Applying for jobs is exhausting and soul-crushing

That's the thing. I do fine during practice, it's only during the real deal that I act wonky. I wasn't always like this, but it's just my mind is placing way to much importance on these interviews after a string of rejections.

Man, that's tough. It's genuinely hard to relax when you're under a microscope like that.

Is there some technique you can devise to aid you in keeping on track? I envisioned something like a rubber band around your wrist you could slowly pull to indicate time passing. When it got tight that might serve as a signal to stop. Or maybe slowly raising your foot?

I have no idea. Google seems to have a thing or two on dealing with nerves during an interview.

I'm looking through my contacts and asking for favors to get a temporary related job (like bookkeeping), so I can sidestep the whole interview process. Having some stability should calm my nerves for future interviews (I write theses for payment atm). Though, I'm not sure if anyone has place for me or is willing to do me a favor.

I was looking for a job for 6 months after I graduated from college. Had many interviews. Indeed it was soul crushing. Then I got a job that pays well. Now I'm happy. I love my job. Just hang in there, be patient, keep looking.

Can relate to this. Same thing happened to me. Crazy how things can change so quickly for the better.

Think I blew an interview yesterday for an amazing new career. Got through the first two interviews there, but the final one with the VP was a mess. Cracked a joke about the interview process I thought he would find amusing, but got a cold stare out of it. Then proceeded to stumble over my words and the whole thing unraveled on me. I think. Maybe being overly critical. I should find out later this week. It was a pretty competitive position.

Couldn't sleep and still kicking myself. Ugh.

This is a severe problem for me as well, and the best interviews I've done have been after a pint. I can afford to think a bit slower, but I sure as hell can't afford to seem more awkward than I already am.

Has anyone else found this to be helpful? I know it's not for everyone.

I wonder. It might be worth a shot.

So I had my interview for an Audit position at a big 4 today. It didn't start well and I was quite nervous. Couldn't really answer some of there questions and articulated badly. Audit isn't my field of expertise and it did show, even though I have gained some work experience there.
The interview went on quite long though, so I guess they are at least still interested. Why would they spent time with someone that they don't want? Was invited to coffe later by one of the partners who didn't interview me. Overall, I spent nearly 2 and a half hours there.

When I asked how many other applicants are there, the partner said not many and told me to recommend them if I knew someone. The partner didn't study accounting too so I guess he could empathize with me. He also asked if I could theoretically start right away if I would only visit clients abroad, where I would need to stay in hotels.

So overall, I am quite happy right now. Seemed to go well and even though Audit isn't my favorite field of work, it is still ok. Will know in about 7 days. Wish me luck guys.

Almost had a heart attack when I saw unpaid and big 4 but then I see you're located overseas. Phew.

I am but my internship was in Asia. It's quite common there though.

Fuck screwed up another interview. This shit is becoming a complex for me. She basically said I had the right qualifications and seemed very intelligent, but I was chaotic in the conversation. My damn career is fucking dependent on my shitty interviewing skills. I do practice, but it doesn't mean shit for the real deal. I used to be better at this, but the constant rejection is getting to me.

I feel you man. Up until the last few months, I was acing every single interview in my life, whether for internships, part-time work or full-time roles.

Getting slapped with 2nd places since the summer has taken its toll. I'm always losing out to internal candidates, and the interviewers are telling me that I interviewed well, so objectively speaking, I feel pretty sure it couldn't have been helped and internal was going to win anyway. But I can't shake the feeling that I could have done better anyway. The string of No's is shaking me hard. Not in a great mental place heading into the holidays.

I'm really tired of hustling it with 3 part-time/short-contract gigs with erratic hours and low pay, while my fellow grads are building their futures with one, stable, 9-5ish full time job.

So grateful for my partner at this point in my life. Don't be afraid to lean on loved ones if they're offering you support. Nothing shameful in it, as long as you never take them for granted and do everything you can to return the love by making their lives better.

We're in this together man. Just have to keep trying and all it takes is one offer to change it all around. When it happens it makes everything worthy and that much better.

Yeah, it stings living from gig to gig. Hopefully it all turns around soon.

Yeah, I'm not depressed or anything which is probably due to the support I get from friends and family. I just feel powerless at times.

About to head off for a job interview for a job I don't really want with a recruitment agency for a bank. 4 days a week/40 hour week/night shift. Recruitment agencies are the worst...

