I found it to be pretty amazing. The exhibition hall was well laid out, there was plenty of room for everything with little cramping, there was lots of stuff actually worth seeing and it was clear that most companies were really trying, the panels were generally easy to get into and were well run, it was possible to get food (albeit a tad overpriced) whenever you wanted it without having to wait in line for half an hour.

The only thing I found could have been done better is some signage to indicate which way the various satellite theatres were for the panels. It was a little confusing trying to find the Dropbear one. The maps did help, but some signpost-like signage on the main concourses would have been awesome.

I strongly suggest that anyone who passed on PAX '14 due to the conditions at PAX '13 give PAX '15 a look see. It has improved in many ways, and will likely only get better from here out.
That sounds awesome :D
I will definitely go next year, only reason I couldn't make it this time was lack of money and exams. I hope they move it to a better weekend...

Ah... Horses really are the most beautiful animals...

Be lovely to see this in person next year.

Good luck, everyone!
They really are lovely :)

Ack, stupid Brisbane. I forgot about day light savings and missed the race >< oh well.

Yeah... The sports bar I went to to use the machine had a lot of, mmmm, interesting people there. It did kind of remind me of going to the casino when I'd go to Vegas for work. The reek of desperation and the sort of betters who do this kind of thing daily. :( That's why when I do my once in a blue moon betting it's definitely just for kicks.

Yeah horses are beautiful, now whip them harder so I can get more money!

It's not something I think the sport needs, personally, especially not when it's used past the point of signaling (which isn't painful or harmful). I've heard plenty from both sides on it, good as well as bad (the BHA review with the new guidelines), but it'd be nice to see it completely removed because some jockeys/trainers do abuse it and probably will continue to when they can get away with it even if it's against the rules.

That sounds awesome :D

I used to be a horseback trail guide in the Catskills and cleaning/buffing them up in the morning felt more like a privilege than work. :) They're just so beautifully put together.

I'm at the races now. It's good fun. Beer is shit and expensive though.

Haven't won anything yet either...

Everyone should experience the Melbourne cup once. Just so that they know not to go ever again.

I got a code for a Level 20 Legendary Blacksmith Armour Shader for Destiny on the PS4 apparently.
Any of you nerds want it?

Sure, why not. Cheers.

How was PAX? The venue looked much better than last year from the pics.

One of the biggest PAX events ever, don't have actual stat numbers of attendees yet, but Penny Arcade staff listed it as one of their biggest and most successful events.

Is it that bad? People here keep recommending it to me... It's really romanticized on TV and in the live coverage it looks like great fun, but I could also see it being one of those things with a nice veneer but shitty inside.

aww, I'm so jealous. That sounds incredible. I used to love riding when I was a kid but I haven't been near a horse for maybe 8 years now. I wonder if it's too late to start again.

Melbourne Cup is super busy and there are a ton of messy people in terms of alcohol or betting addiction.

I'd recommend going once for the experience and just go to major local ones in the future. Geelong Cup is always fun.

It's a super hedonistic event though, those poor horses :(

The movie Kenny has some great sequences set at the cup. Nothing to do with the horses.

my overriding memory of melbourne cup is from the 2000 race day in Brisbane. I looked out of my Fortitude Valley office window around 4:30pm and saw a woman in a fancy hat and poker dot dress staggering along the road (our office was in a hilly part of town. She seemed to stop and stoop down as if she had dropped something. Seconds later, a flood of liquid started streaming down the footpath, quite coincidentally from underneath the position of the woman, whom we will call 'Tipsy McPissinginthestreetinbroaddaylight.' She finished her business and then merrily staggered down the street.

You know that you've got bad luck when you get the favourite in the office pool, who then proceeds to come last and die straight after the race.

:( really? Fuck horse racing.

The 2014 Melbourne Cup has taken a tragic turn with pre-race favourite Admire Rakti dying after the race.
After surprisingly finishing in last position, the Japanese raider reportedly collapsed and died not long after.
The Tomoyuki Umeda-trained horse was paying $6 to take out the iconic three-handled trophy on Tuesday after winning the Caulfield Cup three weekends ago.

But so soon after being the toast of the Spring Carnival, Admire Rakti is deceased.
Meanwhile, another Melbourne Cup runner in Araldo is also fighting for his life.
Araldo was returning to scale after the race when he shied after a child waved a flag at him and shattered a cannon bone in the process.
The vets are trying their best to save him.

Guess it did happen :(

It's rough work (7-8 hours minimum in the saddle), but it's very satisfying in general. Plus my boss would just let me drop by whenever and take my favorite out for a personal ride for a couple of hours. Tourists can be hard to deal with, though. We had a school of a very strict religion come every year and it's part of their beliefs that women are inferior and are not to be listened to, which made it very hard to lead a group of them (age-15-18) up a mountain... -_-

Ah, yeah. I could see that. Looks like the aftermath from some concerts. People are all dressed up, but clothes ≠ manners it seems. :/

I also keep hearing about this scourge of drunk bogans, but I haven't witnessed it yet. Just lucky, I guess?

Yeah, just saw after x3n05's post. :( Seems like no idea what yet.

Also, on a less depressing note, it's never too late to go back to riding. I'd love to adopt retired horses or volunteer at a senior horse home. You could do that if you didn't feel comfortable just straight going to a training school for it.

Goodness. Well, whoever said dresses were impractical? :p

My favourite part:

His tactics, which include choking women and pulling them into his crotch, have been criticised online as misogynistic and abusive.

so he hasn't been criticised elsewhere? lol

Awwww, I didn't mean to encourage you if you're in a tough time right now. I'm just betting for fun (hence the hilariously low amounts), but it'd be fun if we won for sure. :)

Just got back from the sports bar after putting mine in. Man, oh, man, that was an... interesting experience...

30 minutes to go until my dark horses win it all! :D

So Yea we didn't win!! Though I put a bet on whereisthebarman. At the last minute... So won that because he placed.

Anyways. Was a good time and wouldn't mind going next year. Yes there is trash around, like every large event, but they were already cleaning it up when I left at the end.

Don't let some people here discourage you. I didn't see many drunk bogans actually either.

My heart was beating pretty fast when Brambles starting making his move, though (so close but so far...). :D I'm glad you at least something in the end. Told ya he had a cool name!

I am a bit mixed on it all now, though. Those I know who did go seemed to really enjoy it, but given Admire Rakti's fate, my love for Dick Francis novels and his stance on horse racing has been a bit tempered by a reminder of the uglier side of the sport. I know it's all heavily regulated here, but will have to look into things a bit more. There's always AFL/Soccer/Cricket/Rugby/etc. in the meantime. Plenty more chances to meet these fabled drunk bogans. :)

No way that happens anytime soon. I'm still waiting for a proper account system to implemented ie. One that isn't locked to hardware.

I have been entertainted today by the going-on in CoD: AW.
Soooooooo much better than Ghosts.

Yeah I'm really enjoying it. Haven't ventured outside hardcore team death match yet though.

It was an actual stand, and the sign was there even when it was manned. I'd much rather some sort of stand from the Victorian government guys who do financing for developers, but that's probably too much to ask.
