Hey what's a good way of getting ISPs to listen re: fluctuating internet speeds?

I'm with iiNet, and we've generally been pretty good but lately when no one is using the internet, it struggles to load up basic pages. Netflix doesn't work, won't connect to PSN etc. I did a speed test and it managed a paltry 13kbps, just horrid.

Then later that day, I turned steam and expected to wait years for it to connect and load, but it was fine, and in fact even downloaded at like 3 MBps... so I don't even understand what is doing it.

I'm getting this disparity on all devices. My desktop wired in gets really slow and fast points, my phone/tablet/PS4 all the same as well, some fast some slow at different points.

Tried all the usual reset etc bullshit but to no avail. Going to buy a new router tonight and keep the receipt just in case, but just always feel like if I call up they are going to treat me like a complete idiot and assume I'm super dumb.

Anyone have any tips anyway? :/

I don't have any tips, but I have a feeling you may be in for a rough time (I hope not, but it's a possibility). If your modem/router hasn't carked it, you're likely to experience a lot of finger-pointing between iiNet and Telstra. At some point the cabling inside your property boundary could also be blamed for the problem.

One important thing to know is that you are only responsible for cables inside your property boundary. Telstra is responsible for the rest.

If you've had a lot of rain in your area lately, it might take a day or two to return to normal. You'll find that the pits will fill up with water and this will interfere with your network speed and performance. However, it shouldn't behave in the way you're experiencing without an equipment fault somewhere. Rebooting your modem is a good idea in circumstances such as this because it forces a renegotiation between your modem and the exchange, which involves it testing the lines for errors and differences in performance.

They can monitor and test the lines from where they are to identify possible problems. Usually they're not too challenging for them to identify, if they're not incompetent. If you have or are able to get a different phone cable (preferably as short as reasonably possible), this is also a good idea.

Actually, a good tip would be to unplug every single device which uses your telephone line. Make sure your modem is plugged directly into the phone socket (no filter) and reboot it. See if this makes a difference. If so, something is interfering and/or a line filter on one of those devices has failed. Plug them back in one at a time, testing after plugging in each to identify the culprit.

hmm, depends how badly you need it or want force touch trackpad.

There's not likely to be a huge difference so save the money. also, the current ones will have pricing baced on the exchange rate when they were released, the new ones will hve pricing based on the current exchange rate so that saving may be even more significant.

Bit the bullet and just got the mbp for $1600, it's the most I'd want to spend on a laptop anyway.
As much as I like the new macbook colours I can't justify buying one seeing as it's so underpowered, and the 12" screen was a bit too small. Odds are that the different colours will roll over to next years mbp but the new pricing is too much for my liking.

Yep. Some schools have cheap options, but rarely have subsidies.

At least my daughter's school doesn't require an iPad for year 7/8 and then a new laptop from 9 on like some...

Wow really? Jeez, technology is advancing faster than I would have expected. I only graduated 6 years ago and we didn't even have electronic white boards then. I'm honestly not sure if it's the best idea, I know if I had a laptop at school I would have slacked off a lot more. Even when we went to the computer labs for a special reason there was always a game of counter strike happening up the back somewhere. I can see benefits if they use special programs like mathletics of language learning apps etc but I kind of get the impression that a lot of schools are jumping on board trying to be 'hip' when a lot of teachers don't understand the technology or how to prevent kids from just going on facebook the whole time.

I've been enjoying AC: Syndicate today. I was trawling through Lego D for the last 3/12 weeks, almost as a chore whenever it wasn't a portal level, but Syndicate has been a lot of fun so far and runs nicely enough on PS4.

I noticed my DS4 has the peeling issue, and today the console took 20 minute for the damn thing to start up. I'm going to have pick up a new one by year's end.

holy fuck at what they can get away with for charging the 500Gb PS3 here compared to the 12GB. Yes you need a caddy but there are lots of hacks to avoid buying the bracket.
which is something like this. so yeah, a 12Gb from Big W, this bracket and crack open a cheap portable USB drive (doing the research to make sure the connections haven't been rearranged like some externals) will be far less than buying a 500GB model.

AC3 was utterly terrible. Unity was no where near AC3 depths. Unity was far, far better than 3 (at least on par with the least of the Ezio games, Revelations, though still below Black Flag. Syndicate feels more like II (which was kind of what Unity aspired to). Basically any AC game where the protagonist doesn't speak with a US accent is a good 'un. or at least, a fun 'un.

Caramelised pineapple or banana fritters are technically vegan (and in the absence of dairy, black sapote could be used as a topping) - but I guess anything more complex does start to run into problems, especially if it has to be baked. At least there's always halva.

Yeah i could log in through the phone app just nothing through the ps4. Reset modem, reset ps4, deleted and readded the network, used a different connection tethered off my phone. Factory reset ps4. I did a bit of looking around and seems there are some outage issues but its a bit random.

I'm more than willing to wait until Christmas/NY to buy a PS4. I'm pretty confident that there will be gigantic sales around that time - especially if they still have 500GB PS4 stock to clear. That and you'll probably get a good deal on a bundle with older games they want to get rid of.

A PS4 isn't a priority to me, but I may as well take advantage of the GBP/AUD exchange rate before I leave Australia at the end of January.
