August 2008 NPD Results

I wasn't.. :p
All I said was:

yes you were this is what you quoted.

GT3 was the PS2's first real killer app, and blew everything else away graphically. It also sold 10 million+. GOW was a very late title though, people already had the console.

and then you said

At the same time, GT4 sold less than '3'

So you were comparing America sales, with the ones you quoted, which are worldwide sales, at least that's the impression I got....

You either need to overhaul the basic to fit Wii. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008.
Or go the NBA Jam/NFL Blitz route.

Madden type could work but to make it great you need to overhaul it. Make passing pointer based and the camera is 1st person or closer over the shoulder 3rd. So much more rewarding to see the open guy and quickly zip over to him and make the throw right before you get hit.
Hm, I'm not sure they should even try to go after the traditional sports gamers market. It seems like these guys are just not interested in the Wii to such an extent. It might just be a case of the wrong game on the wrong platform, like VP on 360 or something.

otoh, EA can not ignore Wii's massive userbase, they just can't. *sigh* I dunno. It's a tough call to make.

i can tell you that microsoft are actually selling LESS than they were before. according to my insider at MS x360 sales actually dropped 80% for the 2 weeks leading up to the price drop and even then the price drop only boosted sales up to %40 for the first week before dropping down to 15%.

they are expecting numbers to be less than 100k.

I don't think you are right, people want GT, and is still huge and will be huge, GT5 prologue it's almost (if not) at 2.4 millions worldwide.
That's what I said in the original post..
It still going to sell millions..no matter what..
But moving consoles and being the "saving grace" that many are hoping to be, for the PS3..is really hard to tell.

I have to wonder, will all the consoles sell out this Christmas?

On the one hand, you have Gears 2, Fable 2, and Lips all in one time frame. On the other, you have the casuals who want everything Wii. And finally you have R2, LBP, Motorstorm 2, and Socom.

I have a hard time believing these consoles will sit on store shelves. Its sell out city for most of them.

Hell PS2 is even getting a price cut on Okami, Disagaea, and a release KH- Com+.

Not possible: it comes with a game (5, if you're on Ebay).

...and if you were serious: No. The Wii has the highest software sales of any console in NPD history at this point.

Damn. More than the PS2?

Gran Turismo is a console mover for sure. Does it have the same status now as it did in the time of GT3? I doubt it. It will be late into the console's life, and then there's the wii and the 360, etc

But it is a console mover, GT is huge.

God of War though, not really. It sold 2 million + (Gow2) in a 120 million userbase. It's far from being the heavy hitter that some people paint it to be.

cool, thanks.
It just doesn't seem they will play the same role, though, for a number of factors. They will sell loads, sure, but will not be pulling these numbers. GOW3 might be an exception

They are all very well positioned. The only one with shit software is Wii, but I don't see that being an impediment to Nintendo. This holiday season will be huge for all consoles.

Everyone trolling PS3 sales would probably do well to keep in mind that the 360 barely outsold a console that is more expensive than it in a month where Sony didn't have as many units on shelves and is still ramping up production of the new 80GB model and preparing for the 160GB bundle. All in all - including software sales - it was a pretty weak month in general for video games.

Sorry to give you the wrong impression then..
I wasn't quoting the actual sales, but the comment about GT3 being the killer app..it moved consoles, heck it was even bundled with the PS2..close to the release..

lowrider007

Licorice-flavoured booze?
PS2 still hanging in there, always surprises me, a 10 year old console only 50 thousand behind 360 and 40 thousand behind PS3, seems a real shame that Sony or third-party developers are not really continuing to make dedicated PS2 games, considering how big the user base is even shovel-ware will make $$$'s.

Wow. At least the 360 has the upcoming price drop as a fallback. What's the PS3s excuse? :lol

Think its safe to say it won't be outselling the 360 for the rest of 08.

EA should advertise. If they want casuals to buy the game stop putting out commercials that suggest the game is only coming for 360.

Wow 10k, does Japan numbers not beat that?

I'm just messing around. I thought I'd get in on Drinky's little Gamecube thing and when someone said the PS3 didn't have a handle I couldn't help myself.

If it's any consolation I own all three current gen systems and love them all equally.

Wow @ the PS3 numbers.

It seems people really just bought it for MGS4. :(
Do you mean the PS3 software sale? If so, if you take away the Madden 09 and Soul Calibur 4 numbers for August, then you will have 850k software sales of other PS3 games, atleast according to Sony's press release (if i understood it correcly) :

PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) continued to generate impressive sales in August 2008, with 185,353 hardware units sold. From January to August 2008, more than 2 million PS3s have been sold in the U.S., representing a year-to-date hardware sales growth of more than 92%. Software sales were also strong for PS3, with 1.6 million units sold, representing a year-over-year growth of 92%.
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=12762680&postcount=377

1.6 million in total software sales for August
- 643k for Madden 09
- 107k for Soul Calibur 4
--------------------------------
= 850k remaining
--------------------------------
--------------------------------

I dont know if that is a good, an average or a bad number though, but atleast some PS3 software were sold, so it might be that people bought a PS3 for other games than just MGS4, if that is what you ment though :)

I think the best part of this thread is the desperation of the X360 fanboys crying tears of joy over a 10k lead on the PS3.