I kind of want the company I mentioned last week to contact me. Hopefully I hear from them by the end of the week.

But I'll do my best here!

EDIT: I'm back. Don't you just love it when job description changes at the interview. From $29 /h to $23 /h, from working 4 days to working 6 days, from night to day.

I wonder if being out of state is a major legitimate issue with losing out on jobs. I've seen a couple specialized jobs that state "local candidates only" which is hard to believe there would be a large enough candidate pool outside of large cities.

Recruiters will all claim location is not an big issue in hiring but I wonder about the truth of that. No wonder we might be getting rejected if they read the address at the top of the resume and chuck it without even looking at it.

Hey, at least it went to day!

Though maybe you were looking for night time. Sucks, but at least it's still decent pay if you have nothing else.

Me, I'm stuck in the administrative limbo of 4 interesting prospects. 2 government jobs I will jump on ASAP and another job with a non-profit. What can I say, I like non-profits, even though it's probably the less secure type of "permanent" jobs there is.

All supposed to hear some news from by the end of the month. I think I might just try to enjoy life till 2015. Jobs offers are getting scarce in Christmas time.

Just make me sad I won't be able to give any gifts this year. Well I'll bake cookies for all,but still.

One thing that is always on the back of my mind, though, is references. The government jobs needed 3 of these, which I happily gave. I asked these people if it was okay. They said it was.

But what if they end up being backstabbing bitches? >_> Did it ever happen to anyone?

I have often found that interviews will only go as well as the person giving them.

Applied for a bartender position at a new place further away from where I work from an ad on Craigslist that said it was looking for a new bartender.

Turns out it was a scam and was actually an MLM company. Fucking unbelievable.

I really need help revising/rewording these thoughts in the Skills section of my resume. This is for a business analyst position in a different department at the IT company I already work for.

Skilled in communication across various mediums; high critical thinking and problem solving ability; able to create clear and comprehensive documentation; able to build and maintain customer relationships; able to self-manage.
Any advice?

I walked by this place on Monday, got called in for an on the spot interview and was told I would receive a call on that day or Tuesday.

Lo and behold, it's Wednesday and no call, and the manager isn't in and their number isn't up yet (new store). Thursday was supposed to be training.

I don't know what to do and every time this happens while job searching I just feel like there's no purpose to even trying.

Sorry for the rant.

From another thread, I didn't see this one. Honestly I feel like I'm wasting time and delaying the inevitable until my financial aid runs dry...

I definitely felt like it was an issue when I was applying for jobs for a whole year. If it's an entry-level position, no one is probably going to help you relocate and you have to continuously stress that you'll relocate on your own with every interaction. Put it on your cover letter, interviews, email followups, etc. I've applied to jobs where the recruiter made it seem like their were interviewing local candidates for the final step first, and that I would be a backup in case they didn't work out. I've also heard that employers may feel like you'd be less committed to stay if you don't have any family in the area. If you can, lie. Say there's a relative nearby. If you have to and you can, use a friend's address when applying so you seem local, but be prepared to be able to do an in-person interview on short notice if that's the case.

For the job I have now, I didn't end up having to lie about location. I did feel like I got plenty of rejections because of it though. It's tough as hell to land a job these days, and to have something as stupid as where you live get in the way is ridiculous.

I'm no business analyst, so I can't judge if what is written is apt and pertinent to that field, but I would say that if you say you are skilled at whatever on "various platforms"...explicitly state these platforms. Facebook? LinkedIn? Twitter?

Not only it puts concrete stuff on your resume, it also serves you if you ever apply to one of these places that scans resumes for keywords.

I received an email on Monday letting me know that Friday they would contact me with the final decision on which candidate got the position? It has been a long process with 3 interviews. If it was me, wouldn't they have just said on Monday? We never even went over salary negotiation? I was hoping to be super flexible with the salary to have a one up on whoever the competition was.

Received a call yesterday. I got another job offer, which surprised me because I thought the interview went really bad. I suppose it was all in my head. Probably will have to turn it down because of: slightly lower pay, farther location than the job I accepted, and the hours aren't as good as the other one. They do have some pros though: prospect of them paying for graduate school, bigger company, and they're involved with some of the professional organizations I'm associated with. Feels weird turning down an offer cause it's my first time. Wish I can just try both jobs out lol

Whenever possible, try and give accomplishments. Just go through what you listed and try to think of specific things you did at that job, which exemplified whatever you listed.

ex: Instead of saying, "brokered deals", give direct examples of such deals.

