AusGAF 10 - Node Country for Old Men

Not open for further replies.
My personal disappointments of the last console generation otherwise known as the time period of 2005-2013, include not eating enough pancakes and owning less than 7 fedoras.

I think the flat cap has replaced the fedora. I still think they are the daggiest things ever. It's a holdover from growing up in the 80's.

That said, when I was in high school, you could have been flayed alive for wearing flared trousers, calling someone a dude was old fashioned or saying something cool (though you could saying something was hot and it would mean the same thing.

There's something in OT about hipsters trying to rock walking sticks and monocles. What next? petticoats? sock-suspenders? knickerbockers?

Already have a GPU, PSU, SATA HDDs to swap into it. Using an external optical drive. Not planning on overclocking but I opted for the i7 as I suspect the additional video encoding power will come in handy when using Steam in-home streaming (the PC this is replacing will perform client duties).

Yes that build is fine for streaming. Just a thing to note: if you don't want to use Quick Sync, then you can get a Xeon E3-1230 V3 instead. Its basically the same thing as the i7 4770 but it doesn't have integrated graphics (so no Quick Sync) and its $40 cheaper.

Thanks Tommy. Hadn't even considered a Xeon as I've not looked at their product line for years, and that was only for, y'know, actual servers.

Edit: Looks like Steam In-Home Streaming uses Quick Sync now, so the i7 would have benefit for me: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/homestream#announcements/detail/1387413317054247916

I dropped my GamePad now the screen's fucked fffffffff.

I assume Nintendo will fix it even though it wouldn't be covered by warranty?

I'd save some money and get the cheaper RAM without the silly heatsinks.

I know two people that wear a flat cap. One is a lesbian who gets more hot girls than I would even know what to do with, the other is the lead lecturer in forensic psychology at a British university with a wife and kids. I'll take them for role models ;)

A hat doesth noteth maketh the personeth.

I still wear kooky tshirts that I bought online from webcomics and Teefury so I'd be the last person to pretend to know what the in fashion is.

What do you mean by flat cap?

You mean the snapbacks that every person underr the sun is wearing? Basketball hats with stickers on them?

Those are for cool kids.

Fedoras are not.

I guess if you're Brad Pitt or Justin Timberlake you could pull off just about anything, not so sure about the dude in the bottom left though.
I like flat caps, but this from the link cracked me up:
The number of male celebrities that have been seen in this hat brings forth our next point. This style of hat pretty much suits any face shape so it literally can be worn by everyone.
Yeah, as long as you have a good looking thin face with nice cheekbones and a great wardrobe anyone can wear it lol

I don't claim to be fashionable. Peeps in Washington tend to dress a lot daggier than slick Californians. Also peeps are marshmallow birds they eat at Easter in the US rather than bunnies. Or they would if Good Friday and Easter Monday were public holidays. So weird walking around on Good Friday and it's a normal business day.
And Hot Cross Buns? Nope! savages!

In other news, I have been invited to Easter lunch with people I possibly could have killed three years ago.

also, look at these stylish chaps waiting for soup. the guy on the far right of the pic is behind the times.

Oh ok. Yeh they're in no way fedora level.

People who wear those that ive seen tend to be relatively trendy.

Fedoras are for pasty nerdz

Yeah, agree, they're mostly pretty dumb. I landed on those as they were the cheapest I saw at (IIRC) 1866MHz from a brand I recognized (and the motherboard vendor had them in their approved hardware list).

But then, I wonder if anything over 1600 is relevant with an i7 since it's all overclocked and outside spec etc.

So, finished Second Son's story today. Absolutely no incentive to go around and collect all the orbs shards, although I think I might play through the evil story just to see what it's like. I reckon I could burn through it pretty quickly now.

Solid game, but it doesn't flow or feel as good as Crackdown did.
You and I will have to agree to disagree, Mr. Pwned. Some of Harmon's worst gibberish with a few decent jokes in between.
Don't pay any attention to him, he's American now. Probably likes BBT and Moms.

The more CPU bound you are, the more you seem to benefit from faster memory. Most games are pretty GPU bound hence why most people don't actually benefit from fast memory.

Enjoying the long weekend at Port Macquarie. Gotta love coastal towns. And buffets. *burps*

Happy easter GAF.

