Also with career, there is no being forced to do certain car classes to progress etc, you can do what you want I believe, be it go karts or formula a, it's up to you.

I just saw the female presenter of a news programme gloat about wearing a $50,000 special edition poppy made for ANZAC Day.

I don't have any words really.

It's all a business now. Tacky and commercialised up the whazoo.

It's also essentially fake remembrance too. Because there are still countless veterans and their families who have to fight for even modest compensation through DVA.

Every government is completely disingenuous about supporting returned servicemen. They prefer to talk only about dead ones as they are cheaper to look after.

When I was back home in Scotland, I couldn't help but notice the number of well-off looking people proudly wearing their poppies around Remembrance Day while walking by a homeless ex-soldier in Edinburgh without as much as a second glance.

If there's one thing I hate, it's forced or institutionalised "remembrance". Because then it just loses all fucking significance. Remember what people fought and died for - regardless of whatever war or whatever side - and do it in your own way. Oh what am I rambling on about now, lolz, let them be fresh in our memories and save on your frozen foodz amirite?!

anyone else having stupid dns issues with iinet right now? i have to refresh a few times for it to even work sometimes. and it took 10+ for a secure connection to download itunes. the fuck is going on. whirlpool says nothing also

In the day after the woolworths fresh memory ads, I found it opportunistic and cynical to see a massive stand of anzac biscuits at the local Coles.
Its really gone way too far these days.

Anzac day should basically be a quiet day of remembrance for surviving returned people, or whatever they want to do. It has no relevance to most people that their great uncle whom they never met served on some significant battle - we have no real point of connection between people with direct experience of some wars (notably ww1 now). So it just reeks of faux emotion seeing 20-somethings at anzac cove draped in the flags pretending to have any comprehension of what it was like.

Id be happy if they scrapped the pomp and ceremony and spent the savings on supporting TPI veterans or their widows or children.

I saw the Star Wars trailer.

I hate Star Wars. But that was a good trailer.

In 2 minutes Abrahms has done better work than Lucas has done in, oh, 20 years.

Anything released after the revisions in the mid 90s. I like ep4-6, Im not a stickler for who shot first though, but eps1-3 are poo and the hayden christensen ghost was dumb.

My introduction to Star Wars was the 20th Anniversary cinematic re-releases. Back then my mum would give my sister and I money to go to the cinema every Saturday. I managed to catch the whole trilogy in a few weeks. I also got said trilogy on VHS as well.

That and I collected ALL of the Star Wars tazos. I've got them all in the folder and everything. I just assume you Aussies got the same thing as the UK. :p

But, meh, Star Trek > Star Wars.

I remember watching TESB in 95 (?) and when the credits ended I hated it because there was no ending. It was stupid. Also at light speed they couldn't have gotten where they were meant to, so that clashed with my at the time study of relativity.

But yeah, Star Trek is infinitely better. It basically revolves around moral quandaries and technological solutions. Star Wars is just political conflict in space with lasers and cowboys.

Trek is Sci Fi, Wars is Space Opera. The difference is that the former tries to explain or explore the technology and its consequences on some level, whereas the latter just cranks things up to 11 and has fun with it.

Another way to out it is that Space Opera is Fantasy in space.

Confession: I love me some Sci Fi, but I never was a fan of Trek.

Trek is Sci Fi, Wars is Space Opera.

Space Opera is a subgenre of Science Fiction. They're both Sci Fi. Your characterisation of Space Opera is also wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too general. There's plenty of Space Opera (a term referring to grand and/or very dramatic adventures in space themed around a war of some kind) that is extremely technical and would make Star Trek blush in how much dry, technical nonsense the characters spew. There's plenty of space opera that explores how technology fundamentally transforms the human condition or future societies. Or explores the ethical implications of technology.

Star Wars does not have technobabble. It dispenses exposition about its technology by demonstrating what it can do or have characters talk around it. There is no Lt Data giving a technical spiel about the antipositronic dildo particles reversing the polarity of the subspace field emitters. However, the plots are often technically focussed. The original Star Wars movie's main plot is about stealing the blueprints to a space station to find a weakness that could be exploited to destroy it. The plan involves deploying fighter craft to launch what are essentially nuclear weapons at the core of the space station through one of its exhaust ports, avoiding turbolaser fire. They try to use targeting computers to achieve this. All the while racing against the clock because the Death Star's orbit around the gas giant Yavin will soon give it a targeting solution on the Rebel base on one of it's moons.

