Question for (primarily) Nintendo gamers:

With the next-gen console wars currently raging across the internet, do you wish Nintendo was in the mix too, or are you happy to be out of it?

Ever since the Wii, Nintendo has tended to dance to its own tune, eschewing any direct head-to-head competition with Playstation and Xbox. Are you getting jealous of the next-gen hype and excitement? Do you wish you were arguing terraflops and SSD transfer speeds with the rest of them? Do you wish there was a 4K Mario/Zelda with raytracing preparing to face up to the likes of Halo infinite and HZD2? Would you love to be creating memes and watching Digital Foundry tech videos about the latest Nintendo powerhouse?

Then again, maybe you are looking at the console war threads, shaking your head and then getting back to playing Animal Crossing.

I would like to have a strong stationary Nintendo console. That would be my only console. I don't care about Sony's walking sims and for MS games i have a Pc.

Definitely. They were doing it since 1983 for me. I'd like to see them fighting on all fronts, not just portable.

'but its mobile! :messenger_beaming:

In all seriousness, i doubt they care. Graphics seem to be the last thing Nintendo fans worry about with a console.

Mind you that's not by choice, and yes there's a difference. They were a very important factor until the option was no longer on the table.

I am almost completely oblivious to the console wars. I only became aware that the next generation was coming out a few weeks ago. I didn't even scan the thread titles. Only when brap brap got banned did I notice.

Urgh that N64 poster, thank god Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo dont really do that kind of stuff anymore. cringe.

I really don't care. All the power in the world couldn't make Uncharted 4 and Gears of War 5 fun. I've barely used my other consoles since Switch launched.

Console wars are so meaningless these days, that I cannot even fathom why anybody would be engaged in them.
It was something of its time, something that might even be considered legitimate, but these days it is laughable at best.

Mind you that's not by choice, and yes there's a difference. They were a very important factor until the option was no longer on the table.

I came across this article about the reveal of the Gamecube while searching for a hype picture:

"In my experience, there have often been theoretical claims of high performance for game hardware, and although people were very impressed by the figures, the actual products haven't even delivered one-tenth of the claims," said Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's premier game developer. "It is a given that the Nintendo GameCube will offer better graphics and higher quality sound, but more importantly it will allow developers the freedom to concentrate on creativity without worrying about technical limitations."
"For several years, virtually every advance in our industry has focused solely on improving the 'look' of games. While our new Nintendo GameCube and Game Boy Advance not only will create the best looking games, more importantly, they will transform how players think about interactivity," explained Minoru Arakawa, president, Nintendo of America.

So to be fair to them, it seems that they did start to drift away somewhat from the cutting edge "more and more power" mode of thinking even when launching the Gamecube (which could more than hold it's own technically against the competition). On the other hand, Miyamoto's comment at the end there could be used as an argument for more powerful hardware. You could say that the Switch's relatively weak hardware doesn't "allow developers the freedom to concentrate on creativity without worrying about technical limitations".

I just miss having great games to play on the Switch. If youre not a massive fan of Animal Crossing, what is there to look forward to on the Switch?
As in going forward, not looking at backlog as Ive played the games Ive wanted to.

I haven't been all that excited about graphics in a while. As long as the games look good I don't really care. Whether the PS5 or XSX is more powerful doesn't really matter to me, because I don't believe the visual upgrade will blow me away like it did back when I first played the N64, or the Xbox. It's ultimately going to be, this console has a better framerate, or resolution, but that's about it. The games aren't going to look drastically different, in my opinion.
I'm playing Animal Crossing on the Switch. I think it looks pretty good. Even if the Switch was a 10tflop console, I can't imagine the game looking significantly different.
I wouldn't call myself a Nintendo fan really, I had an Xbox, Xbox 360 day one, PS3 PS4 Vita, etc. But Nintendo's first party games just interest me a lot more than Sony's or Microsoft's. No offense to anyone, but Uncharted, Forza, etc I just find them all so fucking boring. I'm sure Uncharted 5 will have the most hyper-realistic graphics on the PS5, but the game will probably still be boring as all hell to play.
Anyway no, I don't miss out on the console debates because I don't think either console will particularly impress me, and I will get a PS5 eventually anyway.

I still have and play xbox one X even if I have a few switches in the house. I'm too busy with actual work so don't have time to read up on all the details for these new systems. All I'm hyped about is that they are on the new AMD Zen CPU's so that made me happy.

I'm currently using an AMD 2700X on my PC and it runs pretty well so I'm sure I'll be impressed with the performance both systems put out.

Console wars are for 10 year olds. Buy good games. If you care about which box has MOAR GRAFPHVICKXZ you already lost, and you're the only loser.

Bravely Default 2, Xenoblade, Metroid Prime 4, BotW2, Bayonetta 3, No More Heroes 3, Trials of Mana, and supposedly a bunch of Mario games. I'd wait until a proper Direct before giving in to despair.

I miss Nintendo, and Sega for that matter, not being part of it.

I dont do much Nintendo but the fact I still have a Wii hooked up and ready, DS, and a switch in home qualifies me for the poll.

Is there a next gen debate? What would that "debate" be about? Surely history has shown that the gens roll around, people get all uptight about this and that tech spec, and then Sony "wins" (if winning is based on console sales anyway).

It turns out various tech specs don't make up for having first party studios turning out AAA gaming experiences.

And that latter point is why Ninty remains relevant despite not entering into the console war numbers game every generation.

