Applying for jobs is exhausting and soul-crushing

I applied to my first job ever a few days ago (Wendy's) and today I found out the hiring manager reviewed the applications. How long should I wait for them to get back to me? Or should I just keep calling?

Yes, keep calling. I'm sure you will bug them into hiring you 😉

Chill out, apply to other jobs, and give it a week. Then maybe inquire if they've made a decision yet.

Forget you ever apply to jobs as soon as the application is done. Apply to the next one. Repeat. Review a week later.

Do not take one application at a time. Flood the market.

Well everyone should realize that after the first two. All of them read the same so it's pretty obvious.

Do y'all ever feel sometimes that it's pointless applying for jobs? All this time i just get rejection after rejection and constantly seeing shit I don't have experience in and apply anyway. Went through hoops to get to interviews for them to ask me something I know wouldn't get the job if I said no when they could've put that in the application online and I wouldn't have bothered.

I just feel really trapped sometimes like I'm never going to get out of my situation.

I lost my job three months ago, was nearly homeless shortly after, and had to turn down a job offer that I was excited to get because I had to move. Now, I'm being kicked out of my brother's house because I haven't been able to find a job in the 2.5 months I've been here. The kicker is that he told me that "we could've worked something out" with regards to the job offer I had and the transportation I needed, but that was not his tone or reflective at all of his disposition towards the job when I turned it down.

Now he's told me that I have two weeks to leave due to "not holding up my end of the bargain." In short, he doesn't trust me or understand how hard it's been for me to find work at all. I'm over-qualified for everything I'm finding(in food service, which is where I want to be). Even the hiring manager I interviewed with for the job I was offered commented on it. I've been unemployed for a long stretch once before, but now I'm facing homelessness for the second time in just a few months and finding work before then feels more like luck than anything else at this point.

I can't stop thinking about the offer I had to turn down. I know that having an offer in the first place should be making me more hopeful for more, but knowing that I was so close to having a stable job that I actually wanted when I've instead been going through hell for months now(and it's possible that it's about to get much, much worse) makes me feel sick.

I have a question for those that may be in the industry or has any knowledge. Since I'm really good at sales, I was wondering if there are any aerospace/defense private industries where they have sales reps. I hear they can make really good money.

I've applied to some medical device sales positions, but also looking into the above.

thanks

EDIT-To be more specific, sales industries that sells parts/components to defense contractors.

Just a heads up regarding when companies reply to your application or when you had a face to face interview and meeting,

If you think companies actually take the time and write replies and emails like the one im copy pasting below you are wrong. They do not care about you at all. The reality is that messages like the ones below are just a smart marketing trick, where the company ultimatley wants you to think good about them. Even though you did not get the job/offer.

Until the company actually has made a concrete offer for YOU, that company deserves as little attention and brain thinking as possible. I did the exact opposite when i was applying for jobs a few years back, and it only did more harm than good from my experience.

Thoughts that usually where present whole days for me:

- What if they call?
- What if i get that mail?
- I must check my mail at least 10 times/day so i dont miss their mail IF they mail me?
- I want to be ready for them, not for several companies, hey im loyal!

Its extremely easy when you are desperate to think and rationalize that the company liked you and that you where close in moving forward with them.

"Hi Daante,

I wanted to get back to you regarding your resume. I reviewed your resume with the team and it doesn't look like it is going to be a perfect fit for what they are looking for today. However, your background is very strong and we would like to stay in touch with you for future opportunities.

We will reach out should the role requirements change or a new position (more suitable) becomes available.

There are many places for you to consider leveraging your talent and experience. We thank you for your interest in xxxxxx.

Best", xxxx

Bro, I think you should come down off the ledge. You're right, they really don't care about you, but honestly why would they? Don't take it personal because the entire exchange is entirely impersonal.

Okay, you may have seen this in my other thread, but I thought I'd ask here too.

I'm getting really mixed reviews from Glassdoor on the company that I'm going to be interviewed for tomorrow.

