I played through the first episode of Life Is Strange, and I think it has the potential to be the best narrative game yet. It's very similar to Gone Home, but framed more as a Telltale style choice game. It does have a strange timetravel gameplay hook, which I could pass on really, but it's as much a mechanical element as it is a story beat.
Tonally, the game feels like... this is gonna sound weird, but it feels like a short story. Like, a book, made by some obscure author who writes teenage fantasy stuff. And what I mean by that, is that it feels really consistent throughout the episode. The writing style, and the story beats, they all feel like they're of one mind. You know how The Witcher has all this deep seated lore and history because it's based off a fantasy series? Life is Strange feels like someone wrote a book about being a teenager with timetravel, and then someone else is adapting the book into a game.
Who knows if the "season" will wrap up to anything meaningful, but the first episode was incredibly solid, and it feels like this might finally be a narrative game that gets the narrative right. So, I'm excited. Hopefully the release schedule isn't as shocking as Telltale's or the Kentucky Route Zero team.
