Assassin's Creed Unity - Review Thread

Played about two hours last night and saw since serious jank, but nothing I can't live with. My son and I still had a blast.

The city, the voice acting, the story thus far all are awesome.

My only serious problem right now is the locked content, specifically the chests. That is going to cause my OCD some real heartache.

Yeah this isn't the game's fault, you just have too many dust bunnies in your console's fan. Just grab a can of compressed air and blow those suckers out. If you're not familiar with dust bunnies they look like this:

Nightmare inducing! Wtf is this, where did this meme come from?

Well, I played Unity PS4 last night for about six hours, and I'm very disappointed.

I only saw TWO FUCKING GLITCHES in all that time. One was a guy stuck on a doorway and twitching, the other was when I noticed I was in that chapel with the infamous stained glass window. There was absolutely no reason to climb on it, and I never would have bothered if I hadn't seen the video yesterday. But sure enough when I climbed it the frame rate went to hell.

I did notice some pop-in in the distance when I remembered to look for it. I kept an eye out for NPC models blatantly changing as I got closer. Never noticed a single example of that. No inside out nightmare faces. No NPCs floating along the ground. No falling through the floor. No parkour not working as I expected it should. All in all it just seems to be what I'd expect from a new gen AC. Very, very disappointed! Hopefully I have better luck tonight.

You were playing Black Flag by mistake. Easily done. :)

The fuck are you talking about? "going around trolling GAF with driveby posts", link me two posts of mine where I troll anyone. You seem to be mistaken me for someone else.

I was trying to keep it lighthearted, which apparantly was an error in judgement.

*gasp*

How could you.

I just sold the game. The Notre-Dame Assassination mission was the last nail in the coffin. It ran nothing like the demo shown earlier this year. Framerate was all over the place.

I'm extremely disappointed. I pre-ordered the game since E3 too, and it was my most anticipated game of the year.

This is my first and last pre-order from Ubisoft.

That would never happen. AC4 is the only AC I played once and will never replay again. Trading in awesome huge explorable cities for boring pirate ship bullshit? Naw thanks.

the boring pirate ship bullshit was the only good part of black flag... watching terrible failed parkour for every inch of the cities kept me out of most of them.... just tedious to watch and experience like 5 animations just to climb a two story building...

People should be returning it for full price, don't trade or sell privately. This can be considered a defective product.

So I must say I was disappointed to notice the pop-ins during my first mission with Arno. Other than that, the framerate issue hasn't proved itself to be a game breaker to me (not a 60 or bust type of guy). I am loving the new descending abilities, visuals overall, less super-powered combat tactics and a renewed importance to open world stealth (not just running from one patch of tall grass to the other).

I do find it funny seeing sooo many comments stating that a game this "broken" performance-wise doesn't deserve a 7 or 8. What weight should this carry? Wasn't the opposite the debate back when Destiny releases? A technically superior/sound game with perceived lack of story or evolving content not worthy of a 7 or 8?

I'm not saying it should be an 8+ game, but it is certainly not a bad -5 game.

Yes, I know a lot of people went apeshit about getting to play pirate in AC4. I wasn't one of them.

Yeah glitches lower enjoyment, but unlike what Gaf usually says, it far from renders it bad or even unplayable. A buggy game can still be a really great game (e.g. Fallout 3). Now, a derivative story or game mechanics, that almost categorically means it can't score high to me.

No way any major retailers are going to refund an opened game. Maybe if things get bad enough Amazon will issue refunds like they did for Sim City, but thats pretty unlikely?

retailers do replace games if you claim it doesn't work correct? what's stopping people from getting an unopened replacement and taking that one back?

It's sad that only Joystiq had the stones to a slap a 5 on this technical mess of a game.

But maybe GB will come in with a 2/5.

Based on Alex's reaction to it on the recent Bombin' in the A.M., I'm expecting 3/5.

This game runs nearly without fault on my rig with a i7 and 970 GTX (and so it should). It looks incredible consistently. It makes me think that this was always their target and they were expecting better processors in this generation.

Development probably started way before the final spec was announced and when the processors were found to be weak in the 8th Gen, they tried to dial it back but let their ego and ambition get in the way of delivering a consistent frame rate and clean IQ.

Its a real shame. I really wanted to play with my friends on co-op on the PS4...

I think you're right. I remember reading an article where it was said that initial development on Unity began after Brotherhood's development was wrapped up.

I've also read elsewhere that the weak processors in the final consoles came as a surprise and disappointment to some developers.

Who will take this back unopened without a receipt? I got it with the buy 2 get one free but they will only give me $40 for it. All the bugs and shit made me not even want to play it.

My review:

PROS
- if you approach the bar in the Café Théâtre you can drink coffee. For free
- If you walk up to the balcony of Arno's room you casually lean and enjoy the view

CONS
- You can't pet dogs or feed chickens anymore

8/10

8/10 ;) i laughed. people are getting way revved up in these threads.

Aren't Gamespot and Metacritic both owned by CBS Interactive? How could Metacritic possibly not be presenting Gamespot's score? It's practically the first score they should start with!
that picture is stupid. there is no ps4 score at metacritic because the ps4 version was never officially reviewed by gamespot, the xbox one version was(which is represented on metacritic)

Not really. I'm using a GTX 980 in a Falcon Northwest Tiki.

Something's wrong with your hardware, then. There's no way you have to drop to 720p to get smooth performance with a system like than, unless smooth performance for you means 100+ FPS or something.

I thought after AC Revelations Ubisoft was done with.....Bomb.....crafting?

