Exclusivity is dead, NeoGAF - do you think Nintendo will release games on other hardware in the next 10 years?

Do you see Nintendo releasing games on other hardware within the next 10 years?

  • Yes, older Virtual Console releases on PC/mobile

  • Yes, multiplayer and GaaS games like Splatoon or Mario Maker on other hardware

  • Yes, releases of third party collaborations like Bayonetta 3 on other hardware

  • Yes, releases of older Switch/2 hits like BOTW or Animal Crossing on other hardware

  • Yes, releases of their games on other hardware on Day One

  • Yes, continued minimal support of their mobile games

  • I don't think Nintendo will release games on other hardware in this period

No. Other than their phone stuff. They just sold 5 million consoles in a month. Nintendo is doing good.

Nintendo would fold really fast if they started going third party.

Mediocre yet fun games that only survives on nostalgia.
and sales. Considering Nintendo games sell better than Sonys even though Sony release their games on PC.

This is all to say: No OP, Nintendo has no reason to go multiplatform.

Definitely not within 10 years. I assume they'll push Switch 2 for the next 8 years, just like they did with Switch (1). And assuming they're successful again this gen I can't see them changing the their current strategy in the slightest going into the Switch 2 successor.

So maybe within 20 years.

That page isn't complete at all. And there's the exclusive PS4, PS1, PS2, PSP games too (plus via cloud and sub, PS3).
What is it missing?

Counting backward compatibility as "exclusive" is a new low for Sony fans, tbh. Especially since, by definition, games that can also be played on PS1/2/3/4/P/V... are not exclusive to begin with.

Why does this poll allow multiple selections?
Theoretically multiple of these things can happen. Like Virtual Console releases, mobile releases, third party collab releases. I didn't want to limit what all people guessed might happen, so I allowed multiple selections.

They will go out of business before they port anything to PC or other consoles.
They have shareholders though. And I'm not sure about what the laws are, but I don't think you can just commit corporate suicide if there's a legitimate option to keep the company going.

Not that I think any such thing would happen in the foreseeable future.

Yes, particularly for Playstation and Xbox who have eroded away their identity. Exclusivity is what has made Nintendo successful, it's also what made Apple successful and many other companies.
If Nintendo started porting their games to PC and other consoles, they would no longer have their own console. There would be no reason for anyone to buy it.

Not only that, as a third party Nintendo wouldn't be able to make the amount and breadth of games they currently do. They would have to focus only on their biggest sellers and would probably just become a Mario Kart and Pokemon factory. The quality of the games would invariably diminish as well.

The people who want all consoles to go away and console makers to just become PC publishers have no idea what they are really asking for.

No. I despise their hardware but love smash bros. However I refuse to buy their hardware just for one game.

Since it's practically a GaaS at this point it would do huge numbers on pc. But Nintendo are retards and would never do that.

Sony are publishing a highly successful GaaS game to another platform, which is what they were always planning on. Destiny 3 will be multiplatform. Where's the surprise?

People are making a big deal about this now.. wonder why that is.

Yeah right. There will be playstation games on Nintendo hardware before Nintendo releases their stuff on another console.

Stupid question.

Exclusivity is dead

I would argue exclusivity is selective for Sony at this time. I do not have a crystal ball so I cannot predict the future. For all I know, Microsoft/Xbox will go back to "console" exclusivity once some deals expire. 🤷‍♂️

exclusivity produces big, impressive, hardware pushing games because you need to have an impressive title to sell consoles. SIMPLE AS THAT

They just had a record selling system, the Switch.
They can't risk to devalue the brand for the sake of possible more software profit from Steam releases.

There are things I needed in my life to keep me centered. Coca Cola is in a red can. Apple makes Macintosh computers. Jack Daniels is shitty whiskey. Most importantly Nintendo sells Nintendo games on Nintendo Hardware. If they didn't my life would be off balance.

Clearly all of these games need to be on PC so they can find an audience and make money for Nintendo! It would be smart business!

Sony and Xbox are both multimedia business.

The only reason Nintendo would stick to exclusives is because they are a solely video game company.

Microsoft? They are the owners of the biggest OS system in the world, they can release titles anywhere they want.

Sony? Movies, Cars, TVs... they can release their titles on rival platforms if they want to, as long as they don't release stuff day one like Xbox does.

Thread.

Nintendo are a very traditional console 1st company. I can't ever see them giving other consoles their games. PC maybe but not Playstation or Xbox.

Not even PC. Nintendo loves there fanbase and they have a reputation of being the home of legendary exclusives. Nintendo will never ever port there exclusive up to the end of the world. 😁

I've being hearding that crap since the Wii era. People aways saying the same shit but is nothing more than a wetdream from PC players. Repeating the same portbegging monologue won't make this magically a thing.

This generation, Nintendo will hit the same wall PlayStation did at the end of the PlayStation 4. For the Switch 2 to outsell the Switch, it has to be the best selling console of all time. The industry isn't expanding, so there's no new people to sell to. Thus, the best they can hope for is to equal past successes. And that won't satisfy investors, who will demand a proper return on their investment. How do you sell more games to make more money when you can't sell more hardware? Simple: you sell your games on other hardware. Xbox did it first because, frankly, they had to otherwise there wouldn't be an Xbox. Sony's already started, with it's biggest and best now available on PC, and some of their titles are making their way to Xbox. Nintendo has experimented with Mobile, as a way of keeping investors happy. This generation, those same investors will demand more. And more. And more. Until Nintendo has to release games elsewhere because there's just no other way to sell more games.

Nintendo did try that. release games even on mobile. didn't work out for them. not gonna do it again.

The only reason I see Nintendo making some games available on mobile again is if their hardware sales is way below expectations. which I don't see it happening. and even if they do, they have the money to make another hardware and try again and again.

Kinda why Nintendo is the only King to be honest. I do not necessary enjoy all their games but if they make a game that click with me, it goes to the top 10 games of all time ( OoT, Mario Kart ( all of them ) Mario 64 )

I think Nintendo understand that their exclusives are what drives the success of their platforms and won't do much more for other hardware than support what's already out.

They won't do this, but they should release their games on PC. One of the benefit of consoles is that piracy is more difficult... unless you're Nintendo. Piracy is easy and rampant with Nintendo consoles, so releasing on PC isn't going to open them up to anymore potential losses in sales due to piracy. Yuzu and Ryujinx thrived for a reason: because Nintendo piracy was already easy. Releasing their games on PC would result in them raking in extra money with very little risk.
This.
A Switch 2 emulator is already in the works.