It's dripping with science fiction concepts man. The fact that the force is involved doesn't invalidate it being SF - it's no different than psychic powers or godlike aliens in Trek that snap their finger to perofrm their unspecified magic. Or the Ancients/ascended beings in Stargate. Or literal god in Battlestar Galactica.

Trek does have episodes that deal with the implications of technology on future socities. But not all. And that is not a requirement of SF. A lot of modern SF's origins were in pulp serials of the first half of the 20th century which are fucking nothing like Star Trek. It also has roots in stuff like Jules Verne. But it's a mish mash and you can't narrow it down to something so specific. You certainly can't deny that Star Wars is Science Fiction.

Star Wars is a fairy tale in space. You'd think that the "once upon a time in a galaxy far away" thing would give it away.

Sci fi can encompass any kind of story. The unifying thing is that there is technology of sorts which whilst not necessarily forms the focus of the story, at least provides important context.

Star Wars is sci fi.

edit: further thinking says technology isn't even a requirement. It just has to be something beyond what might normally be the case (very fuzzy definition here). I would say even The Man From Earth is clearly sic fi, yet it involves no technology. But the concept is something which might be explained scientifically (presumably telomeres are involved).

Th might be one of those nebulous concepts that defies definition, like pornography. There's Sci Fi that explores the implications of the introduction of bow and arrow technology to the lives of cave people.

What I was trying to say is that Wars and Trek are trying to do very different things. It's okay to like both the Wii U and the PS4, guys. They scratch different itches. With one, you get the life-affirming joy of Nintendo games (Wars) whereas the other offers an actual modern gaming experience.

Like with most things, it depends upon your price range and needs. Moka pots are usually either made from aluminum (lower end quality) or stainless steel (high end quality) and come in a range of sizes that produce different quantities. If you're just making coffee for yourself and want to test it out, you could look at getting Bialetti aluminium 1 cup moka pot for about $40 or go up to a stainless steel (preferable) pot that produces up to 10 cups for $100. The links are just for illustrative purposes and are not recommendations of who to buy from.

Now, the things is that they aren't the best way to produce coffee. That will always be an espresso machine but if you don't wish to go down that route these are one fo the best alternatives. You still need to buy grounds, have access to a stove top and go through a song and dance to produce a coffee but I like them a lot. I also like the convenience of being able to take them traveling/camping and still be able to produce a satisfying coffee when I'm away from home.

The best advice (like with most things) is probably to buy yourself a cheap entry level model and first see if you like the coffee is produces and can tolerate the process needed to attain it.

Cheers Jase!
Mmm I'll probably go for a cheap one first to try

It's like they're desperate for nobody in Australia to watch GOT legally.

It's still illegal though isn't it
just morally better

I haven't got an e-mail about it. Might be because I didn't associate any credit cards with the payment.

Same here. Though really I probably would have let it lapse after the trial anyway.

As it was I was thinking about not watching so as to try to avoid book spoilers. Though with showrunners claiming no book spoilers this season I've been a bit unsure. Certain I'm not enthused enough to pay around 30$ (30 with foxtel or around 25 for HBONow) a month for one show for 3 months.

but ever so delicious
RIP original Nexus 7. Seems like the GPU died on it. Got some buzzing noise coming from that location.

Could probably buy a logic online but I don't think it's really worth it.

just had a very weird somber moment with some friends playing dungeons and dragons in space, where the first character of our party died. We've been playing with the same party for five to six years, and have somehow gotten through every encounter alive thus far.

and then I blew my friend out of an airlock.

tabletop games are strange, guys.

I know I go through my phases of posting heaps, then not much at all, but I would love to come!

AusGAF, I just started playing Dragon Age: Inquisition. Roughly how long do you guys reckon it takes to finish the main storyline?

Are you happy to ignore most of the useless busywork side content?

Maybe 30-35 hours.

The other 50 hours of gameplay is primarily collectathon crap with a few good quests scattered about.

Aw, it's a shame I've heard so many bad things about the side quests, because the world itself seems to have a lot of potential to explore. I'll probably give the majority of side quests a miss, then.

Didn't you see the posts I made about getting kicked out of the house by my parents? Teresa is the girl that relates intimately to that story. :p
