I use FBReader on my GS2. I love how customisable it is. Everything's set up exactly how I want it (font size, line spacing, margins, scrolling style, colours etc.). Every other reader I've tried has had some annoying little thing or other that can't be changed. It has dictionary support too, which I consider to be a requirement for a good reader app.

Browsing your files kind of sucks, though, if you care about that.

Thanks for the recommendation; it's a fantastic piece of software. I've already customized the app with fonts and backgrounds to approximate how text looks in iBooks/Instapaper/Readability, so I'm quite pleased. I keep my olden epub books in a Dropbox folder and import it into FBReader that way. Seems to work well for my purposes.

What's the best app for the London underground?

I'm moving from iPhone and using Tube Deluxe, but struggling to find anything aesthetically pleasing (unfortunately like most android apps I've come across)

Anyone??

After doing some researching, I'm in love with the 4.0 ICS design guide of Holo light and dark apps. Just wish I can find a nice one for the London Underground

At the moment taking the time to possibly start developing the UI myself and getting someone to do the tube.api

I wish Valve would care about the Steam app. It's slow, ugly, low-res and doesn't use holo at all. Like it was made for the G1.

The credit card auth is fucked too. Keeps asking for a state/province even though it's there. You'd think they'd care about that feature.

Works ok if you have steam wallet money though.

Works fine on my S3. A bit slow, but maybe because of sales (just got the phone). And I don't need to change my payment settings as I've done it on my PC so I just click and click and add games that I will probably never play...

Hi guys, I'm looking for a form app for the tablets.

It needs to be able to replicate the current forms that I'm using now(physical paper). With customer's name, address, email, and phone number. And also a field where I can enter in the work that was done and a place where the customer can sign.

Then it needs to be able to email the forms to the customer as well as export them either to pdf or spreadsheet.

It would be great if there was something like that out there.

I'm trying to get this company I work for to get off paper. It's just highly inefficient for me to keep flipping through old paperwork when I need to find a login for a customer or see what I did on their pc the last time I was on it.

It sounds like you need a custom made app.

I'm guessing you are not a dev. I bet it wouldn't be that expensive given that the functionality that you require is kind of simple...

Do you need a custom form every time, or a standard form for all customers?

Check out DoForms and Datadroid Forms.

And can you not make forms in Google Docs, then manage it that way?

If the tablet/phone support stylus, they should have build-in apps that do that. I don't know about sending the email automatically.

For example, with my Note, I can fill out the info with a regular app, one button trigger the doodle function to sign on it. I can immediatedly share it to gmail and send out an screenshot email. However I have to fill out the email add again.

Are there any notes app without online function?

Ijust want a no frills app to make notes or list or to-dos on without it going to the cloud.

Things like ever note and ink pad is what I don't want.

Ink pad is nice but something like that without it uploading my notes to the web.

Try any.do or gtasks. They can sync but don't have to.

So in my never-ending quest to go all-digital, I looked into the situation of digital manga and it actually ain't half-bad. Both Dark Horse and Viz have solutions for web and iOS/Android, and while the market is a bit more fragmented than American comics (of which Comixology covers 95% in my experience), it's much better than I thought it was.

Also, the Viz and Dark Horse apps feel really Holo-ish. Feels good so far, man.

What is the best keyboard for ICS?

I just came from MIUI (the keyboard was blissful).

I need a keyboard that has an Enter button (that let's me jump to the next line), scrollable sign bar (for all of the periods, commas, question marks, etc...), and something that doesn't automatically adds a space after colons.

BIG Launcher has just updated their replacement Android launcher built for the visually impaired. As the name suggests, BIG Launcher provides a bare-bones, high-contrast interface with gigantic icons. Size can be changed, and individual icons can be read out loud through text-to-voice wizardry. Here's the 2.0 changelog for BIG Launcher.

  • sms editor
  • sms forwarding
  • unlimited screens
  • background image on screens
  • buttons can have any icon
  • buttons can link to contact detail
  • big battery and signal icons
  • search in applications list
  • new upgrade dialog with changelog
  • ability to set external dialer application
  • ability to delete call log enteries (optional)
  • battery, signal content description on home header for talkback
  • localized buttons in preferences dialogs
  • safe borders
  • favorite contacts moved to second position in phone menu
  • sent sos sms saved to database

I personally don't think it looks great, but this is something I could see my mother using if she did use a smartphone. So I'm glad something thought of it.

Also, on somewhat OT:

Sparrow Email has been acquired by Google.

