Decided to watch a PWG show and wanted to give a little recap on each match, sorry for no flashy gifs or fancy pictures. I did watch this show once when it was first released but that was 8 year ago so I thought why not revisit it.
I will say it is hard to go from watching a boatload of 90s AJPW to then watching indy wrestling in a promotion that at the time, solely existed for the laughs and to not take itself too seriously.
PWG - Beyond The Thunderdome (March 18 2006)
1) Bino Gambino, Alex Koslov & Top Gun Talwar vs. Disco Machine, Nemesis & Ronin.
Match thoughts: Standard PWG 6 man tag affair with plenty of moves for the sake of it and a wide array of botches. Ronin beat up his team mates after the match as did Koslov with his team, Ronin scored the victory so why he turned on his team made no sense.
2) Mr. Excitement vs. TJ Perkins
Match thoughts: Lots of holds and counter wrestling here, which was honestly nice to see. Ive always appreciated how seriously TJ takes his wrestling but he is lacking in the charisma department. The moment Mr Excitement went for the laughs, TJ simply left the ring and just waited for the moment to pass then got back in. The match was totally fine and both tried to do something more akin to a standard match and I enjoyed it for what it was.
3) Chris Bosh & Scott Lost vs. El Generico & Quicksliver (No.1 Contenders Match)
Match thoughts: Now thiswas an exciting tag match with everyone working hard and keeping it all very focused. Plenty of actual team work especially with Lost and Bosh heeling it up, plenty of big moves and well earned spots plus they built up the finish quite well resulting in the match being truly entertaining from beginning to end. There was an energy and urgency about the match that worked perfectly making it all flow really well. Easily the best match of the card so far and Im not sure if it will be topped, crowd really enjoyed themselves too which did add quite a bit.
4) B-Boy vs. Kevin Steen (No.1 Contenders Match)
Match thoughts: They start the match by trading holds and some guy yells boring, so both B-Boy and Steen stop the match to get the crowd to turn on the guy. That was an unusual sight to say the least. The match itself was just ok, they did plenty thats for sure yet it suffered greatly as they flipped so frequently who was in control that it was hard to get behind either man. The final few minutes were the highlight of the match and the finish was totally not what I was expecting with B-Boy going over with a roll up.
5) Human Tornado vs. Scorpio Sky
Match thoughts: Tornado comes out on crutches and seemingly has a broken leg or ankle, and we still get a match. A pretty solid affair where they did well with what they could and Scorpio Sky heeled it up perfectly and efficiently destroyed Tornado. It told a much better story than any other match preceding it and overall it was a very fun watch.
6) Joey Ryan (c) vs. Chris Sabin (PWG World Championship Match)
Match thoughts: A perfectly acceptable match though nothing earth shattering or even memorable. After a few ref bumps Sabin wins the match only for it to be restarted on a technicality allowing Ryan to keep his belt after a few more ref bumps. I know that around the time with TNA wrestlers only allowed to appear non televised indies and that no TNA wrestler was seemingly allowed to lose cleanly which meant shenanigans in the finish or a flash pin. We got the shenanigan finish here, the crowd seemed to be behind Sabin but the match was pretty generic.
7) Super Dragon & Davey Richards (c) vs. Christopher Daniels & AJ Styles (PWG World Tag Title Match)
Match thoughts: Christopher Daniels is the TNA X-Division champ here and AJ Styles was main eventing TNA shows so I expect either a title switch or a screwy /flash finish. AJ & Richards seemed to have a real problem with each other which resulted in some excellent exchanges, usually the cutting each other off with stiff strikes type. Lots of great team work moments too from both sides and it made for a highly competitive encounter, as neither wrestler clearly wanted to hold anything back or be outshone by the other. After all was said and done it certainly was a great tag title match and the intensity level was off the charts, it stumbled a little towards the end with Super Dragon messing up a few spots but it still entertained.
Overall show thoughts:
Two great tag matches with a load of hot action and some genuine exciting moments add in a decent bunch of singles matches made for a solid show, the best singles match was Scorpio Sky vs. Human Tornado as what they were aiming for was achieved extremely well. I certainly wasnt bored at any point watching the show and while the PWG style is sometimes a little hit and miss with myself I found it wasnt a hindrance what so ever.
