Assassin's Creed: Revelations Review Thread

The key phrase from IGN review: " And yet it works"

It does seem the devs are struggling with new 'fresh' stuff for this series. Most reviews are saying the new stuff are meh at best.

Will check this out for the... plot, at the next steam sale.

It strikes me as completely ass-backwards that adding new mechanics with each installment garners criticism for "feature bloat," where something like CoD gets an A+++, a gold star, and a smiley face sticker for "SAME GREAT GAMEPLAY AS ALWAYS!"

Gotta love video game journalism.

Pretty much.

"Same engine", "same gameplay" and "feature bloat" are all positives as far as I'm concerned. The AC games are still some the most technically accomplished open-world titles available, the gameplay is satisfying, and I enjoyed all of the secondary fluff in Brotherhood.

yup, been playing all weekend and it's the most polished to date.

Looking at reviews it seems like the worst possible place to jump into the series. That sucks, I never played an AC game but want to and with the black friday deal along revelations capping off the story lines for two characters it seemed like it might be an interesting place to start. Plus I'm sure this will have the more active multiplayer community

Plus I love the idea of playing an old guy. Not something you see too much in games.

Can anyone comment if they game has a series of intro movies or anything like that? Also do you run around the den (like say dungeon defenders) or is it straight tower defense? I haven't seen the answer

Yeah, I cleared pretty much every little dot on the map in Brotherhood and wanted more. So having another game full of that stuff along new stuff added is totally cool with me.

renovating shops and landmarks never gets old. plus you get plenty of new faction sidequests. a TON of them.

It seems like this one is for fans only. So I guess add two points if you're a fan.

pretty much. judging from what i've played so far, they're clearing up questions all the way from the first game.

PSNation: B-

Conclusion:

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations is a great game – I just don’t know if it’s a great Assassin’s Creed game. Everything you like about Assassin’s Creed is here – combat, navigation, ultra-strangled-storyline, environment, graphics, sound – wrapped in a pretty little bow. But I can’t help but feel that the series is heading toward an identity crisis – as it is over-saturation.

If Ubisoft Montreal is a pimp, (lets call him Monty) then Ezio’s been Monty’s top-bitch for the last two years running. But Ezio’s getting old now. There are gaps in her fishnets, lines on her face, her lips have gone sour – even her crabs are starting to get crabs. It’s hard for us tricks (squares call them “Johns”) to drive up the track every year and see Ezio standing there – alone, shivering, strung-out and tired, sucking the protein out of cigarette butts for breakfast…. Ezio needs her retirement Monty. Give the bitch a break. Sure she’s made you mo’ money than any ho’ before her. But it’s time to turn out a new bitch. So take a few years off and rethink this thing before it burns itself out.

Remember what Eidos (call him “Eddy) did to Lara Croft? Poor girl could barely walk or brush her teeth after Eddy got through with her…

probably the rushed 3ds to hd move didn't help matters?
Come now, it wasn't nearly as simple as that. This was in development, the 3DS sku was canned and some ideas were brought over (Tower Defence stuff, iirc).

GT review helped to fan my interest, though all of the 'new' concepts added to the game really seem to come across as needless bloat as somewhat described as in the review(Tower defense, First-Person platforming, bomb creation). None of it looked enticing in the video at all either, but I adored AC2 and Brotherhood. I'm in for whatever brilliant conclusion the review stated it having.

Really bummed that the economy is still fucked though. Obscenely dissatisfying how bloated my coffers were in AC2 and Brotherhood. Really wish it were re-thought or excised from the experience. It never really amounted to much anyway beyond achievements.

Reviews just seem like they're another notch down in the 1 year cycle post-AC2 string of games.

That always happens with annual releases. ACB received lower scores than AC2, but I thought it was a great deal better. I also have a rather rotund soft spot for the first game as well.

Can't wait. Glad we get one more game in the middle east before they throw a new setting at us.

Wired: 7/10

TIRED Feature bloat, same old 2007 engine, same old 2009 gameplay.

Same could be said about this other game which name escapes me right now.

