Astro Bot |OT| Robot in disguises

the new speedrun level is out... and damn, getting a good time here is annoying with the current optimal strat.

you need to use a glitch on a seal that shoots you up... but if you aren't positioned correctly it won't shoot you up high enough to get the shortcut.

Yeah... Astrobot is not nearly popular enough to piece out levels like this. It would be better if it was every couple of days.

the issue is that there are only 6 of them. if they had like 20 or so, then a new one ever 2 or 3 days would be doable. but the way it is, they have to space it out I guess...

37.384 is the best I can do currently on the new speed run level. I can't get that seal to give me a boost right now so it feels like im maxed on the current route til I can consistantly make that happen. I should easily drop into the 36s and possibly lower once I can.

the seal glitch is annoying for sure.
you have to hit it with the jetpack while flying over to it, and just as the animation of the seal starts you have to press and hold jump.

depending on positioning and timing it will shoot you high enough, or not high enough...

Got 36.840 after like 2 hours lol. That probably will not stay in the top 1000 by the end of the weekend at this pace. Didn't take the best route at the beginning so there's room for improvement. Seal is still a problem for me although im getting a little better at the timing.

Unless there's going to be (paid?) DLC at the end of the 5 weeks I don't see why they are doing this.

My time keeps getting reset to my previous time after beating it😡. Leaderboard not updating my time.

EDIT: It finally updated. My new time(36.399) may not still be enough to stay in the top 1000 for the weekend lol.

The level design was flawless imo, but I agree with you that it needs a more cohesive world, instead of just references to PlayStation. Word building and Lore would be a start, with text dialogue, kinda like what Mario does
I feel like they are really close to beating Nintendo at their own game. The only issue I have is the lack of any continuity with its element other than PlayStation history. Mario has Goombas, Koopas etc, Donkey Kong Country has the Kremlings. I just don't find the random robots and aliens interesting. Even the bosses are just completely random from a gorilla to a Lizard. Even though Mario games have similar level variety from deserts to Ice and lava worlds there is still some cohesion between these areas as if they exist in the same space. In this way, Little Big Planet is probably better in this regards and Ratchet etc. They should give Asobi Jak and Daxter. The world is already there, just needs to the creativity and they have that.

The extra levels are the icing on the cake for me. The game was almost perfect as is and didn't need any new content so the fact they are adding a new level each weeks is fine. It's not a live service game.

I also don't believe it needs any back story or lore or any shit that can get in the way of the gameplay. That's the best part for me - raw gameplay, basically no cutscenes or boring tutorials to get in your way. It's 100% gameplay.

Final galaxy and only 3 PS symbols (X) levels left.

Been loving it!

But it’s no longer a 10 for me. Halfway through it there are no new mechanics introduced and it really lacks any type of challenge in the main levels. I’m just plowing through everything. Makes replaying a level to find a bot or puzzle piece feel like a chore.

The PS symbols levels on the other hand are extremely difficult. Some are challenging and fun, some are pure frustration and no fun at all.

The kids still love seeing me play though. Great family time game. 👌

Got off work today and went straight into tackling To The Beat.
The trick was at the end figuring out the timing of the rockets…and breathing.

Huh, in Spring Loaded Run the second bot is yet again a Helldiver?

Second bot appears to be 55 seconds. My first attempt I got just under that.

What time is it?

And the second bot for the fourth speed run challenge will be a Helldiver so that you'll end up with a full Helldiver squad in the hub.

I love Astro Bot but these speed run stages are not all that satisfying but I cant complain since they are free.

But honestly I want proper level and I wouldn't mind it would cost money.

I had speculated that they did the piecemealing because they are going to announce paid DLC at the end of the 5 weeks. So we will see.

Nariko is not really what I expected, but if it makes fans happy, I can't complain.
I hope the next one is an old character I actually want, though. I legit can't believe Badman didn't make the cut in Astro Bot; it's a VERY iconic character among Sony games (in Japan at least).

1.5M sales for this seems pretty good and should be one that keeps ticking over especially into holiday period. Not had time for it myself but that's probably when I'll get around to it.

Rising Heat is pretty hard too. I am not so good with the monkey and it's easy to get stuck. Might actually take some effort to get the second bot.

The times you get between having controller tilt assist off vs on is quite dramatic. Also turned off trigger effect for this. I was barely beating the birds when I had controller tilt assist off. My total time overall is 3.17.092. I can lower that even further by taking the last two speed runs(Spring-Loaded Run and Helium Heights) before Rising Heat more seriously than I did previously. I didn't really try on those like I did the first two.

Here's to hoping we can eventually get dlc levels like the main part of the game instead of just speed runs(even though I would welcome more of them). Even if that means having to charge a little for it.

EDIT: Improved on the Rising Heat level. Overall time is now 03:11.034.

Wanted to be there much earlier but life got in the way. Picked up the game this weekend and haven't been able to put it down, it's so much fun! Up to the snake system and the new powerups are awesome (especially froggy hands and mouse). Loving the levels after you beat the boss, it feels like a victory lap and does a great job mimicking the general gameplay, in a simplified way.

I'm making a lot of progress now and am sad it will be over so soon, but I can tell the replayability will be amazing - I will certainly be revisiting this one day.

I'd like to dip back into this over Christmas and I have a stupid question -

How do I access the DLC? Does it only unlock after I've finished the main game? Currently I haven't even finished the second planet.

I'm playing it right now and I gotta say: Wow, what a game! Incredibly imaginative and joyous even for a hardened gaming veteran like me. The design and graphics makes me take in the scenery on every level. On one planet the rain drops falling made up the DOXO symbols which was a very cool detail. I also love most of the music and the variants of the main theme. They feel more memorable to me than the ones in Super Mario Odyssey.

I'd say that they don't yet compete with Nintendo and Mario on their best day, but there are some Mario games that Astro Bot easily beats in terms of fun. like Super Mario Sunshine. An analogy to what's happening would be the time when Pixar were the unthreatened kings of CGI animated movies, but Dreamworks and Blue Sky started releasing their animated movies that quickly caught up and even started surpassing Pixar in some regards. Competition is always good so I hope Nintendo pays attention and realizes that they too could become Pixar if they'd get lazy. There was a time when every single Pixar film was something to look forward to and you always knew that you'd get top notch entertainment. That is, until they started to become more and more mediocre which was insane in and of itself. I think that if Sony wants to really compete with Mario then Astro Bot needs to stop relying so much on Playstation IP member-berries and start creating its own interesting worlds and characters. The developers and artists are clearly very talented and probably could create an amazing new platform-adventurer IP if they wanted.

Playing this game it reminded me of how much I loved Ape Escape and other classic 3D platform game of the past. I hope this makes Sony invest in studios that can bring those IPs to the modern era and stop wasting money on nonsense like Concord. A new Ape Escape or Sly Cooper doesn't have to be AAA and could probably give gamers like me the feeling that there are fun exclusives coming on the horizon. Perhaps PS6 will be the gen when the PS1 and PS2 era comes back.