Specific examples are great, because they are not only talking points, but they also give a CLEAR message to the reader of what you accomplished.

I have a little story. I'm applying for entry level IT jobs with my CompTia A+ certification. I've been told it's better to contact companies directly than through sites such as monster because your app can sometimes get lost in the filter so to speak. Since there was no direct email listed for this one company I was applying for, I sent my resume and cover letter to the one email address that was on their site for contacting them. This is exactly the email I got from him minus my real name and his.

Can you please explain why you thought it was OK to email your resume to our support staff? This position was not common knowledge in our company and you just sent an email to all of our engineers essentially letting them know there is an open position that none of them knew about. Yikes. Now I have some explaining to do.

On top of that, your resume includes experience at Panera bread… How am I supposed to look at this and think you have any qualifications to do the job that was advertised? You mention nothing about your technical experience or capabilities.

In the future, you want to seek out the hiring manager, not just any email address you come across. I think you would have gotten a lot further if you had just picked up the phone and gave me a call.

Not trying to be a jerk here, just wanted to let you know so that you don’t run into similar issues in the future.

Thanks for your interest in Redacted

I should mention that my resume did have skills listed such as windows, vm machines, etc. He just didn't see them?

At least after that email, I got a positive response from a hiring manager at another company who was a little more helpful and said that while I didn't qualify for the job I applied for, she'd see if there was an entry level IT job for me.

Ouch I can just about imagine the feeling you must have felt when you read that...
All those feels.

But to be honest I think it's great of him to even given you the feedback he did. It would have been easy to just ignore your email.

Been doing assembly for a manufacturing company for the last month as some general work experience towards my engineering degree, but the job is probably ending for me after the end of this year.

Had a job interview today at another place for vacation work, would be involved in doing a big project improving the company's information systems. Think the interview went pretty well, fingers crossed I get it because I think it would be very helpful for my career. Should find out early next week.

Good luck with the job hunting everyone!

I'm fortunate that I've had a much easier job experience than some of you. 10 applications, 4 interviews, 1 job offer (store manager position for a fast-growing company) since I graduated college. I chose not to take the offer because I prefer working at the family business and living with my parents even though I only make less than $20,000 per year. It helps me save money even faster than if I had taken that store manager job and was living on my own.

There is some good advice there. I guess it is difficult to avoid putting non-relevant jobs in a resume when you are looking for an entry-level job, but if you are in a position to pick and choose, I would try to avoid putting jobs that aren't relevant to the position you're applying to.

Just got negative feedback on my interview from Tuesday :(
It wasn't one of my first choices regarding the line of work but the company would have helped my career. Knew my interview wasn't going well in the beginning but to the end, it looked like it might have worked out after all.

Now I have to wait through the holidays for my next one. This time it fits my profile much better. Hope the interview goes better because I was so nervous the last time around.

Maybe I have a different outlook, but I took his response to Panera being on my resume as an attack on me because he was pissed that I leaked that a job position might be opening(probably because they are going to fire someone). I guess I'm just sensitive about that. He does this passive aggressive thing where he attacks me for it, then says "not to be a jerk".

Here was my response to his email and his response back.

Dear Redacted,

I thought it was okay because your website lists that email address as a point of contact on the "About US/Get in Touch" page. Since you were kind enough to give me advice, maybe next time your website can list an email address specific to job postings and or job applications. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Redacted Last Name

Well, yes. That email address is for our customers and potential customers to reach out to us. It was not intended for hiring inquiries.

I will look into adding an HR contact us email address, as well.

I have to say, one of the aspects that is getting to me the most in this job market is the fact that everybody wants experience. For everything.

When even entry-level stuff rejects you because "we opted for a candidate with more experience"...well shit. Once I even applied for an unpaid internship, and I didn't make it because they chose another candidate that had previously done an internship in the domain elsewhere.

So of course, in the meantime, you try to look for random jobs you can do, just to have some money, and you get turned down because "you have too much ambition". Somebody actually told me that. Refreshing honesty, for a change.

Not enough experience for my domain (though I do have some) and too many diplomas for basic stuff. Where does that leave me, except jobless?