Also, it's business to business, which many reviewers derogatorily refer to as 'door to door' and say it's pretty soul crushing. Is it? I've never heard how people respond to business to business models.

What do you do? What kind of jobs are you looking for? Maybe it's time to pivot or start your own venture?

Look, go to the interview and see what they say. Don't bring up the Glassdoor stuff, but it does sound like you've got questions and they've got answers. The best you can do is go in and get answers, then decide from there.

It's sales, you will either love it or hate it. There really is no middle ground. If you don't have (or aren't given) a book of contacts you're going to be doing cold calls for hours on end, which is the "soul crushing" part.

Which honestly weeds out people who are willing to do hard work vs not.

I pray for you. I remember when my mom threatened to throw me out the house if I didn't find a job, so I had no choice, but to reapply to my old hated job.

I'm a package handler. I'm trying to find any job right now where I don't have to do manual labor and preferably no retail or fast food. I already hurt myself twice on this job. I always wanted to start my own business, but you got to have money to make money and being a package handler you don't make shit.

Have you tried applying/registering with temp agencies? That's how I transitioned out of retail warehousing, because I was running into a situation like you where I had the skills but no experience. The work isn't usually great, but (at least to me) a slack data entry job is better than busting your ass loading trucks for 10-12 hours a shift and it adds something to your resume. Just take anything about "temp to hire" with a huge grain of salt and continue to look for jobs.

Yeah, I was a part of three temp agencies before. One never found me one. The other I did a warehouse job and the third one did some fuck shit like gave me a job, but didn't tell me it was only for one day and then every time I came into their office they always asked if I actually applied there and kept losing my stuff. I was trying to get teaching positions through them, but after all that I said fuck it and my uncle last year/earlier this year suggested I try substitute teacher jobs or teaching assistant and told him about the temp agency, but he said fuck that just go through the school system, but when I looked on their website I do have to go through with that temp agency.

Got rejected for what was easily the highest paying job I've ever applied to, a guy I know works there and referred me. Their application takes forever because their application is quite unconventional. The interview even went great, because it was through webcam and some glitchiness they wanted another, in total I spent about 100 minutes in the interview. Then they just throw me out.

I'm lost as to how I didn't move on to round two, I have just about the same qualifications as my buddy who does work there. Overall I'm just frustrated I spent so long for this one job for nothing.

Not necessarily. What are your skills besides package handling? Can you get some education in another field? Plenty of resources online, community college, etc.

Got a job offer at a long-term care facility 2 weeks after graduating as a practical nurse. They're paying $18.03/hr plus a $1 shift differential on the weekdays (7-11) and $19.03/hr plus a $3 shift differential on the weekends (also 7-11). Pretty decent for a new nurse with no experience 😊 (and I'm making more than double my hourly wage just a year ago). I'm in the Metro Atlanta area by the way.

ooo. I knew you were mad. I know I'd be. I was on the verge of being homeless too because my mother threatened to kick me out if I didn't find one so I had no choice but to go back to my old job as a package handler. I knew they wouldn't turn me down there because they take anybody.

I went to school in what's basically filmmaking so I know how to shoot and edit film, but it's been 2 years since I've been able to shoot anything. I'm also an avid writer. I write articles and mostly creative writing, but it's hard to get paid for writing. I draw too and been trying to get commissions for years, but most people aren't serious when they ask for your business. I'm lucky to get one commission a year. I was considering going back to school, but I don't want to come out and still not find a job. I'd be really hot if that happened.

I looked into going into one of the top ten art schools in the country, but I don't meet their gpa requirements.

How long is long enough to stay with a company before leaving for it to look OK on a resume?

In the tech industry it seems pretty acceptable to job hop every 3 years or so. I a lot of really impressive LinkedIn profiles where SEs work a project for a couple years then leave for new challenges.

I spent a summer doing something along those lines. It really comes down to what your selling, and if the commission split is any good. Its a great place to learn sales, but very few last more than a few month. Stay on your toes at the inteview, as these guys are some of the best bullshitters you've ever met. Some of the stuff we told people coming into interviews was crazy.