Anyway, I am still looking forward to this game I wasn't expecting a 10 either, I am usually not a fan of sandbox games, but I always have so much fun playing AC and I kind of dig the settings and the story as well.

Sounds like they need to get Patrice back designing the games.
Fixed.

Pumping the games out annually was going to catch up with them eventually. Maybe they need alternating teams like Call of Duty.

I'm definitely looking forward to this, irrelevant of the reviews.

I do understand where the reviewers are coming from, however. This could be regarded as another expansion of ACII to them, despite new gameplay features, a new area, an older Ezio, etc. (kinda what Brotherhood did and contained, itself).

I'd imagine the idea is for Assassin's Creed 3 to be a reboot of sorts, or a big bang finale to the Desmond storyline. Then again, will Ubi-Soft accomplish such a thing considering the game is out within a year?

it's modern and about war?

I really hope they make some drastic changes in AC 3. I'm fine with it when a direct sequel like this keeps most of the game mechanics + engine but I want to see some real major changes in the next one.

Yup, same here. The Ezio games really are a trilogy, and their similarities help tie it all together into a very cohesive, detailed, and grand adventure.

I'll be happy to see them mix things up for ACIII, but with Rev, I think it's a good thing they stuck with what they know.

Problem is the basic premise is not being improved: being an assassin. The combat is unbalanced, enemies not challenging, you can't hide using the environment itself (yo uhave to hide in specific hiding spots), etc. etc.

Instead of improving on the premise itself they just add more side stuff.

So, it's a copy and paste with a few new additions?

AC3 better have a brand new engine.
Your request doesn't necessarily mean anything any more. There are usually plenty of upgrades made under the hood between each installment Unless they switch over to completely different software for some odd reason, the line between "new engine" and "updated engine" is pretty much just the arbitrary decision to make more changes than usual and give it a new name.

In addition, "copy and paste with a few new additions" is also an accurate description of Super Mario Galaxy 2, which is perhaps one of the greatest sequels of all time, so that doesn't mean much either.

Yeah people thinking the engine is an issue don't know how game development works.

Maybe they'll pull a Frostbite 2.0, and introduce a new, scalable engine that will look good on current hardware and be adaptable for next gen as well, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations- Blah out of Blah

Who cares, still buying this bitch in a Black Friday deal. The Assassins games always get massive price cuts for Black Friday :D

damn right, story is sooo good. i don't care how much you guys are buying it for. JUST BUY IT!

I love how reviewers decided to be honest with Assassin's Creed reviews. I guess they figure handing out an 8 or 9 to yet another game this fall will hurt their reputations.

Pretty much every big game release this fall should have been getting scores like this instead of the 9s/10s/best game evar bullshit.

Why? The current engine still looks better than 99% of what's coming out. Besides, in order to see any real improvement we'd need new hardware or the game would need to be developed for the PC.

So I guess I'm getting Skyrim and getting ACR on BF. can't wait, always lived the series but the inevitability of the price dropping detours me from spending 60 on it.

i played it a bit - but the charriot race was just awful and i died a few times, trying to destroy the enemy - then i tried just to get to the end of the level and yeah - cutscene and it was over - horrible design.

but the visuals are really nice, much nicer than brotherhood (which i felt looked really tired)

Heh, like I figured. Good game, but the one year cycle is not the right move for a series like this. Too much too fast with not nearly enough change in between games, especially since we've already seen what they did with a 2 year gap.

At least it'll be $40 in like 2 weeks.

And shame on reviewers for deciding out of the blue to dock points for "being samey" when Modern Warfare 3 and Uncharted 3, among others, should've gotten the same treatment.

I love the AC series so i couldn't care less about these reviews. The story is so intriguing and i like gameplay mechanics.

They way these "reviewers" talk about the game being the same as past ones, and tiring, you would think the COD games would get a 0/0. But thats not the case obviously.

Can't wait to play this game

Oh no, ACR is pretty much the same as ACII and Brotherhood, which I thought were great and replay fairly regularly and so this will basically just give me more of what I like, in a new setting with some new features? Damn, it's too late to cancel my pre-order.
