Assassin's Creed Syndicate |OT| Once more unto the glitch

I am actually surprised people have not quoted this and argued over it. Brotherhood is considered one of the best AC games (with the best gameplay).

Depends on where you'd ask because we have the topic fairly often and I'd say AC 2 is almost always the top choice on Gaf.

I'd say Brotherhood was the point where most people thought it was starting to get a little stale. Then it only got worse from there.

I will never understand why people enjoy Rogue. Found the hunt the Assassins mechanic endlessly frustrating as they one shot you and half the time there is no counter.

My worst of AC list is basically:

0. The non mainline stuff like AC Chronicles
1. Rogue - frustrating gameplay and a last gen retread of 4's mechanics
2. Liberation - terribad framerate, interesting gameplay but bland story
3. Unity - it's inoffensive but so, so bland

The game I would put on the highlight list (even though it's not mainline) is Project Legacy. Syndicate reuses some of its story content (and it was a FB game so it's really just all story content) but reading about the different pieces of eden was really interesting.

Agreed. Even though Brotherhood was not as big of a leap as AC2 was from AC1 (and tbh I dont think anyone was expecting it to be) gameplay wise, it was better than AC2. Everything (gameplay-wise) that AC2 did, AC:Brotherhood did it better.

Overall, AC2 is definitely the best AC game for me too.

Brotherhood was the pinnacle to me. It had all the good parts of 2 with more good stuff added (the assassin den building was great and didn't have the bad parts like the tower defense stuff).

I'm not so sure 2 would hold up if I played it today. It's pretty much just the basic AC formula that we've gotten since without any extra gimmicks or systems that have been added. That's a good and bad thing depending on the system; ship combat and assassin building was fun, bomb crafting, tower defense, economy trading bad.

No, it wasn't. The fact you believe it was a "solid 7.5 back then" says a lot, no offence.

Your gonna have to spell out what that statement says about me, as what I said was completely reasonable, and the reviews at the time reflected this. AC1 was a fun, flawed game with bags of potential. Potential that was realised with it's fantastic sequel.

I really loved Revelations aside from the tower defense. It was literally AC:Brotherhood in constantinople with an upgraded assassin system and more set pieces. Plus it had an amazing ending. I mean goddamn at this sequence.

So much fun, I really haven’t run across an activity/mission that I don’t like. Spent a few hours this weekend doing nothing but hijacking/escorting wagons, got a lot of money and XP along with it. The collectibles seem manageable this type around as well. And thank you Ubisoft for a lockpicking skill instead of a mini-game.

I'm just over 50% completion and this is shaping up to be my favorite AC game.

Was going to purchase this game along with Fallout 4 and Call of Duty Black Ops 3..is Assassins Creed Syndicate worth buying and if so for what console..XBOX ONE or PS4. I know, I ask this in regards to every game I purchase :)

DF and NXG have both given the nod to the PS4 version, mostly due to a better framerate. It also has exclusive side missions, an easy decision if you the choice it seems.

The PS4 version atm has better performance and better vsync. And like others said, free dlc, that is actually quite good.

I've downloaded the free steampunk outfit for Evie but I cant find the bloody thing. Anyone know where it is? Its not showing up in my outfit section.

Personally I feel that Unity isn't really far off from a next-gen remake of AC2. Removed a lot of the extra systems and bloat that had been building up, revamped the parkour, improved combat, focus on a single urban area that is extraordinarily well realized (well more similar to Brotherhood in that respect I guess) etc.

I couldn't even find it on the online store. :/
Oh and turnarounds of the in-game models with the costumes.

Looks a shit ton better in-game than in the concept art imo.
Watching a video it's supposed to be in your outfit section.

Where are the free costumes? Or is it just limited to European countries right now?

Saw it on the US PSN store on my computer. Went to the AC: Syndicate page and it was the first thing listed under add-ons. The full steampunk pack was available for $4.99 as well (for non-season pass holders, which I currently am).

Am I the only one that really like Jacob? Everyone seems to hate the guy but I find him kinda funny and charming in his own way :) The only Assassin's Creed character I hated (still do) is Ezio, for some reason just can't stand the guy lol

I do too. He's funny and likable. Him being a doofus plays off Evie well. She is the superior twin(and my favorite of all assasisns) but she wouldn't be as cool without him around.

Syndicate is great. Either the best or second best AC so far, up there with Black Flag.

IMO modern AC is actually better than the Ezio era. They've streamlined the gameplay, getting rid of a lot of useless or tedious mechanics and I never cared for the Desmond stuff.

I saw it on the PSN UK Website. Might be worth a check. It was in the Syndicate add-ons section.

Sweet. It's there now. It wasn't this morning so I wasn't sure. Thanks peeps.

My brother and his wife bought me Assassin's Creed Syndicate for my birthday. :) I didn't finish Unity, so.. question.. is there anything from Unity (I guess mainly talking about the present day storyline) that I should know about before starting Syndicate? I know the present day storyline has been basically abandoned since AC3/AC4, but just wanted to know anyways. Basically, what happened in Unity on that front?

Unity's present day storyline was a whole lot of nothing but here's video of all the cutscenes, it's only 7 minutes long.

The fact that is is only 7 minutes long is a bit depressing but funny, too. :(

Thanks!

Syndicates is 3 minutes longer than this

At this point, I'd prefer if they just removed MD. I find this current style of it more irritating and obnoxious than people who found the desmond stuff from the previous games to be that.

Or just take a real good effort into it and tell a modern day story similar to the comics like Brahman and Fall/Chain.

There are literally no stakes in modern day, and the past anymore. Because all you are is some guy who plays a video game to find something. And then you watch a cutscene of other people finding it.