Here is TheVerge's review for the iOS app:

http://youtu.be/7gW8iIMcx9w

http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/14/2857268/sparrow-for-iphone-review

There is a lot of swiping going on in the UI, which I think Duarte is a fan off.
These guys are joining the Gmail team and I have no doubt their iOS client will be rebranded as Gmail.
I also expect the Android client to be injected with some of their touches.

Is their a good screen brightness app out there? I really need more customizability than stock, the threshold for increasing the screen brightness is way too low for me, I only want to increase the brightness from low in glaring sunshine.

So I need some help rooting my LG Optimus 2X.

Click on Environment Variables.
Under the "System variable" section, you will look for "Path". Double-click on it.
In the "Variable values" section, add at the very end the location of the tools & package-tools folder, with a semicolon separating these two paths from the rest, e.g. %SystemRoot%;C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools;C:\android-sdk-windows\tools.
The Google USB Driver package only supports select devices out-of-the-box, we will be downloading a modified file that should provide support for all CyanogenMod supported devices:

I've been doing this, and can't freaking understand what that means.

I believe it's the only thing I messed up on, when I try to do the adb devices in the command prompt to see if i installed everything correctly, it doesn't start and says the adb isnt a valid prompt.

I have no idea what's going on.

Also i thought this was the best thread for this, if there's another one, please redirect me.

The Google Voice team is so bad at being in existence.

I just went through setting up two google accounts, and their setup process is so shitty for accounts that have already been set up, like...not recognizing anything going on at all. It's perfect for new accounts, but existing accounts? That shit hung up the lock screen after an OS update...really dudes?

Google, do something about those guys...cause they are definitely phoning in it in.

If all you want to do is access adb/fastboot you can skip that step about variables and shit. I took me ages to realize that. Basically just navigate to wherever you installed the SDK and then to platform-tools directory. That's where ADB/Fasboot resides now.

Its just giving you instructions to add the sdk command line stuff to your path. Easiest way is just traverse to the directory with adb in it and directly run it from there.

Yeah, it's pretty awful. Slowest app on my phone by far, and absolutely terribly designed by ICS/JB standards.

Of the ones I've tried SwiftKey is by far the best. It doesn't have a scrollable "sign bar", but typing such characters is still very quick and easy. There's a trial version of it, you should try it out if you haven't already.

Is there an Android app that lets you scan multiple barcodes and put them all in a document or spreadsheet? We have a whole bunch of PCs arriving this week at my workplace, it would be useful if I can just scan all the barcodes on them (serial number and MAC address for each one) and get them automatically into a spreadsheet using the Android tablet we have.

EDIT: needs to be a free app, also needs to not make the tablet beep loudly until you power it off (I tried the free version of SCANPET but it did this when I scanned a barcode).

So are there no third party keyboards that use Google's own 4.0 voice dictation? Google released the code to implement that last December. They all seem to use either their own or pre 4.0 voice actions.

OK here's some apps I've been using on my Nexus 7. Not all are optimised for tablets yet, but some will be soon (I'll note it if that's the case). In almost every case these apps follow the new Android design guidelines. I've only tried to include apps where the performance (smoothness, responsiveness) matches up to my expectations of a modern Android app. If you like it, let me know and I can maybe add in more. I haven't really included games either! Some of these have free versions available too, so hunt around :)

Safe In Cloud

Awesome Password manager/backup service which uses the cloud sync between your Android Devices. Desktop version coming September 2012. I use it all the time.

Pattrn

Lovely app, great if you like patterned wallpapers.

Timer

Really simple, but beautiful timer.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.laurencedawson.reddit_sync.pro

The best Reddit client on the play store. Dev is super responsive (on Reddit). Currently on version 6, Tablet UI coming in version 8.

Clipper

Great way to manage the Android clipboard. Really useful if you need to copy and paste multiple but separate items.

Reader HD

Great RSS reader. tablet optimised. Has a magazine layout too.

Boid

This isn't yet available to download for the Nexus 7, but the next release will be (in the next few days). Great Twitter client. Still in Beta but unbelievably smooth. Version coming in the next few days will include auto complete of user names, push notifications and lots of other stuff. Tweet caching and a tablet UI should hit within weeks. Makes the official Twitter app look like the pile of crap it is.

Evernote

Evernote. Tablet optimised. Syncs notes in the cloud. Awesome.

Google Translate

Really useful for translating Tweets and the like. You can also use this for web pages in Chrome. Chrome > Share page > choose translate > Bingo. Only seems to work with desktop sites.

Soccer Livescores

Love Soccer? Best football scores app hands down. Notifications for goals scored, can set favourite teams and loads more.