Also, today was the first time in about 10 years that I set foot in a swimming pool. That was exciting for some reason.

Okay guys. Today, my faithful computer died its last death, but a day too late to expect some sort of resurrection tomorrow. So, I need to buy another one but don't really keep up with the ins and outs of PC tech, anymore. Therefore, I come to you all, for advice and corrections to my horrible selections.

I don't upgrade much, anymore, so I expect that this will last me 4 or 5 years (much like this one had). It really doesn't get used for games anymore, at least not many that would push a GPU. The main purpose of the computer is porn and porn related pursuits. Plus photoshop, encoding DVDs into video files, photoshop, internet, and the odd bit of video or audio editing when porn isn't keeping my attention.

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OEM $110.00
SilverStone ST75F-P 750W Power Supply $139.00
Cooler Master Hyper 212X CPU Cooler $44.00
Asus GRYPHON-Z87 4x DDR3 3xPCI-E 6xSATA3 4xUSB3.0 DVI HDMI $189.00
Intel Core i7 4770K LGA1150 CPU 3.5Ghz 8Mb Cache Haswell $392.00
Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 CMY8GX3M2A1600C9 1600MHz Dimm, Unbuffered, 9-9-9-24, Vengeance Pro Black He $115.00
Gigabyte GTX 760 OC EDITION PCI-E 3.0 4GB 256-bit DDR5, Base:1085 boost:1150/6008 MHz, 2x DVI, HDMI, $365.00
Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA III 6Gbs 2.5 7mm 540MB/s/520MB/s. $175.00
NZXT H230 USB 3.0 Black Mid Tower(NO PSU) $89.00
Pioneer BDR-209EBK 15X Blu-Ray Writer Drive SATA Black Retail. $95.00

Firstly, will all this stuff work? Together? In unison? Harmoniously? I think it will. Will it run my porn at 1080p 60fps? Are there things on this list that aren't worth it (i.e don't get Haswell yet, that video card sucks, etc). Any help that anyone would like to provide will be greatly appreciated.

I hope you're all having a wonderful long weekend, guys.

I have the 2gb version of that video card, it's done pretty well for me so far, no heat issues or anything. I have the slightly older 212 Evo cooler, it is pretty good but the fan was loud as hell, it failing the other week was a blessing, got a noctua fan and the whole computer is quiet as. I have that SSD as well but the 128gb version, in fact, you have everything just a bit better than me. Bastard. Except your case, I like my case better.

Don't really know enough to be able to tell you whether it is all best value stuff, but it looks okay.

Don't bother with a K CPU unless you want to overclock. The 4770 and 4770K are identical except that the K is unlocked for overclocking. Consider a 4771 (which I found today is a thing!) or the 4770, or the Xeon as suggested to me above might be suitable for you depending on usage patterns.

Maybe check a cheaper motherboard like the Z87M Plus as well.

You can get (legitimate) keys for Windows far cheaper than that here. You can probably save 90 dollars or so.

Anyway, based on your total pricing of $1713, I present an alternate build from PCCaseGear.

$1,737.00

Technically if you factor in postage and OS I'm over-budget by around 100 dollars. I notice you didn't have an HDD in your original build. This is fine if you knew you were doing that but I added that in just to be safe. If you eliminate that, you can save 139 dollars. You can select a cheaper (different) case that is probably as good, I don't know much about those really. Save 30-40 there. You can probably get away with a 650W PSU in that machine (I'm using 650W with a more powerful graphics card, but less powerful processor). That build uses a 770 instead of 760, which is a fair whack more powerful (but also more expensive). A 760 + i7 Haswell is a bit lopsided towards the CPU, so I chose a more powerful GPU in this build. Note that I chose 2GB version , not 4GB. This was not an accident, the 4GB versions of both 760 and 770 don't offer much benefit. You can select the non-K version of your CPU if you don't intend to overclock and save money there. I doubled your RAM from 8 to 16 GB.

Double check with the PC thread before you buy anything.

There are better power supplies than that Silverstone or Corsair unit. Silverstone's PSU OEM of choice is generally Enhance and they're generally pretty mediocre unless size is important. Corsair sells by brand name so not only are you paying a Corsair tax for everything but their lower end hardware is honestly not very good.