Because I don't have a camera.

Create a portfolio with films, I am not sure how that industry works but I am guessing people have portfolios with their work for samples. In my field which is design we have portfolios so people can see samples, I am guessing it is that way for the film industry too? I know there are other industries with portfolios such as modeling, etc. I find this is the best way to give anyone a chance with little to no experience since there is something to show.

Ugh. The anxiety is killing me. Been 2-3 weeks since I had two interviews for the same agency (different field offices). The job can be my stepping stone for my career.

Uhh unless you have a good amount of money saved up that you're willing to blow through, I'd recommend against this. Sure it can work out, but the last position you want to be in is in a new place with no money and no job.

I did. Moved to New York and goofed off for a few months before a recruiter found a job for me.

I don't know how it is in the US but you literally have a (trade school) degree for everything these days. Many jobs that would normally be for those without degrees now has a degree requirement because of this. Maybe I'm just stupid and this has always been the case, idk.

Good thing is that I put some extra applications out today and that this job hunting thing helps improving my application skills and online visibility for employers. Still need to register at a temp. agency, gonna do that tomorrow.

I'd e-mail them and ask what's up. Good luck either way though!

Well, I have an interview at Franklin Templeton for a sales associate position tomorrow. Things have gotten bad with my living situation, and I'm currently living with my father, who I don't like, and his place is so small and dirty. It's a living nightmare. On top of that, looks like my AC in my car has finally kicked the bucket. Not good especially in summer Florida.

Pay seems pretty good, and it's a very good company. I'll bust my ass off working my way up.

I'm in the same spot right now. Great impression with the interview and people there but just waiting... waiting... waiting...

I'll likely follow up with them tomorrow to give them the first day and half of the week to let them work but I usually follow up once per week.

Have cold applied a few other places too but I know those never amount to anything. You need connections and if you have absolutely nothing you need those agencies to help you out.

The job I interviewed for a few weeks ago just called me, and I got another interview, man, this process is long, in total it seems that it would take 5 different interviews. What's the most number of interviews you guys had for a single offer?

I had 6 but that was for a law enforcement position so it was expected.

Had a phone interview today. We quickly established that I wasn't right for the role.

However, I'm meeting with the HR guy I interviewed with and his coworker tomorrow for coffee to discuss "other possibilities".

No idea what any of this means.

Alright. So Wendy's says they're in the process of setting up interviews because they just finished reviewing applications.
How long am I expected to wait if they call me?

I work at Best Buy and I was checking some other locations reviews because I'm weird and do shit like that, I just found a "Do you know who I am" type review lol.

Quite time sensitive.

I'm in the interview process for a near-enough dream job. I passed the application process but then was asked to answer 3 questions for them for the second round.

I answered the questions and at the end of the email I wrote "Would you be able to confirm when you have received my answers?" That was about 36 hours ago.

It is one hour to the deadline and I haven't been contacted. If there's any HR people out there, is that normal that they'd just ignore my request?

Now this is so sudden.

I got an offer, they didn't even had a technical interview, they just showed my CV to the client, the client said yup, good enough and bam, I got an offer

Problem is they wanted me to start next monday, so, I would need to call my current boss and say: "hey boss! guess what? this friday is my last day, see ya!"

That sounds really sudden, but I really, really, really need the money(the pay is almost 2.5X times my current pay) and this is an operator job, and they have enough operators to run things.

Funny thing is, my contract expires in two weeks, I hope they hold and let me finish my contract

But yay, I got a new job!

*edit: and now I'm a member? This day is getting better!

I finally got a job! after 7? months and around 4 failed interviews I landed a dream job in one of the best places in the country. Just wanted to say to those that are still looking to keep at it and keep trying, even if getting rejected is beyond disheartening you wont get anywhere unless you keep pushing forward!

Man I really feel like im getting back into a corner. I'm always missing one thing that I have self-taught experience in but not enterprise. I was hoping to get back into Tech Consulting or Software Engineer in Test but doesnt look like it. Feels bad GAF
