Are you ready for the next generation of consoles?

Ok, 2005 is officially here, and that means the unveiling and release of the Xenon later in the year.

While I enjoy the current crop of games I feel that we have hit the ceiling as far as technology goes. As cool as games like Madden, Halo, Dynasty Warriors, Ratchet and Clank, KOTOR are there really isn't any more room for graphical improvement. All we'll get now is small tweaks and no big breakthroughs. I for one am amped and ready for the next generation of consoles. As I feel all the games we know and love right now will only stagnate from future iterations on the currrent consoles. Does this mean that I'll shy away from buying these sequels if they are only available on Xbox, PS2, or GC? Heck no. But at the same time I'm ready to see where gaming is going to head next gen.

New technology doesn't only offer better graphics. It also improves gameplay. Look at madden as it made the transition from PSONE to PS2. The gameplay got significantly better along with the graphics. Can you imagine a Dynasty Warriors or GTA game next gen? I really salivate at the thought of a next gen Dynasty Warriors game. :D All that extra horsepower to use to add more additions beyoned graphical effects. Next gen hardware is going to be able to take the series to the next level. And this is pretty much the case for all game series. Plus with the introduction of new hardware there is usually a decent barrage of new game series coming out. Something that we really don't even know about right now but will all be talking about come November when we can get our hands on it (For Xenon obviously). Say what you will about this gen, it has been great, but I'm definitely more than ready for the next gen to get here!
 
Nope. Too many great games across all three consoles that i haven't played, not to mention GBA. i just bought a DS and PSP is around the corner. It feels like i'm buying a system every six to eight months, which is the reason i never became a PC gamer.

As an adult gamer, i'd like another year to enjoy what i've got. Please. There's simply too many great games.

Definately looking forward to the next step. I am curious if the apparent fast-track schedule for Xenon is going to affect the quality and quantity of its launch titles, however.

And hell yes on the next evolution in Dynasty Warriors type games. I'm also personally looking forward to 3D RPGs whose worlds/backgrounds have the same level of detail and depth that the old 2D backdrops provided. That may be more of a PC thing, but I think we'll be seeing it on consoles soon enough.

And damnit, they better have online co-op in Halo 3, or they will be hell to pay.
 
No way. I actually wouldn't mind it if there were no releases this year. It would give me time to catch up on the piles of games I have that I haven't played yet.
 
In all honestly, I know Microsoft's intentions and their need to strike first, but I wish they would have dedicated more time to this generation. 2004 was a revival for gaming in my eyes. In years past, I'd go 2-3 weeks without a new games. I was at Gamestop seemingly every damn Tuesday to pick something up. Once a new launch comes, you have to wait till all the ports and uninspired bullshit have come out before developers really start getting a true understanding of the hardware. I don't want to wait till 2007 for something like 2004 to happen again. Nonetheless, I'll be getting all consoles the day they come out, as usual
 
I'm completely happy with the current gen consoles and would be perfectly content playing them until 2007. I just don't see a very big advancement in graphics yet. Sure Doom 3, Half Life 2 and Unreal engine 3 looks good, it's just not enough to justify an upgrade IMO. We don't know what the graphics will be like yet, so I hope I'm proven wrong. I agree with Nintendo on gameplay needing a new dimension. If the gameplay stays the same it doesn't matter how good the graphics are, it will eventually get old and lose it's luster.
 
No, I'm not ready, and I won't be for a while. Next gen, I plan to wait a few years and see what all the systems offer before choosing any of them. I don't want to play the next Halo/Zelda/MGS with more realistic graphics. I want the gameplay to evolve, to be different.

If the Revolution truly is revolutionary, then I suspect that will be my first purchase, but even then it won't be until the systems have amassed a sizeable library and have some budget titles before I commit.
 
Yeah I'm waiting a few years this gen. Probably get an Xbox 2 or PS3 first, then get the Revolution whenever it drops in price like the GC did.
 
I haven't yet even played some of the 2003 games I want to play, so I'm not in a hurry for the next generation. And PAL PS3 and Revolution are most likely not released until 2007.
 
Hell yes I'm ready for the next gen. Dreamcast is 6 years old, and PS2 -the current gen standard- is around 5. I think with GTA:SA, MGS3, and Halo 2 we've seen the best this gen is going to get. I'm anxious to see what devs can do with the added power, particularly (as you said) games like GTA that try to draw huge, active worlds. Just look at the improvement TES: Oblivion is getting over Morrowind. That's just in stills; imagine the upgrades to physics, animation, and AI. :D

I'm still looking forward to Conker, Zelda, and a few others, but come November it's time to move on.

Cause all were seeing is yearly sequels that don't look at that great anymore. Time to bring in the new era.

Plus I think this is Sega's chance to shine and proove all the haters wrong as a 3rd party. Theyre on even ground once thenew era begins-no playing catchup this time around.
 
I just got an Xbox after I gave up on gamecube. I need some time to get bored of it before moving on again(and a price drop :) ).
 
For me this generation was over after Halo 2. It'll take a next gen game to get me as hyped as i was for Halo 2. Not many games that i want in 2005, its basically dead

Next Gen - bring it on!!
 
I don't think I'll be getting the next generation of consoles for quite some time - I've done a bit of math and seen just how much money I've spent in the last 4 years on games...and it's enough to make one seriously consider each and every purchase on their merits, and consider developing patience to combat the typical gamer mindset of "gotta have the latest, greatest game right now!"

