IIS 7 is a piece of shit
IIS 7 is ok once you get used to it. It's a huge redesign though. Technically it's supposed to be a lot better than 6, but it's even worse than Office 2003 > Office 2007 in terms of relearning the interface.

iMac 24" at work is shitting itself, we don't have the original discs that it shipped with (thanks eBay!) so we can't run Apple Hardware Test - any alternatives?

Um have you just tried holding down D? Some macs tend to have it built in and the disc isn't actually required.

There's a good chance the internal apple one sucks, it actually does. You could try techtool pro which would be more a commercial one.

But how is it shitting itself?

rass- how so- lots of beachballs? (try quitting programs rather than just press the red disc- it just closes the window) or do you get a kernel panic (grey curtain descending or a grey screen saying you have a problem)?

if the latter- it's either a USB device it doesn't like or the RAM is loose- you can reseat it (take it in and out but be very gentle when reinserting and don't use the plastic hook things to push in the ram) and it will fix a large number of probs.

the system extension"/System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used
and about 15 more of the same error with different kexts. Machine won't turn back on now, tried holding 'd' with no disc and it didn't get past the grey start screen.
Before this started the ethernet cable was connecting and disconnecting about 15 times a minute, it was like a rave watching the network tab of system prefs.

We'll probably get a Techtool Pro now, but it won't help us for the couple of weeks it takes to get here haha :(

will try the ram fix - at the moment just have it booted as a target disk and backing up emails to another machine (22gbs worth, wtf) - everything else is backed up already.

When are NAL confirming how much they're expecting us to pay for the 3DS? That's today, right?

I can't believe they're going to charge $400 for it. Such a farce.

I will almost bet money the RAM reseat will fix that. almost.

Where's your work located in the city rass?
Eltham haha, dodge home office :/
most of our problems stem from my boss not believing me that a separate server with NAS is a better setup than 2 iMacs with a bunch of USB2 HDDs attached to them.

Thinking of looking for a new job, in the city, so I can have lunch with my friends.

Yes, join us in the city.

Side note, holding down d to enter the diagnostic can take for fucking ever. So hold that bastard down for 2 minutes and if nothing happens then i guess it's not built in.

I wouldn't mind going to the Melbourne 3DS thing but it's 6 - 9pm and i wouldn't get home till 10 - 11. Plus i'm not a handheld gamer so all my impressions would be "Oh, his an asshole!"

Working in a city is awesome, everything you could possibly need and everything is close.
Working is good, but if you don't live close the commute is shit. Wife's starting a new job close to home next week and gets an extra two hours a day because of no longer having to travel into the city.

approximately 8pm

'Following its case against GeoHot, Dukio reports that Sony is planning to subpoena YouTube, Twitter, PayPal and Slashdot as well as various PlayStation and cracking-centric forums and sites'

'The targeted sites will be required to give up each user’s contact details and personal information, as well as all posts and documents created, IP address information and more.'

good fucking luck with that.

Twitter and youtube i would say are somewhat protected by freedom of speech in the US.

If not, welcome to 1984.

I'm pretty sure I heard about Twitter ponying up logs when subpoenaed just recently. For Wikileaks maybe? Did they actually provide logs?

Edit: No, it doesn't look like Twitter provided the logs (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/01/08/world/main7225323.shtml), but they do tell their users about them, which is nice. I'm not sure if freedom of speech cover if it's a criminal investigation or matter of national security.

hacking the ps3 is not a matter of national security nor should it be a crime

pirating IP is, hacking a system is not (well except in the USA who have that abhorrent DMCA law)

$400? Confirmed? If so, I am holding out for the redesign. At lest a bunch of games will be dirt cheap by then.

Damn hand held gaming, it costs me more than console gaming since by two brother and I split the cost evenly.

I was referring the national security in the context of Wikileaks.

Regardless of whether you think it's right or not, geohot is an American citizen who broke American laws while in America. So, it's a crime.

I don't think he did anything wrong, even though it's likely to hurt Sony's sales, they really brought it upon themselves. Even if they'd enabled some sort of old firmware dual boot with a "we're not supporting it any more, but here it is", they could have avoided the whole mess.

The headline story at thecouriermail.com.au is on Shane Warne's new mattress.

The standard of online news in five years time is just going to be pictures of explosions and porn, isn't it.

So today I taught myself how not to make fried rice.

Found Sin and Punishment sitting in JB today. After a celebratory dance, I quickly grabbed it and never looked back despite the $89 price tag.

If this was twitter, I would totally retweet this. Since it is Gaf, let me be among the first to say... lol.

1 - I burnt the rice
2 - I didn't realise that rice got bigger when you cooked it, and ended up with way too much.
3 - I didn't mix the eggs properly - I just threw it into the pile and mixed it up. Didn't read instructions proberly which said to put eggs in and to wait for them to cook, then mix them with the rice
4 - I don't think that bottle was soy sauce. I don't know what soy sauce is. It said 'sauce' on it so I figured what the hey.

I also don't think I used enough bacon.

Edit: I'm dying, gaz hahaha >_<

I must be making it wrong - I usually crack the eggs in once I've got the pre-cooked rice going with shitloads of oil in the pan...

Fried rice is super easy. Cook some plain rice (I use a rice cooker to make things even easier) and leave it in the fridge over night.

The next day, heat some oil in a pan, when it's hot chuck in a few eggs and mix them around. Once they start going solid start throwing in anything you want to eat with the fried rice (meat, vegies, whatever -- put the ones that'll take longest to cook in before the ones that cook faster). Then put in some soy sauce (a little, stir, taste, repeat until you've found the flavour you want). If you want other sauce (sambal maybe?), put that in too.

Done!

The great thing about fried rice is that it freezes pretty well too, so you can make a shitload at once, making for super easy lunches or dinners since they're basically TV dinners at that point.

I thought you weren't supposed to reheat rice?

next time I'll try not to ruin my otherwise decently cooked rice by using the whole lot at once directly after making it.
