXXX" or "Member of project team to drive XXXXX results for XXXXXX. Was responsible for XXXXX task resulting in XXXXXX outcome".

Don't put:

JOB EXPERIENCE
-Intern, XXXX Company

Learn specific processes, learn specific approaches.

Also, if you can, from a guy in Digital Marketing side...find those digital teams and learn what they are using. Google AdWords/Doublclick etc, Google Analytics, and Marketing Automation or ESP platforms, Measurement methodology. Learn to speak their language.

Depends on how much you like to hustle. If your down for busting your ass for 8+ hours to make ok money go for it. Otherwise sales jobs are a dime a dozen and there are fair better ones than d2d

Sounds great, thanks for all the advice! Yeah, I've been told that employers prefer reading about the results you yielded at a position instead of the menial job duties you did on a day-to-day basis.

I'm not in digital marketing though, it's more strategic marketing, market analytics, and brand management I'm dabbling in. It's a cigarette company, so hopefully that differentiates me from other candidates who have had internships at typical CPGs like Proctor & Gamble, Pepsico, etc., though I am planning to land jobs there next summer.

Thanks for everything!

At this point I might just go full time into uTest and We-are-testers (just applied) and become a professional freelance QA tester... Given that I used to have a QA job, I already know what to expect and didn't exactly hate it but eeehhhh

I've made only $30 on utest so far while I've been applying to other jobs but my concern is that even if I do go full time, it's never guaranteed how much I would make each week :/

I also have no experience with automated testing, it's the one major QA skill I lack. Anybody here have experience with it or should I not worry about it too much and prioritize jobs wanting manual testing? I guess I could self-teach myself but my programming skills are very basic.

Had my first job interview in 15 years today, 2 even with different persons.

While I'm happy that I was pretty calm and relaxed at the time and some of what I said was acknowledged as 'good', I'm now at home and thought of at least 10-20 other things I could have or should have said too.

Guess that is pretty normal right? ;)

Anyway I would be one lucky bastard if this would turn out into a new job already, but I really have no clue yet. There were a lot of other candidates I think (looking at the name plates on a desk) but I probably am the most experienced one as it was said I was the oldest candidate they asked to come.

Oh well, I'll see how it goes.

I can now personally attest that staying at a job with company you've grown to despise and not having a safe out is equally soul crushing. I'm at my wit's end and I have no idea what to do. Everyday I want to quit but I don't have anything else lined up yet. Two of my co-workers are in the same boat. We're all starting to crack.

Just over 5 months of unemployment after being shown the door at an IT services company
60+ applications through god-awful online HR systems
12 phone interviews
6 on-site interviews
Hundreds of emails, calls, and meetings with my network and leads
1 job offer accepted with the salary I requested

My takeaways:
My network was my lifeline. I always had a steady stream of leads at any given time.
An internal reference is the best thing you can get.
LinkedIn is a valuable resource for working your network, getting contacts within companies, researching companies, and job postings.
Your soul will be crushed, but use it as an opportunity to gather feedback, honestly evaluate yourself, and reshape your life.
Unemployment is the worst job. It requires you to be on call at all times, pays nothing, and quitting is not an option.

So it seems I'll be starting May 2nd now. Or at least, that's the plan. I think I'm going to start up as a Level 1 tech, but then move up to the Level 2/3 when it shows up. This whole thing is just fucking wild. Hell, when I start, it's about a month since when I was first "supposed" to go in.

I was pretty much on the same boat three weeks ago. Now i'm at home broke as fuck.
But at least i got to grow a beard, which is nice.

I'm almost two months into the new IT job. Things are great. No boards or metrics taking on call times. I get up at a decent time and get home an hour earlier than my last job. 10 payed holidays, health care, dental, 401k if I want it, accumulated vacation days. It's a smaller IT department of like 12, so I can get close with people and learn some things. I just passed the Network Plus and plan to get the Security Plus later this year. This is my third IT job. Third time's the charm?

