Are there "dead genres"?

Do you think there are "dead genres"?

  • Yes. I think certain genres have essentially reached a creative endpoint.

  • No. I think most / all genres can still be added to in meaningful ways.

Genres die all the time, it's the hundred or so die hard fans that refuse to let some go which make it feel alive. Unreal and arena shooters in general are kinda dead, but enthusiastic players make the genre seem 100% well off, with nary a hiccup. Enthusiasm is a poor substitute for acceptance, but here we are defending almost every hit genre of gaming from the 2000's with very little success.

City Simulators, RTS, point and click adventures. The genres aren't completely dead but are on life support.

Arcade racers are almost non-existant nowadays. Obviously I miss rail shooters too, although that's mostly about nostalgia for me. The House of the Dead remakes weren't that good.

Randy! your next game is Duke. Publishers and studios must understand there's room for unconditional love in video games, they don't always have to take extreme measures to make contents and please the investors, it's not hard to walk on this path either.

Mmorpgs seem to be a dead genre. I mean the old school EQ1 model without mictrotransactions and Destiny-like action gameplay.

WoW is still producing new content but im sure its playerbase is a far cry from the mid oughties. EQ2 is a dumpster fire and in the grip of private equity.

My point is it died pretty much completely. Even if people who played those games eventually got fed up we still have other gamers and newer generations of them. Look at the toy market - same toys are still sold decades later and no one's complaining they shouldn't exist when we have so many technologically advanced devices. Same with QTE's in games - they still exist and operate on the same rules and no one's planning to take them away.

And I still think that pretending to play with plastic instruments could be a good way to get people interested in playing some real music. I mentioned DJ Hero and I'd love to have a try, but the games are only available for PS3 & 360 so I'd have to get an older console and find some well-maintained used game with that DJ set.
But that's what happens to fads. They disappear.

Music games haven't disappeared tho. They are still being made. Nintendo is releasing a new Rhythm Heaven for example.
