asian people of neogaf, do you wear deodorant?

As a Turk I'm jealous of my East Asian ancestors who apparently had no body odour. But now we're mixed in with European/Middle Eastern genes and are stinky and hairy.

I know plenty of people(mostly women, men stink!!) without the need of deodorant in daily life. There are people with no or little body order. Is this reaaally news to GAF?

Most Turks are descended from the Anatolians that were already there when the Turks arrived,

growing up in vietnam pretty much no one wear deodorant since most people don't have noticeable BO. In fact the people that do stand out greatly and were treated like they have some kind of disease when I was growing up in the early 90s. Even now the commercial for deodorant there advertise it more like a treatment and not a basic hygiene product.

Can anyone tell me why there seems to be a Chinese "prejudice" as to why westerners smell bad?
If I talk to Chinese, it seems a lot of people think westerners have some kind of "base" smell compared to asians. A lot of chinese in China are telling me that.

Judging from my experience it doesnt matter if you are asian or westerner. If you dont take a shower, you smell. If you take a shower, you dont.

Wow, chalk this down to another superpower we Asians have, along side magically being able to handle school and eternal youth =p

No really though, I had a few stinker friends.

To be honest, I don't know where does it come from. But yeah it's like "common sense" in China. Perhaps it's because most people in China don't use deodorant while westerns use it, and it has that distinct smell which makes Chinese folks think it is for covering some kind of "base" smell. Or just some western dudes forgot to wear it during summer and became the talk among Chinese...

This is a bogus article, because it is not the sweat that smells, it is bacteria that builds up in places that sweat and are warm, such as armpits. No persons sweat actually smells, unless you are talking about secretions of things like garlic. A bad body odour simply means that person needs a wash.

Eh you're probably East Asian and either didn't notice or forgot about it.

Lol @ or forgot about it, I know what you're saying just reading that out was amusing. Who knows maybe you're right but I'm definitely white as white can be from a visual standpoint. I actually have no idea of the lineage on my dad's side of the family so anything's possible.

IME, people are often not good judges of how much they stink. Also, just because people don't tell you that doesn't mean you're stank-free.

I definitely have friends who often don't wear deodorant, and many of them can get fairly stanktastic. I didn't use to tell them because I figured they already knew. Apparently, that's not the case, and they're just so used to it that they don't notice.

For the benefit of all, if you take public transit or go out to nice restaurants on hot days, wear deodorant.

Also, mandatory euro-disclaimer: half a bottle of cologne still cannot hide the smell of BO.

Yeah yeah dude, I've heard all this shit before. Now obviously I can't speak for everyone but I'm not mistaken when I say that I have very little body odor compared to the average person and it takes me much longer to become noticeably smelly. You can obviously think I'm just wrong if you like.

To resolve some of the confusion ITT:
There are two types of sweat glands on most humans, apocrine glands and eccrine glands.
  • Eccrine glands are all over the body on all races of people and produce sweat when you are overheated, or with sympathetic activation (i.e. "adrenaline"). This sweat is generally odorless and evaporates to cool the body.
  • Apocrine glands, on the other hand, are on a few select places: armpits, nipples, ear canals, and genital region. These are the glands responsible for body odor (supposedly a vestigial remnant of pheromones). As this article states, East Asians do not have apocrine glands, while those of European descent do. People of Sub-Saharan African descent have the largest and most active apocrine glands, so it's sort of a spectrum.
Hope this helps explain things.

Interesting stuff, I definitely sweat very lightly all over my body but don't sweat much in the other areas with apocrine glands, hell I don't think I've ever had nipple sweat that I can recall heh. Always amazes me that people are so quick to dismiss anything outside of the ordinary.

When I was in china this summer I accidentally spent a month using hairspray instead of deodorant because I couldn't read the label and bought the only deodorant looking thing in the store. I knew it smelled weird

Maybe because westerners do smell more?

Saying as a westerner. Or rather, a non-Asian. I've dated girls from Japan and Korea and yeah, we probably do give off more of a fragrance. They're surprised that there's a fragrance at all. It has even been described to me as attractive, just unlike what they know.

It's fine. Vive la differance.

Asian here and I'm in the same boat as op. I don't produce odor, had no idea wet ear wax was a thing.

But I still put on deodorant just in case.

People in Japan don't really use deodorant either. It's just recently becoming a thing, and holy hell some of these dudes stink up the train like spicy sweat smeared under your nose.

I had to have deo shipped to China when I lived there last year. There's some available here in Vietnam, which I'm thankful for.

I wonder if the issue is a general lack of body hair. I got pits full of gnarly, smelly hair.

It's even bolded in the OP.

So what is bogus now?

Finding a deodorant was a bitch living in Seoul.
Yeah I know that feel. Went into a general cosmetics shop (Olive Young) and there were a billion brands of everything but the only deodorant they have is fucking Nivea Men.
But then I realized I don't smell anyway so I never bought another. Although yeah I heard there's something about people not being able to smell their own odor.

Sometimes the subway can be bad here in Beijing. Also, from my experience, each race has their own kind of smell. I don't know why, but my nose can tell the difference between them, especially black people, which are very distinct but not bad. Asian's are a little odd, but ok, and Turks are delicious. I'm white, so on that I can't tell.

For what its worth. Only mainland southeast asian that share genetic with east asian. The genetic sharing is a lot less down south due to the mix with austroloid race. So its quite confusing when the article only mention east asian. Most of the time it means people from mongoloid race. Not people living on asia continent.

