Assassin's Creed: Revelations Review Thread

I didn't expect these low scores. I guess the series has started to overstay its welcome.
I bet part of the problem is that these reviewers are swamped and are mainlining the story and not doing all of the side stuff. I think if you want a fair opinion on the game, listen to next week's Rebel FM. Read joystiq's review-- Arthur really liked Brotherhood and it seems like he really likes Revelations. Doesn't seem like a disappointment to me.

i didn't see much screen tearing actually :)

I'm playing the 360 version, and there is a good amount of tearing sometimes, especially during some cutscenes. It could be the same as 2 and Brotherhood, but for some reason it's more noticeable.

It's there but much improved over the previous games, imo.

See, I see it both ways. I loved Brotherhood and am going to have a good time playing Revelations, how ever much like Brotherhood it is. On the other note, I am hoping AC3 is a brand new experience. Keep what made these great, but evolve in the way a numbered sequel should.

When I heard about Revelations I thought to myself "Ehhh, you know Brotherhood was awesome, so I can take one more game as Ezio, but 3 better up the ante" and that is still how I feel.

seems like a solid buy if you are a fan of the Ass Creed franchise, no? A few sevens thrown in there I think due to franchise fatigue.

Shame to see that reviewers aren't really praising the game. Yet, I know it'll be great.

I think it's quite hypocritical from most reviewers who complain about the repetitiveness when Call of Duty does it every single year. Wow. I have truly lost all faith on gaming journalism.

I only speak out of experience with AC1, AC2 and ACB on the PS3. :P

I played all Assassin's Creed on my PS3 and had no problems. Strange.

smfh @ the game journalism.

I'm sure there's a lot of "archaic", "tried, "repetitive" and "recycled" used in those reviews, yet they all probably gave MW3 a 9 or 10.

Who cares. Revelations is gonna be awesome. Best game in Ezio triology. :D

Old Ezio is pretty effing cool.

I guess the series has finally exhausted the whole Jade Raymond-inspired goodwill, the free-ride has got to stop eventually.

That's virtually exactly how I feel. As far as I'm concerned, Brotherhood and Revelations are essentially filler spin-offs in between AC2 and AC3. I genuinely expected Brotherhood to be crap. It surprised me by actually being quite good, filler or not. If Revelations can at least manage the same trick, I'm good. But I'll be expecting much more from AC3 proper.

Looks like franchise fatigue is really starting to hit the enthusiast press (likely aptly so). The "Its well made but ultimately more of the same and needs to move on" has been applied to every major release this fall sans Skyrim. The side effects of this extralong console cycle are starting to manifest.

That's because they are essentially filler spin-offs between AC2 an AC3. :p

Edit: On the subject of AC3, I sincerely hope Ubi bring back the player-directed approach to assassinations. Leaving the player to his/her own devices as to how best to approach each target was, by far, the best aspect of the original game.

People surprised that reviewers (and possibly audience) are getting fatigue of AC and not MW need to understand the obvious that MW has the emphasis on multiplayer and the community flows to every iteration religiously because that's where your friends/competitors will be this year. AC is primarily a single player experience that if treated like a sports series with yearly releases without any substantial novelty besides locations will stale much more quickly.

So can we assume this is the game Geoff Keighley has been talking about?

I called it. :)

The prince of persia T2T syndrome is in full effect this game from the sound of the reviews.

*interesting*

After maxing out my online level at 50 in Brotherhood, I am actually getting this one mostly for multiplayer.

Well, the bad news is that they're not taking any more time to make AC3 than they did to make Brotherhood or Revelations. So I wouldn't expect many differences other than in story and setting.

Besides, I still think AC1 is hands down the best in series (and best game in over a decade). So the rest of the games are all "filler" as far as I'm concerned. ;)

They've reportedly been working on AC3 in some capacity since 2 came out.

You don't think they are literally developing each of these games in a year, do you? They have multiple teams working on these things in a staggered fashion.

Sort of expected these scores. From what i've seen they didn't change much from Brotherhood.

Still looking forward to finishing Ezio's story.
Some nice surprises for all three guys in the series.

I read/listen very nice things of Brotherhood MP. Would you recommend it to a newcomer or online is a veterans playground by now?