Bwhahaha!!

Bravo mate! Bravo! That gave me a good chuckle.

Also I'm just going by what happened in 2012 when AC3 disappointed (well at least it was functional), but Far Cry 3 ended up being really good.

Should we make the same bet for Far Cry 4, or due Ubisoft's stellar year so far just write it off?

Well so far it's been one of the best games in the series for me.

The bugs are funny though.

Was walking behind this lady who dropped right through the ground!

I'm honestly not surprised. Everything released about this game since it was announced was underwhelming. Next year's AC will benefit from lessons learned and more time with the current gen hardware. I'm skipping this year.

The series could do with a rest for a couple of years imo.

Yeah fuck this. Not gonna redeem the code that came with my Xbone. I honestly don't even wanna ask for money for this. Quote if you actually wanna redeem and play this thing. Go fuck yourself Ubisoft.

So Kotaku says the missions are boring

Gameinformer says the missions are engaging

...Not sure who to trust here.
That's the thing. You can't know for sure until you play a game for yourself.

They intentionally go against the general opinion with "controversial" review to get clicks.

Hahahahahaha. I love when people say this about the website with the controversial review-du-jour. Be it IGN, Polygon, whatever.

That seems like the most boneheaded strategy ever, in the long term.
If you do this, people are quickly going to figure you out and you will be ignored en-masse.

Looks like somme people will not have their metacritic bonus.
Damn right. And the industry is better for it.
Those shouldn't even exist.

The "bu-bu-but it's his opinion!" responses by the author and the editors are hilarious.
Who fuckin' cares? Game reviews are one person's opinion (or on USGamer and a few other sites, sometimes 2 writers' opinions).

At the end of the day, whatever the reviews say:
Go fuck yourself Ubisoft.
^ This right here is how I feel.

I don't need no review to figure this out for myself.

Yes, I know a lot of people went apeshit about getting to play pirate in AC4. I wasn't one of them.

Well i wouldn't go apeshit over anything in asscreed but I'm just saying the water and ships were kind of cool looking at least. The parkour is bad and the immersion breaking parts where you literally just walk around an office building... Omg most boring missions in any game ever.
I borrowed it from a friend. Never bought any asscreed and won't start now.

This dude isn't playing around.

Good on you. I'm done with Ubisoft too.

Come on, guys. Yes, there are technical faults, parity issues and microtransactions, but it's a solid game underneath.
No doubt. If they patch it sufficiently on consoles might consider it but not before.if they patch it on PC and drop Uplay I might consider it but not before.

One thing though, I won't give them anywhere near full price or this.

The gloal of a game maker is to make a game people like to play. Not to make an assassin's creed game. AC:BF is very fun, so they should be refining those ideas even further rather than moving away from it.

First-of-all, you have Assassins' Creed Rogue which is there to give you that sweet Black Flag withdrawal fix. It is probably coming to PC and maybe next-gen soon as well, no way Ubisoft will pass an opportunity to make some easy cash.

Second-of-all, I agree with the premise, but disagree with the conclusion. The game is called Assassins' Creed. A lot of people believe that the series peaked with AC2/Brotherhood, which represented the best the game mechanics expected from the series. Black Flag was fun, but the main character is barely an assassin, its funnest parts are not assassinations and stealth, it's swashbuckling and fort-capturing..

Ubisoft is striving to make the games the consumers want. They should take note that people enjoyed the pirate theme and expand on it, but not in the context of Assassins' Creed series. You can make so much more with a pirate game if you disconnect it from the franchise, you can remove all the assassinations and lore baggage, get out the game which will make you feel like a true pirate, focus on things like ship upgrades, your pirate den etc.

Assassins' Creed proper was wise to return and try to fix the basics of what it is to be assassin. In Unity they worked on stealth, crowds, assassinations. They also brought back the monumental buildings you had to scale and core gameplay elements which defined the series. Personally, I think it's quite commendable, and seeing that they didn't quite succeed here, means there are more improvements to be made with the core formula.

Best review

AC Unity is true next-gen. In fact, it is SO next-gen that it isn't even finished yet! I like to be on the cutting edge and I appreciate that Ubisoft is making games that it is still making, even weeks after you've beaten them.

I also love the forced integration with an app as well as a website. How that works is that you sign in with your uplay account to experience so many error messages that last gen could never display on screen at one time.

The game itself (no spoilers) centers around Arno, an Assasin in search of locked chests that require a cell phone game with micro transactions to open. You level him up by "hacking" into your bank account to drain real money at 60 FPS. The rest of the game runs at a solid 12 FPS which is TWICE as cinematic as a movie... No small feat! Once you've completed "playing" a website on your computer, Arno is finally ready to fall through the ground and enter a white abyss... The core challenge of the game, these moments where you simply fall into the sky that accurately existed under 1700's Paris, are some of the most nail-biting moments in any game ever made... Will the game crash? Will you have to hard reset your console? Results are random, so it will always be a surprise!

Many people just won't "get" this evolution of Assassin's Creed and should spend their time opening up a history book instead. It is there they could read up on Paris' floating people and long battle with pop-in. Even today, many Parisians only exist after you've already walked past them. It is these small details that Ubisoft has nailed and they deserve applause with tons of random audio pops just as you'd hear in the game's cinematics.

After playing this gem, I've decided to fly to Montreal tomorrow to begin playing 2018's Assassin's Creed 9. Unity's only shortcoming was that it was a little TOO finished, so I am hoping the Ubisoft guys will let me plug my controller into a broken vending machine in their studio that simply eats dollars that I put into it without delivering.