Just play the games - it doesn't matter where you find them. Your black plastic box won't love you more for warring about it online.

Nah bruh, I'm too busy catching up on the incredible 2019 catalogue of Nintendo games and now Animal Crossing. Graphics and tech are great, but when I'm playing amazing games on the least powerful system, it makes me question a lot of my thirst for bigger, faster, shinier.

Damn, I only just now realized that Nintendo set itself up for an interesting strategy by releasing a console at the halfway point of the established Sony / MS generation: although Nintendo loses the spotlight this year while Sony and MS fight it out, by releasing a new main console in ~2023, Nintendo will have zero competition at that time. In a head to head console-release battle in 2020 with the other two, Nintendo wouldn't get close to being #1 in sales, but by releasing when nothing else is releasing, they get all the attention.

Although I just realized the PS5 Pro and Xbox Series Z will probably release in 2023, so ... :pie_thinking:

And how many of those are due out in the next few months? 1 or 2? If we are lucky.

Nintendo could be in a bit of a tricky situation now with XSX and PS5. I mean lets say Nintendo are making a 'Switch Pro', how powerful will it be knowing Nintendo?, XB1?, maybe PS4 level?. Hows that going to work game wise?. I mean Switch is 3 or 4 times less powerful than XB1 and PS4, and we have already seen how cut back ports to Switch have been this gen, but if a Switch Pro is 8 or 9 times less powerful than XSX/PS5, 3rd party support will probably dry up completely, or next gen ports will be out of the question at least.

I'm more than okay with my Nintendo console just getting Nintendo games, smaller ports, and the occasional exclusive. I find owning a Switch and at least one other console takes up the majority of my free time as it is. I don't think I'm too far off from the average Switch users experience.

Nope. I maintained two consoles (Sony & Nintendo) up until the PS3. After collecting around 100 PS3 games and hardly ever playing them I realized I really only enjoy and gravitate towards playing Nintendo games / systems. Graphics can look cool, but Nintendo games play cool. For me, Nintendo provides all the gaming fun I need.

Pretty much this.

If switch 2 can pump out ps4 level graphics .. games like whatever you think is wow on the Xbox one and PS4 .. god of war, Deathstranding etc. that will be enough to keep any nintendo fans happy. Even if it's less. Mobile doing last gen console tech in your hands is pretty amazing. I would be happy. Sure just like now, we are not getting games like god of war on switch graphics wise .. look at Hellblade .. but it's amazing it runs it at all in handheld mode. The one game I can't forgive is Mortal Kombat on the switch.. that game looks like ass. Sorry.

Not saying I wouldn't love an 11 Teraflop Nintendo system or something, but it's pretty clear that Nintendo's bread is buttered on the mass market end of the scale, and that they do best there, and seem to have their best output there.

Nintendo is fantastic where it is, focusing on unique features and games.

Not being part of the retard wars is a substantial side benefit.

I don't think Nintendo marching to the beat of their own drum has put them out of the mess at all.

At best, launching their hardware on different years lets them miss those flashpoints where warriors feel threatened by everything the isn't from the mothership and get all aggressive, and the bans flow like water (the last couple of weeks, for example).

On the other, hand, when they do come out, they are the sole new "threat" to the other two camps, so they tend to get it from both sides... not that some Nintendo fanboys don't really ask for it, lol.

For sure, it was cool when Mario and Zelda were part of the best looking games ever. And the new Metroid for example will look very poor compared to other sci fi games.

I think they are actually in a good position to launch a new console next year.

They have already seen the specs the other two are launching with, so now they can easily design a scalable cheap version of those. A console less powerful, but capable of running the same multi games but just at 1080 or even 1440 instead of the 4k or sub 4k the other two are going to run.

With a 4/5 teraflops modern console they could easily play any PS5 multi but with less resolution.

Or they could design a portable console attachable to the Xbox Series X. Could you imagine if Lockhart was actually a MS & Nintendo console?:messenger_face_screaming:

Imagine the memes.

A Switch Pro wouldn't make a difference in 3rd party support anyway, as all ports would have to run on the base hardware as well.

A Switch 2, on the other hand (launched 2-3 years into the generation), might be able to land in the same spot the Switch is in now, just near enough to get downports, especially if there's a lockheart in the equation.

Ports will really depend on how powerful the CPU is though.

I'm a Nintendo fan and I'm not 'missing out' on anything as I own all other platforms.

Fuck me right!

Nope, I'm very glad we dont have to deal with that bs anymore, especially since it's just talking about teraflops and 4k now. I dont care about that stuff, just get me fun and cool games.

I wish it would go away completely, it's made looking through the gaming section significantly less fun honestly.

Theirs also Panic Button so it's not completely off the table.

And curiously it's the only thing they talk about when they try a current gen port of a game on Switch.

At the time of the Wii vs PS3 and 360, I was frustrated at how bad Wii games looked compared to the next gen. But nowaday Nintendo switched (lol) to HD and their first party engines along with their art styles are amazing.
I personally don't give any fuck about 4k (I have a 1080p screen for my gaming PC too) and I think the more we advance in console generations, the less we see improvement. IMO, we attained some kind of photorealism/ cgi like graphics since the ps3/360 gen and nowaday, each gen only adds more bells and whistles.
So while Nintendo is behind the curve in term of raw power, they are not really limited by technology anymore.

Next gen is all about ssd and a new white controller. Next gen sounds pretty boring.