Most east asians men and women don't stink that much hence they don't need deodorant.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_odor

East Asians have fewer apocrine sweat glands compared to people of other descent, and the lack of these glands make East Asians less prone to body odor.[16][17] The reduction in body odor and sweating may be due to adaptation to colder climates by their ancient East Asian ancestors.[18] The ABCC11 gene is known to determine axillary body odor, but also the type of earwax.[4][18][19][20] Most of the world's population secrete the wet-type earwax, however, East Asians are genetically predisposed for the allele that codes the dry-type earwax, associated with a reduction in axillary body odor.[4][18][20] The loss of a functional ABCC11 gene is caused by a 538G>A single-nucleotide polymorphism, resulting in a loss of body odor in people who are specifically homozygous for it.[20][21] The non-functional ABCC11 allele is predominant amongst East Asians (80–95%), but very low in other ancestral groups (0–3%).[4] It affects apocrine sweat glands by reducing secretion of odorous molecules and its precursors.[4] It is also associated with a strongly reduced/atrophic size of apocrine sweat glands and a decreased protein (such as ASOB2) concentration in axillary sweat.[4]

Given the history of GAF threads, I'd wager the only interaction most of them have had with an Asian is seeing one on TV.

Mostly correct! Here is a cookie.
And no, I don't wear deodorant cause it's uncomfortable for me. Plus, if you are going to do something sweaty, why the fuck would you put one on anyway? You are going to smell either way.

I am now convinced nobody bothers to actually read what is right there in the OP, so there is no point arguing about it. They just come in here seeking confirmation of their preconceived ideas.

Nope. I have dry earwax. I only actually learnt less than half a year ago that wet ear wax exists and I was like WHAT THE FUUUUUUUCK. How did I live almost 30 years without knowing wet ear wax was a thing? What does it even look like? Sounds really gross.

I think I probably do smell somewhat after sweating a lot, but it's faint. I can't really assess myself though it seems unnecessary to put on deodorant in most circumstances.

Does this mean all Asians who have body odour problems have wet ear wax? Or are there smelly Asians with dry ear wax and vice versa?

I am now convinced nobody bothers to actually read what is right there in the OP, so there is no point arguing about it. They just come in here seeking confirmation of their preconceived ideas.
The bacteria feeds on the substances that are secreted more when you sweat though? So obviously, the more you sweat, the more there is for the bacteria to feed on and produce the smelly byproducts.

EDIT: Okay, I read the rest of the thread and some of it is pretty idiotic. I don't know if people are being deliberately obtuse or just plain jelly.

Clarification to those people: Nobody is saying that hygiene is not important. Nobody is saying Asians don't have to shower or wash their clothes. I think you'll find that most Asians shower every day.

Nobody is saying that Asians don't smell after a workout or physical activity. But if they do smell, it's a different sort of smell altogether and not as overpowering and off-putting as what is most commonly described as BO. Maybe they just need to wipe the sweat down with a towel. Who knows.

For those people who are saying "Fuck off, learn some basic hygiene and put on that deodorant", read the freaking article: deodorant is redundant and pointless if those glands don't exist. I don't know if that's still the case if the gland are simply atrophied, but it's still a great deal less effective. Maybe you hate the non-BO Asian smell. Oh well.

Also, I absolutely hate people tho spray on deodorant on the train. God fucking damn, it's almost as bad as stinking up the place with your BO. Put it on in the locker room or toilet you assholes.

My best friend in school was asian and he sweated and smelled so fucking much, while i sweated 0, have no body odor, and i'm still that way at 30.

Guess you can't explain that science!

Oh, I also have little to no armpit hair. How common is that amongst Asians? How did that happen? What effect does that have on body odour?

I do sometimes, but it isn't exactly necessary. I wonder if the same gene that makes my armpits stay fresh also make my balls smell worse because I'm fairly certain I have really smelly balls.
Uhhhhh. Wash your balls bro. And change your undies. >_>

I'm Chinese American and I wear deodorant. I visited China several years ago in the summer and people over there don't wear deodorant. How do I know this? Because they stunk really bad especially on a subway....

So what happened to the unfortunate people over the past 'several thousand' years who had smelly pits? Were they pushed off a cliff before they had a chance to procreate?
We'll given that they were selected out, they probably died lonely because they stank.

I have a 5 min commute and sit at a desk all day. Don't really need deodorant since I'm not moving around much. I only wear it when I go out.

i use deodorant. my sweat glands are out of control but rarely do i sweat in my armpit but i just use deodorant because it smells nice.

I think the thing with the people who keep bringing this up is that, yes there are some Asians who don't have this Asian gene variation. Just like non-Asians, they will have really bad BO, and since deodorant isn't really available, they get used to it and don't think there's a problem.

And it really only takes a few of these people to stink up the entire train.

That is supported by the article and isn't evidence to the contrary. The 80-95% off people who don't smell bad on the train are automatically discounted because there are people who do.

I think the natural sweat sort of odor is just different but not bad and I have definitely noticed a difference among how different races sweat smells. I read about some study once that shows people have a slight bias for sweat that comes from people with greater genetic difference actually (read: interracial banging is good)

But if you let sweat be on your body for too long then there'll be bacteria and that will have a bad odor. And if you're obese and have rolls of fat that are hard to clean when showering, then that can give off a bad odor. Obviously, people in east Asia have low rates of obesity which might explain the lack of deodorant there.