Tasks

Awesome task manager which syncs in the cloud using Google tasks. Great widget , tablet optimised in landscape.

Battery Widget Reborn

Battery Widget(s), super stylish. Tablet optimised.

Dropbox

It's Dropbox. Totally awesome.

Evernote Food

Like Evernote, but for food. For those of you who eat out a lot, or fancy yourselves as chefs.

Guardian Crosswords

It's a Crossword app. But ICS style.

Google Drive

Drive. Alternative to DropBox but with 5GB free storage and syncs with Google Docs. As my work literally lives in Google Docs it's invaluable.

MD.emu

Megadrive emulator. Grab a USB OTG cable for your PS3 controller and you've got the worlds best Megadrive/Genesis emulation device at your fingertips.

Snes9x

See MD.Emu but for Snes. Not available on the play store, but you can download it for free at the Devs website.

IMDB

IMDB. Tablet optimised.

Lobowiki

ICS style Wikipedia browser. Still very early Beta.

DealPad

UK only. Hot UK Deals for your tablet. Looks great.

Notes With task Sync

If you need to take Notes, but want something lighter than Evernote, use this. Syncs in cloud with Google Tasks.

Spotify

The new Spotify Android app is a thing of beauty. Not tablet optimised but works great on the Nexus 7.

Imgur

Post on any kind of forum? You need this app. Notifications are JellyBean optimised!

Folder Sync

Foldersync. Allows you to sync any folder on your phone/tablet with your choice of cloud provider. Works great.

Flipboard

It's Flipboard. Not tablet optimised.

InstaWifi

InstaWifi allows you to share Wi-Fi passwords by NFC or QR code. Makes sharing Wi-Fi passwords a doddle.

Solid Explorer

One of Androids best, if not the best file explorer.

TED Talks

TED talks. Tablet optimised.

Tune In Radio Pro

Tune In Radio Pro. Amazing radio app. Tablet optimised.

Colors

Simple wallpaper app allowing you to set a plain color as your wallpaper.

Foursquare

Foursquare. Not tablet optimised but looks great anyway.

Markers

Tablet optimised sketching app. Simple but elegant.

Movies

Movies. It's not properly optimised for &" yet as the text is wonky in portrait, but it's fine in landscape. Great for checking movie times/theatres etc etc

Trivialist

Awesome trivia app which allows you to challenge your friends. Dev is currently working on optimising for tablet.

Beyondpod

Not totally sold on the UI yet, but probably the best Podcast app on the play store.

Aircalc

Aircalc. One of these floating apps that are better suited to tablets than phones. Try it.

Stick It

Same as aircalc but for videos. Similar to the feature Samsung tout on the S3 which allows you to watch videos whilst web browsing etc

Tablet talk

Hooks up to your android phone so you can send texts from your tablet and receive them instead. Useful when your phone is on charge and you'd rather use your tablet.

Jotterpad HD pro

Another note taking app, with a nice UI

OK that's it for now. There are many, many more that I've missed. If people think it's worthwhile I'll go back and add some more in.

Timer

Really simple, but beautiful timer.

This is quite literally the only nice-looking timer app I've seen for Android. However, I'm a bit hesitant spending that money (although it's not) for something that simple, especially considering that quite a few of the reviews mention issues such as the timer alarm not always going off, etc.

EDIT: Found another nice-looking, Holo-themed one: Icy Time (free). Seems a bit too basic though.

Solid Explorer

One of Androids best, if not the best file explorer.

I currently use ES File Explorer. How is this better, besides looking a bit better? Still doesn't seem to adhere all that much to the Android design guidelines, which is something that annoys me about pretty much every file explorer I've tried.

EDIT: Ok, this one is quite a bit nicer to use than ES File Explorer, although it might not be quite as powerful. But I don't use those "power features" anyway, so whatever! I just want a nice, functional file explorer, and this certainly seems to be one of the best ones so far. I do wish it followed the design guidelines more closely though (it sort of looks like a Holo app at a glance, but it really isn't designed like one).

I really can't wait until Boid devs finally implement Push options as it's the only thing that ties me to the official Twitter app. I'm so used to receiving mentions and DM notifications in absolute real time than anything else feels like an inferior experience, no matter how much good stuff those apps do.

Isn't this an issue with twitter more than the app developers. I might be wrong, but last I remember, twitter hasn't opened up a push notification Api to Developers.

Well, Boid already uses the C2DM permission, and the push notification options are already in its settings menu, just greyed out so I guess they're testing it and will update soon.