So, scratch another prospect off for me...I really, really hope those government jobs (Canada) pan out. Because elsewise, at this point, I think I'm just gonna look for a new scholarship entirely, a technical job, one with like a 99 % hiring rate out of the school, and roll with that.

GAF, I've been looking for work for 2 years now trying to move up and out of my position. And in the last 4 months, I've pretty much been fed up with how my job is treating me. I've been informed I'm pretty much going to lose my job on Monday after all that I've given this small company- including not being paid for things, a reason I've wanted to leave.

The only places that want to hire me are minimum wage part time positions...I just can't afford those. I have a degree I'm paying off, I have bills coming in left and right, and I don't know what to do. The owner is going to make sure I can't claim unemployment either, so I'm at a loss right now of what to do.

And I've done everything I can think of except walk into places with my resume in hand. Over the last 2 years, I assure you I've applied to over 2000 jobs. Craigslist, Careerbuilder, going to a company's website, emailing someone I had contact with that worked there high up, even messaging people on LinkedIn who add me hoping there's SOMETHING out there.

Any advice of what to do right now would be really, really appreciated. Because I really honestly don't know what to do.

If you're getting laid off you'll be able to claim EI, at least, in Canada. I don't think your employer can shut you out of that.

Sign up to some contracting services right now! They usually have a contracting company for every kind of field. At the same time you need to start sending out resumes immedietely. At least with the contracting services its like having extra eyes on the industry looking out for jobs.

I've got a degree in Communication, background in journalism. But I've been working as an office manager for almost 3 years now. The problem is that places want QuickBooks and this company still uses Excel of all things- so I've never learned the program and don't have the money to get certified.

He's done this stuff before. I've had to sign documents for him saying people quit, when he just decided to fire them and not give them any more hours for instance. Basically it sounds like he's going to claim my position is eliminated, offer me a different lower paying position that he knows I don't want and can't really do, in order to get me to either quit or fire me for not doing the job right.

I've done that for 2 years too. My resume is with 3 different ones right now, I just signed up for the third. I don't get calls from them, it's always the same stuff I'm finding. Part time, minimum wage.

Basically it sounds like he's going to claim my position is eliminated, offer me a different lower paying position that he knows I don't want and can't really do, in order to get me to either quit or fire me for not doing the job right.

What a scum bag. How does you getting unemployment effect him?

Anyway, I sort of feel your pain. Have you tried looking at local city jobs? They don't jerk you around as much. Do you have any sort of graphic design/creative experience?

You could start developing your own ideas, meaning, make your own website/blog and update in a way you would like to use communication/journalism. Maybe it doesn't ever get legs or get you money, but above all it will be experience. But what if it does grow and work?

There are also freelance things. Places like thumbtack.com or elance.com

What sort of certification do you want?

But your boss seems like a skumbag asshole. How someone could do that on the week of christmas, I will never understand.

Employers here have to pay out for unemployment if there's a claim, so he doesn't want to pay anyone. And yeah, it's been great watching people turn on him real fast.

Thanks for the idea, but I actually have tried a few websites like that of my own that failed miserably...I ran one in college for 3 years, but thanks to having the laziest volunteer crew around, I wound up closing it down because it was too much of a hassle. And thanks to said crew and me no longer being friends, I've had to pull all of that work too

Freelancing I used to do on the side, but it paid so little and took so much time out of my life I stopped bothering.

I looked into getting QuickBooks certified, much like getting certified for Microsoft stuff. But I don't really want to spend all that money on something that may not even get me a job. I've done that too often.

Overall, I'm really burnt out on this whole situation. I'm messaging people on LinkedIn- recruiters I'm connected to- just to see if there's any openings again. Just seems no one wants to hire full time anymore.

Wasn't granted an interview for a role, due to more experienced candidates applying. Even though I'd done the role already for 8 months and have a glowing reference from a director.

Lol

Situation is completely laughable.

I hear the organization is totally toxic to work for from everyone on the inside these days, so maybe it's for the best.

Had a second person ask me what my desired salary was. Not sure if I went too high or too low. I haven't heard back from either of them. I'm trying to do one application a day, 4 or more on my off days. I have to get out of my current job, I'm sick of this shit.

What did you say for salary out of curiosity? Also one a day is not enough at all man. You should do as much as possible or set multiple hours for applying only to maximize your chances.