So on Friday, I completed an interview for an entry level IT position at a university. This is the first time I got called for a second interview after the initial interview. After about 45 minutes, when I said I had no more questions, the two interviewees said the formal part of the interview was over and they just wanted me to talk about myself. We then talked about the best places to eat, video games, Marvel films, typical geek stuff. They then said that that they needed to interview some more candidates and that they'd let me know their decision by the end of next week. By the way the interview ended, that would be a good sign I could get the position, right?

Nope.

Sadly, it's not that clear cut. I've had hiring managers adore me in person only to get a rejection email.

Just keep applying until you get an offer. Follow up after a week.

I agree, but I did just get a job in which the 2nd interview was very laid back with what video games I play, what sports teams I like, etc. Getting a 2nd interview is good. Since I've been hired, I've seen 3 or so people not get a 2nd interview.

Has anyone had to take a lengthy technical test for a low-paid (minimum wage) internship position before? I have one coming up and I was wondering if it's a normal thing.

Also, would really appreciate anyone's insight into the pros/cons of working at a startup. I've never even considered it before, but it sounds like I'd be a good fit with this company's culture.

A little while back I got a text from someone saying that she needs a caregiver for her boss's dog. I have a profile on care and she sent me her boss's email.

I told her that I wasn't comfortable giving her that information until I met her in person and said I'd be looking to meet her on the 24th. A few days before the 24 I didn't hear from her so I sent her another email, but still no response. I sort of expected from the jump that there was something funny about this because that's a lot of money just to take care of some dogs 3 days out of the week. Do y'all think that it was an elaborate hoax too?

The terrible grammar and multiple misspelled words are a big red flag for me, especially for someone that's supposedly a manager at a research company. That whole email reads like someone put it through Google Translate. None of the times/duties makes any sense. Dogs need to be walked every day, sometimes multiple times a day, not just once a week. But even if you are doing it once a day and feeding, washing, etc, 12 hours a weeks seems like a lot. Smells like a phishing scam to me.

Seems like hoax material. Never trust a deal that's too good to be true, especially from random e-mails.

I might be leaving my current job soon for another. What's the proper way of resigning, written is nice, but is it necessary?

That's how I did it.

Anyone know of the best "quick apply" sites out there? I'm tired of constantly registering and imputing all of my information for every job ad. I don't know if applying in bulk is the way to go, but logic dictates that applying for 100 jobs a day is better than 10.

LinkedIn, Indeed, CareerBuilder.

Not all of the postings support it, though.

In writing is generally considered standard, usually an email to your manager will suffice. It doesn't have to be anything big, just something like "This is to formally inform you that May 15 2016 will be my last day working at Company X."

To piggyback off this, did you tell your manager you've accepted another job in person?

That should come first.

I never written anything down and just told my manager, but I only worked at shitty jobs anyway and since you're asking it's probably a good one so in that case maybe writing is better.

I knew about Indeed and CareerBuilder, but how does it work on LinkedIn?

I've been curious what has been the most efficient way to find jobs on LinkedIn.

I usually follow target companies based on industry.

There is a job tab on the site and you search for openings there. The awesome thing about LinkedIn is that is shows who posted the job. If you get the free subscription trial, you can email recruiters directly.

I have an Internship lined up but I started applying for full-time jobs. The best part about my past Internship, is that it looks great on the resume.

I had a phone screening today that went pretty well, I think. The guy said he was going to schedule another one with the head tech-guy, which I am nervous about.

Software guy here so the interview process is a little intimidating.

Tell you what, some of the projects I did outside of the class have helped. I was asked like 5-10 questions about the Android application I co-developed.

I have not. I thought that was the purpose of the resignation letter.

Have something in writing. They'll need it, but I would set up a meeting with your manager. Do you have one on ones?

Moreover, what industry is this and what's your level? Fast food is different than working in an office as senior manager, for example.

Write the letter, but just find some one on one time with your direct boss and let them know. You may not even need the letter.

Resignation protocol are usually a courtesy to help the company time train and start thinking of replacements. It also helps keep the relationship cordial with your former employer. Moreover, it gives employer time to gather loaned items, equipment, revoke access and conduct exit interviews.

Indeed is pretty good, craigslist especially. Usually for craigslist I email them from the reply button on top and let them know that I am interested and send them a resume. just make sure to pay attention to what they want from you e.g resume, cover letter, portfolio, etc
