(Aug 2-11) The Intenational 2013 DOTA2 championships [Team USA Playing!]

HYPED!

Looks like I won't be sleeping much for this upcoming week, considering the games will only start at around midnight for me.

As somebody who is interested in getting into Dota when/if I get a new PC and knows nothing aside from what was shown in the recent Giantbomb quicklook, will the play be too high-level and confusing for me to find entertaining? I quite enjoyed watching the Starcraft 2 tournament last year even as a complete novice, if that provides any indication :)

As someone who's watched 5 years of Starcraft, and only know MOBAs pretty much by proxy until 3 weeks ago, I can tell you that playing about 30 human games it has drastically altered my opinion of DOTA (LoL is way more forgiving and there is less to worry about). I suggest you play a few matches and watch a few videos to understand exactly how important a ton of the subtleties are.

Some of the really amazing plays will probably go over your head without knowing some of the basic stuff BUT it's a great way to get introduced to Dota and you get to see the best teams in the world compete so expect some really awesome matches...

So I would say; GO WATCH IT!

An example of an amazing play that's very hard to understand for people new to dota (but amazing non-the-less);

Explanation from Shira on page 2:
Even I don't know exactly what happened, the jist of it is
- Navi is pushing bottom lane
- iG smoke/become invisible for a wrap around gank
- iG Naga uses Song (to stop all Navi)
- Dark Seer vaccuums them so all Navi are close together, misses Juggernaut
- Song is dropped
- Ravage is used by iG
- Enigma BKB activated/Juggernaut spins (Both provide spell immunity for Navi)
- Blackhole activated by Navi Enigma(stops iG from moving)
- Rubick steals ravage
- Rubik ravages (Navi creates massive damage from spin/blackhole/ravage)
- Everyone dead except Lina
- They hunt down Lina

The amazing part is how they pulled it off so quickly and perfectly. If the enigma waited a microsecond longer for BKB Navi would have been less effective.

When you start, you will be matched with newbies too so you don't get owned most of the time. Learning it takes huge amount of patience and time but it's a very fun and rewarding game. You have to be thick-skinned with all the trash talking. It will disappear as your skill goes up. Even if you have hundreds of hours invested into the game, you may still learn something new as the dynamic of the game changes a lot as well as the balance of heroes.

You may want to pick 1 newbie-friendly hero first and master his/her basics and try a build and play a number of matches. There are many guides (both ingame and outside) for you to follow so you will at least have a bit of sense on the nature of your hero and its skills. If you're still worried, play bot matches first. Most of the players on bot matches are more friendly.

:)

I'd argue that THE PLAY is horrible for someone new to understand. Any well coordinated team fight is a better place to explain what happened.

So what kind of rewards do people get for watching games?

If you have the TI3 courier, it gets upgraded at certain amount of "games viewed" with a special effect.

And you have item drops at key moments during the match.
- First blood
- Double,multi,ultra,rampage killing sprees
- Stealing of the Aegis
- Etc.

Very cool, so I have to go through the "Watch" tab and do it there? In 12 hours that is.

PATIENCE FROM ZHOU!

The best thing is that Dendi reaction and the 5 IG players don't even react at all.

You can either do it through the watch tab or link your steam account to your twitch.tv account and watch it through there.
Btw the courier also get's "views" from the TI3 qualifiers (East and West) which are still available on the watch tab ---> Tournaments ---> East/West qualifiers.

So what are peoples thoughts on the wildcard match? Quantic or Rattlesnake?
Dota lounge betting is favouring quantic but I find the people on there tend to favour western teams over eastern. Bit hard to tell cause both teams haven't really played much lately as I guess they've been in boot camp mode.

Question about item drops:

Last year, didn't you have to buy a team's pennant in order to be able to receive drops? Is that the same this year, or do I just have to tune in via twitch/be an in-game spectator to get something?

Can't wait to get zero drops.

It should be interesting to see if iG can repeat. With all the changes on teams this year I think it might be unpredictable.

I got on monday :) Im only there for the main event :)

You'll be there for the creator panels??
Awesome! Congrats and have fun!

I'm hoping Quantic, because I want to see Goblak pull some crazy ass drafts and surprise us during TI3.

Apparently you don't have to have the pennants anymore to get drops. (pennants just increase drop chance????)

How big of a chance does Rattlesnake have to win against Quantic? I'm not too familiar with them but it seems like the community is heavily favouring Quantic.

Quantic have been really impressive, I though they were fantastic in the qualifiers. If you asked me this a month or 2 back I'd say Rattlesnake had them covered but I've really taken a liking to Quantic's style and I'll be hoping they get through.

Rattlesnake are definitely a good side though, they are definitely worthy of being there and could pull off some good upsets if they get past Quantic. Really even field at this year's tournament (straddling that fence pretty hard, but if I had to bet my precious rares I'd go Quantic)

Wildcard starts at 4AM for me... really want to catch the Solo playoffs though so I might try and wake up for that.

Going to pump some of these games out to the big screen. Treat this as an event. Popcorn, nachos, the works.

I love live DOTER.