Clearly not. I said this one will get the same amount of time put into it. Never said anything about "a year." Lol.

Regardless, even if they've been thinking about AC3 since AC2, even Ubisoft doesn't have the manpower to put out two additional AC games of this size in two years and have even more teams working on this other game at the same time. So, no, I doubt it's gotten any more time or resources than either of the two most recent releases.

Point being, I expect filler spin-offs to suck, because they usually do.

I'm not as pessimistic as you are. And I strongly disagree with you about AC1. I liked it a lot and it has its share of finer points, but to me it's hands down the weakest in the series.

So, scrolling through the thread it seems the main reason is the fact the formula is getting old?
Maybe logical in one way or another to give it a lower score, but just plain stupid if it's a 'better or just as good' as Brotherhood.

Where Brotherhood enhanced the thrill of being Ezio Auditore, Revelations distracts from it. Ezio may look old, but it's the series itself that really shows its age.

It begins.

Maybe they will take note and stop churning them out every year

And you'd be wrong. Do you realize that Ubisoft Montreal has more than 2500 employees right now? And that the development of both ACB and ACR (and AC2 to a smaller part) was also done by 5 other Ubisoft studios around the world?
As far as I know the core of the Montreal team who worked on these 2 games is from the Prince of Persia 2008 team, and quite a big part of the original Assassin's Creed team, especially the technology team, has been working on AC3 since before AC2 was released.
AC3 has without a doubt been in preproduction for at least 2 years with a medium sized team, and will now get the hundreds and hundreds of developers who worked on ACB and ACR to help do the actual production work on it.

Same here , aside from "animus bugs" , i had no screen tears problems with all PS3 version of creed games.
Please tell me you are not speaking about AC1, because that game on PS3 was one of the most tearing happy game I've ever seen.

I'll happily get a game as good as Revelations every year for the next 10 year if they keep it at this level. And I'm not joking. Give me a new city, new tombs and a good enough story to support the missions every year, and I'll be happy.

I maxed out my level months ago and stopped playing so not sure what the online is like now. I'm sure a ton of people are going to stop playing Brotherhood online come tomorrow.

It has a steep learning curve but once you "get it" you have so much fun tracking people down. My favorite mode was called "Manhunt" which is basically hide and seek. I loved it and people who came over liked to watch me play it because the game was so unique.

It's so nice to not have a multiplayer game be a FPS and I loved every minute of my level 50.

So, what you're saying is that we'll never have a PoP 2012? Bummer...

They've got to expect a little backlash after a third year in a row.
I think the real lesson here is "Who gives a shit?". If you liked AC2, you'll like Brotherhood. If you liked Brotherhood, you'll like Revelations. So enjoy it.

Sounds like sequel fatigue, Ubisoft needed to give the series at least a year rest. Hopefully ACIII switches things up and provides more than just a handful of improvements on the existing formula and has more of a AC->II jump.

This makes me sad about PoP's future? Any chance of a new PoP game Blim?

Didn't Ubi patch in v-sync? Or was it removed with a patch? I can't seem to commit the case to memory.

I honestly don't know, sorry. I loved Prince of Persia 2008 and I'd enjoy getting a sequel very much, but I have no idea if it's ever going to happen.
JaseC said:

You can't simply patch in vsync and expect it to solve the issues. If a 30 fps game is tearing like crazy in the first place, adding vsync will simply mean every non complete frame will be dropped, and you'll get a framerate halved.

I've been a huge fan of the AC franchise ever since the first one launched but I might have to pass on Revelations. I got Brotherhood around Christmas last year and it took me up until a few months ago to finally beat that one, I just don't think I can handle another similar game such a short while later. Maybe I'll pick it up sometime next year when I'm not swimming in awesome games.

I loved AC2 and really enjoyed Brotherhood when I finally got into it, but I'm ready for something genuinely new from this franchise.

Very mild spoiler :
Altaïr's ending is great, it would be a shame to miss it

I know how vsync works, but you weren't referring to the framerate per se - just the tearing.

If these scores indicate a "backlash"... wow, they got off easy.

I'm mostly talking about review text. Nearly every one I skimmed through mentioned some franchise fatigue.