I am mixed on Brotherhood. I think it played the best (throwing heavy weapons and just eviscerating people with kill chains felt great) and had the best mission variety in the series, but I found Rome boring and didn't care for the story at all.

Mutliplayer was the fucking best though, and it was the reason I was even interested in brotherhood in the first place.

I've only seen the third scene,
I assume the next one is after seq 6?
but even if it's short a lot more happened in those three minutes than in all of Unity. I do hope that we can get an actual modern day protagonist though. "You are the character" doesn't really do it for me.

There are about 5-6 scenes each one is around 1-2 minutes. I fucking despise this modern day. I have no interaction with the world at all, I am just watching cutscenes. Screw the writer who thought this was a good idea.

Also in terms of core plot, it barely moves anything forward. Its incredibly annoying.

Holy crap, the Steampunk gear is the best gear in the game, or at least it can replace the current high end gear you already have. Except the pistol and knuckles, it's the best there.

Agreed. Playing Unity for the last month and it feels far closer to the earlier AC games with many of the core changes. Many of the long-running issues still stand though, many not exclusive to this entry.

I wonder if the PS-"exclusive" DLC will be rolled into the Gold Edition of the PC version. That's been the case since 3 and the Benedict Arnold missions, although I don't think there was any such partnership for Unity in the end, probably due to time constraints.

I actually like both Evie and Jacob. They both play off of each other really well and it would be boring if it was just the one of them. I'd like to see this in future AC games, two characters to switch between.

I've been switching between the two characters every hour while I'm taking over districts. Only Westminister to go and I'm still on sequence 4.

So pleased I picked this up! Been really enjoyable. So much better than Unity. Still has kinks and quirks but no more than the average AAA game.

Well, after a couple hours or so, my Evie is sitting pretty at level 6. And the entire map is cleared from threat- the funny thing about map-clearing is sometimes it feels like a repetitive grind. But I actually didn't mind it much here, mainly because for the first time in forever I felt like I actually had to employ some fun stealth to get through higher level bounties. I mean, for the templar hunts/gang strongholds/child liberations, knowing that a headshot from a knife is all powerful is pretty hilarious. Pop on over, throw a knife or ten, and a zone I probably shouldn't be entering is cleared. But for bounties, I had to use some really fun and creative strategies to get people start running into the streets alone- poison darts, smoke bombs, inciting fights with Rooks, everything.

I'm only at Sequence 4, but I kept feeling this incessant need to clear the map before continuing on. I think artificially raising the difficulty of certain enemies for zones is kind of a cheap way to keep you on your guard, but it does allow for some welcome upgrades and a real sense of progression as you unlock more skills, schematics for gear and weapons. I'm not one on difficulty in an Assassin's Creed game- even the arbitrary objectives the game sets for extra XP feels like the developers are asking me to play it a certain way, so I don't try to attain them unless it's some fancy kill animation or something. This definitely has solved the issue of being a one person killing machine, as I actually find myself playing as Evie, needing to grapple out of dicey situations a lot.

But I'm loving it. And I do feel like it's the best Assasin's Creed game since 2 (which will always be my favorite). I'm not set on London being the best city to traverse, but with the grappling hook, carriages, and peacefully riding on boats, I've been loving it. The characters have fun personalities, and after 15 hours or so, I feel like I'm starting to explore and collect. Which I love in these games. I can't wait to unlock every upgrade too- some of them make combat brutal and hilarious.

Kudos to this team. I'm also in the minority that's loved every title (minus the slog of Revelations, though I think Constantinople is my favorite city they've done and the restrictions placed on movement based on clothing in Liberation). It's been a ton of fun!

Streamlining and getting back to the core of AC(specifically 1 right down to Arno's costume design), was kinda the point of Unity, but in some aspects it went too far back, like only being able to kill targets with the hidden blade despite it being planned that we could kill or targets with different weapons like the phantom blade. Or hand to hand combat removal and whistling. They were super ambitious with the co-op and customization and all that new tech for rendering Paris. If only they could've gotten a huge delay like Arkham Knight.

Unity had a MS marketing deal, and they didn't make any exclusive dlc, Syndicate is "back on track" in that regard.

Yeah, I seemed to recall reading an article published during last year's E3 that mentioned exclusive content, however attempts to find it again have failed, so I assume my original search erroneously returned a piece of news from E3 2015.

I am torn here... I never played Unity because of all the crap that was going on with it and I really havent followed up on Syndicate.

From the opinions going around it seems to be a better game, but does it warrant a purchase from a guy who loved AC2 and Brotherhood? Does Syndicate have an interesting mission structure or is it just recycling old missions from previous games? Is the world immersive enough?

I also understand that this game looks graphically worse than Unity (with a proper framerate though). Is the difference very apparent, especially in terms of IQ?

Thanks GAF.

I understand the hate for it at launch because it was broken but, playing the PC version a year later, and I'm kind of stunned that Unity doesn't get a better reception from people LTTP. I think they fix a lot of the design issues from earlier in the series, especially the arbitrary fail states, and the assassinations are the best in the series though I haven't played Syndicate.

The Multiplayer debut was so fucking rad and then they ruined it almost instantly with all the bullshit currencies and unlockables and too many modes.

You know how cinematic that Notre Dame assassination mission was? Every assassination mission is now like that.

The game is basically a next gen AC:Brotherhood. They improved on Unity's foundation, overhauled things like combat, and brought back features that players loved while also introducing some new gameplay elements that change up the way you play. And two likeable protagonists. Yes the graphics, (on console) aren't as good as Unity and it can be noticeable in some scenes but they hold up quite well, Westminster for instance is super pretty. And like any AC game they nailed the atmosphere.

If you liked 2 and Brotherhood, I think you'll like Syndicate. It doesn't do a whole lot new, but it's really solid Assassins Creed and reminded me of those two games the most.
