To resolve some of the confusion ITT:
There are two types of sweat glands on most humans, apocrine glands and eccrine glands.
  • Eccrine glands are all over the body on all races of people and produce sweat when you are overheated, or with sympathetic activation (i.e. "adrenaline"). This sweat is generally odorless and evaporates to cool the body.
  • Apocrine glands, on the other hand, are on a few select places: armpits, nipples, ear canals, and genital region. These are the glands responsible for body odor (supposedly a vestigial remnant of pheromones). As this article states, East Asians do not have apocrine glands, while those of European descent do. People of Sub-Saharan African descent have the largest and most active apocrine glands, so it's sort of a spectrum.
Hope this helps explain things.

I had always found it confusing why deodorant was non existent, or if available then way over priced here in Korea. then I read that Asians don't have BO, but do have hard ear wax.

I do find it has become more available here, maybe they are trying to tell us smelly foreigners something

I recently moved to korea.

Was having dinner with an American. He asked me where I can buy deoderant. Being asian, I told him we don't use deoderant, and just shower every morning will be just fine.

Now that I read this and realize there is a genetic component to this, I wonder if I made a mistake.

the only people I know who use deodorants are the people who go to the gym.

Black people, white people, and arabic people all smell a certain way to me when they don't wear deodorant and perspire. I don't notice the smell of other asians, but I think it's because I'm used to it. For example, like noticing the smell of your family's house after coming home from college.

Maybe you don't smell other asians' perspiration because you're used to it.

I ain't an asian person but I'm married to one--there's certainly a need for deodorant but it's not as pressing as is for a stinky white guy like myself.

Used to work with an indian guy that thought he didn't stink. Dude had the worst BO of anyone I have ever been around, all could have been prevented by using deodorant, but he didn't believe in the stuff. Guy may have not showered either by his smell.

Do us all a favor and wear deodorant, you probably stink to others.

I'm half Korean, and i've never worn it in my entire life (i've also been a competitive tennis player most my life too), and i have no odor, and it's not just my imagination as friends/loved ones have told me i don't have any body odor. My mother (full Korean) is the same way (as is her immediate family, 2 brothers and a sister), she was also lucky enough to have no hair grow on her arms or legs and has never had to shave (i wasn't so lucky in that respect).
I have very little body hair too btw. And sorry if this is also tmi, but significant others have told me that i also don't have the usual odors "down there"

Wet here, or at least I think so. I don't build up a lot of wax. After showers the q-tip is typically clean, I just run it through because I enjoy the sensation and I hate water in the ears. When there is wax, it's like it's painted onto the cotton so I guess it's wet.

However, I don't use deodorant much either, if at all. My pits don't smell unless I haven't showered in 4+ days or I've been sweating a lot.

Indians are not east asians. They are usually called south asians. The genetic component the OP was referring to is for east asians, where it is 90 percent prevalent.

Off topic, but I keep seeing it in this thread so I thought I should mention it.

Don't use q tips to clean your ears!

who the hell says we don't shower? as a matter of fact i probably shower more than most people (at least twice a day, because of work and working out/tennis), that's different than not wearing deodorant

This explains a lot. I'm Asian, produce dry earwax, don't need deodorant and don't smell at all according to my wife and previous girlfriends.

Hadn't heard about the sweat before, but it was a thing I noticed while staying in Japan. Barely any anti-perspirant deodorants, and a whole lot of synthetic shirts in the summer. I had to get stuff from Amazon.

I also have dry earwax and was freaked out to discover as a kid that some of my classmates had wet earwax.

Beware though, the wet earwax genes are dominant if I remember correctly.
My wife is Japanese, has dry earwax and no body odor. She could run a fucking marathon and her pits would still smell nothing, while simply running 30 feet would probably be enough to make wet-earwax me a pariah for life without deodorant (European with some non-smelly Chinese ancestry).
First time my wife saw wet earwax was when she cleaned the ears of our then toddler son, she was a bit freaked out.
Factoid: there is a specific word for smelly pits in Japanese, "wakiga", and it is considered a disease - to the point treatments are available, and even covered by insurance in some instances.
The most radical - and widespread - "cure" is an operation where people have their apocrine glands cut off from their armpits, ending up simply deprived from the ability to sweat from there.

Interestingly, there seem to be discrepancies in the prevalence of the wet earwax gene within certain east-Asian populations. For example, it is a lot more widespread in Okinawa than in the rest of Japan.

I'm white, but I'd certainly never call my earwax wet, sticky or yellow! It's dry and white if anything. Wtf?

Maybe I need to look at my Korean gf's earwax to compare.... Now how to bring this up...?

Ive never heard of anyone with dry and white earwax. Are you putting baby powder in your ears?

I'm asian and I never used deodorant in my life before. Never heard a peep from people around me about smells too. I shower every day with soap but that's it. Apparently it's a common genetic trait of East Asians to lack the gene that produces body odor from armpits.

We literally have less sweat glands than the rest of you.

You may not think you stink, but trust me you do. I live in South Korea where a lot of men do not use deoderant and they smell... a lot.

I think you mean that ignorant people are on a roll in this thread.

Hah I think some people are being purposely obtuse. I don't think they're actually that dumb to not know the distinction between the lack of the daily need for deodorant versus bad hygiene. If you don't shower for days (or wash your clothes), you're going to smell regardless of your genetics. That being said, all things being equal, some people in this thread simply aren't going to stink like some other folks given the same effort of cleanliness.

Here in Korea deodorant is a pain in the ass to find in stores, which is most likely because of the fact that nobody really needs it. I have yet to have bad BO experiences in public transport either. However, back when I lived in Taiwan I noticed that some guys, especially in busses, would give off pretty terrible BO. So I think in Taiwan people generally are more susceptible to armpit smells and indeed, deodorant is more widely sold in stores, but is apparently not used by everyone yet. In Europe (Netherlands in my case) it's a must, pretty much everyone will smell like crap after their frantic morning cycling to get to work/school and those who don't apply deodorant will stink like hell.

Bullshit.

Everyone can and does stink unless taken care of.

People not screaming in agony is no indication of good smell either.

I don't get why this is such a shocking idea. Did you have BO when you were a kid? No, you didn't.

Yo the people you run into that don't smell? They probably don't use deodorant either. Drop the confirmation bias.

Why is it the internet keeps coming up with these ideas that they don't have to do some very basic hygenie thing and still smell fine. You most likely smell and people around you don't have the decency to tell you or they got used to it

I don't wear deodorant most of the time because I have a weird skin condition or issues that could flare up if I fiddle too much with my sweat glands/pores lol.
Luckily, I do not stink much! (I have asked others to smell me to make sure!)
I feel a lot of you are sad because you have to spend more money and time on deodorants, but it's true.. Some people do not emit as powerful a BO smell and they are lucky (just like there are those who almost do nothing for their teeth but hardly get any stains or cavities).

I wish I did have dry earwax though. Wet gooey wax is pretty gross to scoop out.