I'm severely limiting my gaming budget this year, so there's no room for new consoles.
 
Absolutely ready! Sure this gen's been good to me, but I'm ready for something new. Xenon's gonna be a monster as will PS3 and Revolution, and I can't wait to get my hands on all of em. It seems to me that this gen has reached it's plateau already not only in a graphical sense, but it seems like all the games are nothing but sequels and clones. Not to say it won't happen next gen, but I want to see what these beasts can bring to the table.

Huh? How is Sega playing catchup?
 
Not really, but then I probably won't be buying one at launch as I find it's usually a hardware beta test that ends up costing about $500. The sooner they release the sooner the price drops on the HW, so I suppose in that sense I am ready.
 
i heard a rumour that the Xbox Next (Xbox 2) is being first shown on the 5th of jan and there are going to be 3 types the Xbox Next, Xbox Next HD and then the Xbox Next PC and they are said to be realeased in Fall 05

2005 thus begins the transition to nextgen consoles. the nextgen cycle has ALREADY begun with the introduction of Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. this year will see the unvieling of all the nextgen consoles and the release of the next Xbox most likely.

I agree with MrBob; it's time to see what's next.

I can't wait for the PS3 and Xenon unveilings this year. Fall 2005 for a new console does seem quite early, though. XBOX 2 will be more "early" than the PS3 will be "late."

Because by the time they collected their wits from making the transition from 1st to 3rd party everyone else was 3 steps ahead of them. And quite honestly,why even bother with making sequels to franchises now?

A game like Sega Rally 2005 should not be on the PS2. It would be better suited for the PS3.
 
I personally feel there is no need for 'better graphics' at the moment. Developers should concern themselves more with making original games first.
 
I was just gonna make a topic about how long this generation has been. By the time the Xenon is launched, it'll be 7 years since this gen began. By the time the gen officially ends with the launch of the PS3 (DS, PSP, and Xenon are early comers), it'll have been 8 years. That only ties the NES/Famicom 8-bit era.

Breakdown since the NES:

NES/Famicom 8-bit era (1983-1991)- 8 years
Genesis/SNES 16-bit era (1989-1996)- 7 years
N64/Saturn/PSX 32/64-bit era (1994-2000)- 6 years
DC/GC/Xbox/PS2 era (1998-2006)- 8 years
 
Yeah I think the DC is one reason why this generation feels longer. Those of you who didn't jump on until PS2 or GC or XBox I can see perhaps wanting this gen to continue. But those who hopped on with the DC know this gen has been around for a long time.
 
I'm excited. It's always fascinating to see how much of a big step we will take graphically with the next-gen hardware. The step from last gen was softened with the presence of Dreamcast IMO, acting like a bridge and taking away some of the impact from PS2.

Since there are no "bridges" this time, it will be all the more interesting. Also, I'll add that I do not play PC games much or have a access to a really good PC, so I'm not used to seeing great graphics that way either.

I'm trying to keep my excitement down though, since I was let down with PS2 back then. This time, I'll keep my expectations at a healthy level. Still, I'm looking forward to it a lot...but I won't buy one at launch.

It's funny how the N64 and DC's gap is barely over two years.

The Dreamcast really did make things weird this gen.
 
Personally, i think 2005 is too early for a next generation console. Id rather see a superior console (better specs than xenon) , released in another years time and in the meantime play out the final games for xbox, ps2 and gc.

I was counting the first competitor's console to the introduction of the market leader's console. It was always Sega beginning generations, and then Nintendo and Sony respectively ending them.

This next gen will begin in 2005 with the Xenon, and it'll probably last until the release of the PS4 or Xbox 3. Depending who's in the driver seat at the end of next gen, of course.
 
Just because the Xbox is just about done doesn't mean the rest of this generation is. I still see several big name games to look forward to throughout the all of 2005 on the other systems.

I don't see how the DC can honestly be counted towards the current generation, when the system was released in the middle of last gen and dead before most of this generation ever arrived. The bulk of its games where also ported to or from the PS and N64, with very few that made it to or from the PS2, GCN, or Xbox. The DC was a half-gen system (not belonging to any one gen) like so many other failed systems before it.

As I said in that other Xenon thread, bring it on, I'm not buying one though. Current PC graphics kind of bridge what we'll see I think. Well, atleast that's what I'd expect from Xenon, the ability to run something like doom 3 or Half life 2 at 60 FPS with high details cranked. Admitttadly on TV resolutions but still. If xenon / revolution/ PS3 aren't capable of that atleast , whats the sence in even upgrading at all ?

If Sonic Adventure (one of the very first DC games) came out today on the PS2, I think we'd say it looks average at best (probably poor), but wouldn't doubt it's this gen. Unlike if the best looking N64 or PSX games were to do the same.

With the best looking games (like Shenmue II), it wouldn't even be questioned.

To me, that says that, graphically at least, the DC is part of this gen.

I'll be so disappointed if first gen Xenon games don't look better than those two games. Working on a dedicated system with such power and not attaining much better visuals would be an absolute travesty.
 
I have such a large backlog of games to play I could care less about the next generation right now. The only thing that could change my mind is if the Xbox2 has a Dreamcast like launch with many great games available right off the bat. Then I would have to seriously consider adpoting early.
