Public broadcaster SBS has turned Australia's acrimonious asylum-seeker debate into hit reality-show programming, scoring its best ratings for the year last night with the premiere of Go Back To Where You Came From.

The documentary follows six ordinary Australians who have agreed to challenge their preconceptions about refugees and asylum seekers and embark on a 25-day journey that traces in reverse the journeys that refugees have taken to reach Australia.

The first episode in the three-part series aired on SBS One last night and was watched by an average of 524,000 viewers in the five major metropolitan areas (according to overnight ratings from OzTAM).

Seven's Australia's Got Talent won top spot for the evening with an average of 1.756 million viewers.

....

Sad, but as has been said by many people, being on SBS probably means this show isn't seen by those that most need to see it.

Would be nice to see other networks pick up the rights and have it air prime time but I won't hold my breath. To be honest a lot of the people who need to watch it wouldn't any way. That is part of their problem.

Exactly. But the major networks would never produce something like that anyway.

Just read that the mandatory Internet filter is still going ahead, and some major ISPs are voluntarily starting to trial next month. Ugh. If I could get ADSL in my area I'd cancel Optus and tell them it's because of that.

That's my issue with the show, that despite its great value it's ultimately preaching to the converted (SBS viewers). Bogan types who never deviate from 7/9 will never know it existed, and 10x the effect will be felt in the opposite direction next time ACA/TT throws out something appropriately asinine and inflammatory.

But what the fuck else are they going to do? The only other alternative really was that it would never get made

The best is maybe to release it on YouTube/promote it from their site later and social network the shit out of it, because the commercial stations sure as hell aren't going to run it.

Of course, though more exposure could be found by just co-promoting it with the ABC. They aren't meant to compete.

I just finished watching it on the SBS site...pretty powerful stuff. The most disheartening thing about the whole show is that the youngest participant is also the most racist and least likely to change. She has a complete lack of empathy for the 'boat people' (hate that term), and I honestly can't see her changing.

Also holy shit at a couple of the participants basing their opinions on the sensationalist media, the complete lack of critical thinking skills is one of the scariest phenomenons revealed by this show.

My OoT should arrive tomorrow arvo.

It will be something to look forward to after an interview I will probably screw up. Haven't prepared shit for it.

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.

Not great - which is a shame, because it was a great game IMO.

I only played it on Wii and DS, probably should pick it up on something else but eh.

Was day one bomba. Was less than $40 to import.

Oh dear :/

To be honest it was sent out to die. A game like de Blob needs to be targeted towards parents and kids. There really wasn't enough noise made to force it through the Disney/Nic kids channels to make it seem like a great idea for a parent to pick it up for their kid. Great games will be ignored if they can't exploit a market to remain profitable. It also launched after the school holidays, wtf. Should have been releasing either now or just before Christmas. You can get the 360 version for $23 and it's been cheaper on Zavvi too.

Same here. Gotta suit up again and pretend I know what the hell the position is. Which I don't. At least I am the only applicant being put forward which will work in my favour.

MD of Gametraders just posted a comment on our story about Ocarina smack talking publishers!

Hi Everyone,

The logic behind selling this game early is that our stores take exception when publishers do exclusive deals with major corporations but they won’t offer the same deal to us, an an Australian owned company.

He talking bout the Ocarina EB thingy??

The thing is though, to the best of my knowledge that's something EB have cooked up themselves. It's not special edition from Nintendo. Even then Nintendo don't do special editions, collectors editions, dude-bro editions, explorer editions.

This Ocarina Edition is an exception to the rule. If Nintendo do a special edition everyone gets it as it's a generica SKU. Look at Metroid Prime Trilogy for example and the slipcase.

He's picked the wrong game to start that fight on.

PS: I really need comments on my articles .___.

I think it might be more of a pricing thing than the special edition. That's my guess at least.

The bigger specialist retailers and Big Ws of the world are probably getting a lower price per unit for buying in bulk. I suspect that's what he's shitty about.

Yeah that's true, they're offering it for $49 some stores. I believe the cost price on DS/3DS games is $46.70 something.

Not a lot of room to move.

Mafia II is great.

Looks great. Car control is great - in the sense that it is realistic, and that you really enjoy it when you do get to open up on a straight bit of road. Voice acting is sensational. It's humorous. The missions are pretty cool.

The texture quality is insanely variable.

Very linear game but looks incredible and the gunplay is fantastic, shits all over GTA. So much fun towards the end.

Serrels, did the price of Human Revolution just shoot up? Yes, Steam just added another $20 to it. FFfffff
Come on Jintor you should know this by now, Import Import Import! $42! Or Steam gift from the US or UK.

Serrells FWIW its not illegal to sell European games in Australia commercially AS LONG AS those games are already rated in Australia and are the exact same code.

Parrallel importing has been legal since i think 2005, music, movie and games all allowed.

it used to be illegal.

also from classification site

Will the Board provide the classification stickers?

No, you need to download the markings from the website and have the stickers printed through a third party.

nothing to stop GT doing that which if they aren't already, they could.

Also FWIW, gamelane is also a grey importer, gamelane.com.au. Entirely legal.

I've bought quite a few games from different stores here that have just had our ratings stickers slapped over the UK version of a game.

I always assumed that was the publishers doing in most cases.

Very anti-mom and pop stores but it has been happening since the 70s. Megastores have thrived because of it.

Now I feel bad for not picking it up :( I was waiting for the 3DS version which I'm sure was announced somewhere.

It doesn't have Shantae, everyone elses does, therefore it is crap :p
Best advice change your region to UK, more games on there.

I've seen EB doing that as well, they imported US copies of Layton 3 and put OFLC stickers on them. EB also put OFLC stickers on their import copies of Henry Hatsworth which wasn't released down here officially but was OFLC rated as G.

I'm about to be away from my PC for a while.

I think the voice acting in Mafia II is what will stay with me. That, and how curiously pleasant it is to get stuck in traffic.

In big stores like ASDA in the UK shit is crazy. But I think Big W are approaching that level.

Thanks for dropping the mad knowledge on the sticker situation.

I heard Jane Fizgerald talk about grey imports, I think what she was saying was that if you sell with no ACB rating on the game it's technically illegal. I didn't know you could just stick the rating on and sell it without issue.

Well I'm totally fucked because my degree is in Finance, and my interview for tomorrow is Tax which I know absolutely nothing about. I was tempted to chicken out and withdraw my application but then I thought I might as well just go to it and get some experience since I suck at interviews.

But still, I'm dreading that they ask me a technical question, and I have to say " You know what? I have no idea".

Snot the full video... unless you unlock it at a later stage. AFAIK the only version on there is one that goes for about 1-2/3 of the actual song.

I'm contemplating buying (digitally) the Genki Rockets album, too. I'm becoming a Japanophile! Or an Mizophile, depending on how you look at it.

Dammit. Let me heist in style.