I was talking about the hardware sales. I thought the 480k MGS4 peak would cut to like 200-250k maybe. Now 185k is lower than i expected.

You can spin that either way. I think the software sales are what truly stand out to me, the games I wanted in the top 10 (Metal Gear 4, Tales of Vesperia) aren't anywhere to be seen. The prediction last month before NPD that the Xbox 360 would outsell PS3 by a huge margin is a reality this month. I think consumers saw the cheaper price point and bought into it.

It doesn't really matter though, I'm still eating crow. The 360 outsold the PS3 this month. Looking back, it damn well should have. It had a price drop and two new exclusive games debuting (ToV, and TH).

Ah ok, like that, then i missunderstood you, sorry.

Ye, the PS3 hardware sale has indeed dropped quite a bit since the month that Metal Gear Solid 4 was launched, thats true, and it seems that many people bought the PS3 for MGS4, i agree to that :)

Tiger Woods Wii didn't bomb. Don't be an idiot.
Wii Madden was outsold by PS3 Madden ~3 to 1 in it's first month, but tied it in the next month. It had longer legs than the other versions. (I still don't expect 09 Wii to compete with the HD versions in overall sales.)
So Metacritic represents all gamers now?
Wow, you ARE an idiot.
I was kinda looking for a real answer rather than a poor joke, but my point was that you cannot prove it.

You're basing Madden 08 legs on 2 NPD months? What are the numbers for Madden 08 second month across all platforms?

My store had 80GB units all month. Must have been other areas.

I still can't believe Sony forgot what made the ps2 successful-consistent branding, top notch exclusives, aggressive price cuts, and key 1st party games--GT, Minna no Golf, God of War.

I hope they can eek out some success this generation on the console side.

There's a good chance Mario Kart will out sell GTA4 in the end
GTA IV = 4.8 million
Mario Kart Wii = 2,737,700

This month's differential = 239,700

Or were you talking worldwide?

I think thats because there were absolutely no exclusives for the PS3 in August that would have people buy a PS3 for - except for Disgaea 3 which has a very niche audience.

The 360 on the other hand has two big exclusives - one being possibly the best RPG on the Wii/PS3/360 era (Tales of Vesperia) - even if not a big seller - but a big RPG for RPG gamers, and Too Human (for better or worse) which was hyped enough to sell a decent number for such mediocre scores everywhere.

I'm just curious about something. does anybody know if the Madden Wii sales make money for EA? I mean everyone is making fun of that number but to me it seems like most companies wish their games would sell that much. Obviously the wii version would cost less to make than the HD versions so I really can't see them losing money on that game considering the budget (especially since they don't need to advertise it seperately)

The top selling version is the 360 version, and that had 2 million first month (NPD), 1 million the second, and then dissapeared of the top 10.

I was hoping to see Vesperia in the top 10. I don't want to believe that JRPGs are a dying genre :(.

Why would a bombing franchise entry from a series that pretty much always sells <50k in the US indicate that JRPGs are dying?

I honestly don't believe that all 3+ million people who buy Madden every year are crazy statheads who freak out about using the game's advanced features, playing online leagues, etc. Plenty of these people are just buying it to get stoned and laugh at how bad the Bills are this year. Madden Wii really should be an attractive purchase for some of these people.

My current operating theory is that the only people who buy Madden for Wii are people who don't own an HD system or a PS2. Every year more PS2 sales turn into 360 or PS3 sales, but the Wii never picks anyone up because EA's marketing of the Wii version is just that bad.

And why <50k? Hasn't Abyss sold like 150k?

I'm not spinning anything. Microsoft put the 20GB 360s on clearance and moved them out. Sony is trying to get those new 80GB PS3s out and they had a lapse of inventory on the 40GB model in its place. It's not really a surprise to me that the 360 outsold the PS3 when you factor these two things in. With how many PSN games came out for the PS3 in August I forgot all about their real sort of lack of new retail titles hitting so that's probably a factor as well. Anyway I don't think that around 15,000 more units is a "huge margin" when we're talking about close to 200,000 units for each. I stand by what I said. Aside from Madden sales everything else didn't do great. August was overall a pretty slow month. Even the Wii usually sells more than it sold this month when there's supply in stock.

Well, the HD versions sold nearly 1.65 million, the Wii version did 110K. So, umm, unless the Wii version was 16.5x cheaper to make, i'm not sure how much money that brought them.

Will Mario Kart sell that?

The 360 didn't have a price drop last month, it took affect a few days ago and will be counted towards next months NPD.