Around that $130 price bracket, I'd much rather choose a 500-600W Antec High Current Gamer or True Power Classic. Both are Seasonic models that don't really have any performance problems under extreme stress.

Edit:

To adjust ThoseDeafMutes' build, I'd probably swap out the case for this and get a slightly cheaper PSU in the form of an Antec High Current Gamer 620W. He's also forgotten the CPU cooler so don't forget to get that. If you don't need Blu-Ray burning capability but still want to read Blu-Rays, just get a LG Blu-Ray Combo for ~$65 from MSY or somewhere similar.

To clarify, its mainly for Photoshop and video encoding?

But what the fuck is up with the prices for the new consoles here? I decidedly to take a look at the current prices and deals...and it's absurd.

$550 for a PS4....with no bundles or games whatsoever, yet the Xbox One is $599 with Forza & Titanfall + 1 free month of Live. I have no desire to purchase an Xbox One, but the compared value is rather nice.

For a PS4, additional controller & 3-4 games, we're looking at around $800+.

Happy Easter all. This was my flight home. Still in LAX, should depart in a couple of hours, but I have now missed most of Easter weekend after being away all school holidays. Also, I fractured my arm in while sightseeing Montreal on the morning I flew out. Yay Canadian emergency healthcare but really, FML.

I'm quite concerned about how easy it was to fracture my arm. I am now taking very seriously my doctor's warnings about Vitamin D / Calcium.

Welcome to Australia. Wait until you compare prices for online titles. CoD:MW2 is still $90 on Steam. 99c (US) apps on the iOS app store are now I think $1.29AU. PSN prices are fucking ridiculous, with a $29.99US title like a Pinball Arcade season pack going for around $45AUD.

Enjoy your stay!

That seems strange. Surely they could have just landed at Hawaii.

Wow. Thank you very much, Dead Man, cods, Deaf and Tommy (yes, it's mainly for Photoshop and encoding) for your responses. I really, really appreciate you all taking the time to reply, especially Deaf for putting together a suggested system. AusGAF truly is bestGAF.

I'm looking to get this ASAP (because I'm predominately using my computer to find a job these days), so I am looking at stuff that is available through umart, because I can pick up from them. Therefore I've had to pick and choose from everyone's suggestions based upon availability and price. I've still had to include a retail Windows disk because I don't really have internet and need to disk to install from, rather than downloading a USB version and a cheap key. Also, I hadn't included a hard drive because I knew what I was going to get. I've made a few decisions about price and have cheaper out on a couple of things, like a smaller SSD; 120gig is plenty and a 250 is just adding unneeded expense. Also, I've always bought the overclockable CPU but have never actually done it.

Thank you all, once again. So here I present version 2 of "The computer that love and cooperation built"

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OEM $110.00
Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler $88.00
Western Digital Green 3TB Green 64MB SATA 3 WD30EZRX $129.00
Fractal Design Define R4 USB3.0 Mid Tower Case Black $139.00
G.Skill 16GB DDR3-1600 Dual Channel [NT] F3-1600C11D-16GNT $165.00
LG BH16NS40(OEM) Blu-Ray WRITER/16X BD-WRITE/16X DVDRW/SATA/OEM BULK PACKING $89.00
Asus Z87M-PLUS 4xDDR3 PCI-E 6xSATA3 6xUSB3.0 DVI D-SUB HDMI GLAN $128.00
Intel Core i7 4770 LGA1150 CPU 3.4Ghz 8Mb Cache Haswell $348.00
Gigabyte GTX760 OC 2G GDDR5, PCIE3.0, DVI, HDMI, DISPLAY PORT, WINDF X3 FAN $30$305.00
Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA III 6Gbs 7mm 2.5inch 540MB/410MB $102.00
Antec 650W True Power Classic. 80Plus Gold. Up to 92% Efficiency, 2x High current +12V Rail $130.00

If you see any huge no-nos, please let me know as I probably order this tonight or tomorrow. Either that, or just wait for me to order it and laugh as I post increasingly angry "Why doesn't this go into that / why is this not being recognised" posts. Actually, I wouldn't blame you for doing that. That's pretty funny.
