Arma 3 Alpha - March 5th - 25 Euros

Does anyone know how you mess about with gun attachments like in the trailers? Or is that not possible? Also is there a paper doll so you can know what stance you are in at the moment?

At least they improved the inventory system. Holy shit that was a mess in DayZ.

I usually just switch to 3rd person view to see what stance I am in.

Either that, or hit X, which I think brings you to the high-crouched stance if you are standing or prone, so I kind of use that to get my bearings back if I don't have time to switch to 3rd person.

is there no boot camp in the alpha?
in one of the early playthroughs they showed of some weapon ranges and people standing around in a camp where you could learn the basics

Nothing like that in the Alpha. The four showcases allow you to play around with a bunch of stuff, but there is almost nothing as far as a tutorial right now.

Boot Camp is most likely on the large map that isn't in the Alpha.

The scroll wheel menu definitely could use some tweaks.
Like when I was in the middle of hostile territory and my teammate dropped down with the chopper taking fire from all sides and I needed to get in fast.
I couldn't accurately choose whether I wanted to be in the co-pilot seat or the back. I kinda just had to pick one and it's difficult in that situation. .
Even if there was a key press while the scroll menu is up that always made you get in driver seat/passenger etc.

I think the easiest solution to that would be scripting it so that the the order in which positions appear is always the same, with the first available slot being at the top of the list, and color coding vehicle/weapon/grenade options.

Also you missed out buddy, we got into Blitzkrieg at the end of the night and it was a fantastic PvP game mode, really showed off the night and day difference between 2 and 3 when it comes to the moving/aiming/shooting feeling like a modern FPS.

Douchebag. Yes, me.

You certainly haven't played this game in any heated situation.

Oh I agree, system isn't perfect, like most complex control systems and a fixed position for certain actions would be a nice addition if people aren't fast on the wheel.

It's just the notion of the UI being almost fundamentally broken I object against because it works fine, just fine and when you've used it for some time you come to really appreciate it.

So those that use mumble, any luck getting the overlay to work?

Also quote this message to see the GAF mumble info that has a lot of us from the Dayz days in it and let's all be in the Best Friends Club.

Is Arma 3 DX11? I don't think the Mumble overlay works with DX11.

I don't know if it's DX11 or not, I guess I wasn't following too closely, but, I think you are right.

Also, is multi-threading working as it should in this? Or is a Pentium 4 overclocked to 5 GHz still the best solution? I feel like I should be getting better performance but this game is def. CPU bound. Get between 20-55fps at any given time regardless of the settings. i7-920@4Ghz/GTX 680/12gb Ram/Win7

Another day, another random Sethos GIF.

Nice, do you fly with a keyboard or joystick? I'm still tweaking my controls.

Random thought, but it'd be funny if some of the people buying it right now on Steam don't actually know what alpha really means, and they think that's actually part of the game title. Like "ARMA III Bravo Edition" or something.
Like the people who bought GTA5 Prologue thinking it was the finished game (friend of mine)

Didn't you actually have to buy the game again? At least with the Steam version you do get upgraded to the full release... right?

EDIT: Bought.

Been playing. Really fun. Feels better than ArmA 2.

Runs pretty smooth in single-player. Runs rugged in the 5-15 FPS range in certain multiplayer situations (Wasteland server got me down to the lowest, at least 30 players in it).

Looks like I'll need to turn some stuff down.

i really need to get into this. built a new PC with this game in mind.

any of these codes in the wild yet?

Nobody got codes yet. probably on the 14th when the alpha lite is available for download.

If you built a pc with arma in mind you might as well go buy the alpha though since multiplayer is where its at.

Well, wait until the implement the Take On physics, then you might convert :p

Us joystick users will be in luck when that happens. It's not TOO bad right now, but it doesn't feel as real as TOH yet. Landing in the Ka-60 is a little rough given the blind spots which was kind of fun considering how extreme the throttle controls are for me right now. It seems like I'm either going full throttle or no throttle right now even with the analogue controls set up so I need to look into it.

I'm eager to see what they do with the flight physics for jets though. Have they talked about that at all? That was probably the weakest area in ArmA 2 for me but I'm a little spoiled with other aviation games I guess. I never expected it to be too complicated, but it sames way too simple compared to everything else in the game and that's going to feel weird compared to the TOH chopper flight models.

I have a feeling I am missing something super simple here, but when in the gunner's seat of either of the two vehicles I cannot go to camera view. No matter what I do I am stuck in the inside view and if I hit Keypad Enter I just get an external view.

I cannot get the gun view no matter what I do and I don't know what I am doing wrong.

I've seen others use the view in videos, so I know it's possible.

It's Numpad 0.

So...I have always admired the Arma games. but found 2 to generally control/feel terrible. Game looks beautiful...is it more fun to actually play this time?

They have always been fun to play. This game really isn't any different so whatever problems you had before are still here.

For what its worth, I myself could never enjoy Arma II. I bought it for DayZ the week DayZ came out and eventually gave the actual game a go. The main problem I had was everything was just clunky and slow. Arma III feels so much more fluid that it makes the game enjoyable and playable for me, everything else from Arma II is still there (Control scheme etc) in-case that is what was bothering you.

So glad I bought this game, had nothing but a blast so far and can't wait for new scenario's and missions! Do we know when the Atlis map will be released yet? Also, I assume theres probably going to be frequent weekly updates since its in Alpha right?

Bought the game and playing it on my i5 duo 2.53 with mobility 5650.
Game looks nice after really customising options, with pretty acceptable FPS in adequate resolution.

But why am I writting - this is my second game in ArmA series - first was Operation Flashpoint.
I am looking for some guide and/or videos that would showcase me what can I do, how to do it and how to be better.

I am at work, so I want to prepare for when I get home.

ed:watching dyslexics movement & shooting tut

I love how Arma 3 still is on steam top sellers. Anyway, someone up to play a little bit of coop later today? Like in 5-6 hours. Me and my buddy aren't smart enough to outplay enemy all-seeing AI.

I miss 5.56. Don't like 6.5mm.

Don't listen to him. Arma 2's infantry controls were so bad they pushed me almost exclusively towards using vehicles.

Movement is much smoother. I can now enter houses and walk upstairs like it was nothing.

Game actually runs and looks okay on that really low end ATI Mobility Radeon card and that two core laptop i5 system? Holy shit I thought my rig wouldn't have a chance.

I might have to look into it now lol, I though the min reqs would be higher due to how unoptimized the previous Arma 2 was with even high end rigs.

I was skeptic too, but here I am, haha. I never played Arma 2 and heard alot of its performance issues.

I wanted to mainly support my coutry's own BIS. Aw yiss.

ed: When I'll be at home, I will put on some screen into the performance thread - but please, take this thing into consideration - I've ran just throught the single military stuff and not more yestreday at night!
I will play it more today so I will surely customize the setting even more.
