Sharia Law being applied in the private lives of Australian muslims carries about the same weight as Canon Law does for Catholics. The outcomes of any rulings etc. aren't recognised by state or federal courts, the police or anyone with any real power, so it means nothing.

But by all means, freak out and predict the collapse of Western Civilisation if you need to.

Except that the proposal under discussion seeks to change that weight so that Sharia is recognised in the legal system.

What they're asking for isn't okay and it never will be. They're not special and neither is any other religion in the eyes of the law.

The article is being inflammatory basically exclaiming "They're already doing it!" In fact, they are not, it's just what many religions in Australia do/can do.

There was also a proposal under discussion to introduce a sensible and consistent ratings system for all media, including video games as well as political parties for whom the issue of greatest import is hunting and fishing rights in national parks. People ask for dumb and unrealistic things all the time.

As far as I'm aware, any recognition of Sharia Law would be unconstitutional and struck down in the High Court. Also, I pity any politician who would allow such a thing to get through unnoticed.

I think I played about an hour of RDR before I went off and played something else.

If they release it on PC I'd probably finish it though...

Exactly. I am not in favour of a plural legal system, but getting a religious divorce after getting a civil one is hardly a threat of that. It is no different to a Christian church having their own divorce ceremony.

If mosques wanted to get together and charter religious schools, complete with qualified teachers, state government compliant curricula and that followed all the same rules and regulations Catholic and Anglican schools already do in this country, I would not be against them getting the same kind of Federal funding (it's Federal, right?) as those schools already do. It's only right.

That too. It might just bring an end to Federal funding of religious schools, which I would also be in favour of.

Agreed VKS. It is only fair.

As for the other stuff, it's media fear mongering, which is about all they're good at these days (besides just making stuff up). I'm surprised Muslims in Australia are so calm, cause boy does the media give them a hard time.

That'd be a HUGE reform that'll probably never happen and put strain on the public system to boot. Schools run by religious institutions are subsidised by the government, but the rest of the cost burden goes to parents and the institutions themselves. If those schools shut down, you have an exodus into the state system and the taxpayer foots the full bill for their education.

And that would be fine by me. I do think there would not be an exodus though, private schools were very popular before they started getting federal funding, and would remain so. If there was federal funding directed to state schools that would be a better use of the funds in my opinion. Hell, I would quite happily pay some extra tax to ensure high quality public education.

Bill Hunter 'gravely ill'
MURIEL'S Wedding star and Aussie screen legend Bill Hunter is gravely ill with cancer, his manager has revealed.

Mark Morrissey contacted Channel Nine's Today show this morning to break the news of the 71-year-old actor's declining health.

"Sadly, he has cancer, and it's inoperable," he said.

"He was admitted to a hospice a couple of days ago."

Hunter got his start in the entertainment business in the 1960s, appearing in numerous TV shows, including Dr Who and Homicide, but his big screen break was in the 1978 film Newsfront.

His profile rose with his turn as the put-upon Major Barton in Gallipoli but it was his roles in Strictly Ballroom, Muriel's Wedding and The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert in the 1990s that really won over audiences. Indeed, he seemed to be the Australian film industry's lucky charm.
He often played strong, opinionated Australians whose rough exterior hid a soft heart.

Most recently, he finished work on The Cup, playing famed Australian horse trainer Bart Cummings.

It's weird, but you can choose to do the prologue completely out of order, and you choose the order through dialog choices. I could see that being confusing if you didn't realise what was going on and started in the middle.

Nice, where'd you get this? Just starting to get into Radiohead and really enjoying TKOL.

Witcher 2 will be downloaded when I get home, can't wait. Along with LA Noire and Terraria, not going to have much time for anything else, and it's going to suck trying to choose what to play!

EDIT:

Also, I have a bunch of games on Steam to give away, I checked my list of spare copies and had more than I realised. I'm at work and can't remember what they are, but I remember Deus Ex GOTY was there, and I have 2x Terraria.

EB Games are still waiting till tomorrow to release LA Noire.

Game Traders in Chadstone sold a copy. I called them up and asked them. They denied it. Then when I said I had an image of the receipt in front of me they caved and admitted they sold one by mistake.

Poor bastard must have thought I was someone from Rockstar ready to bring fire and brimstone down on their asses.

Case closed.

Technically, you're already playing LA Noire.

Several things:

- Being chums with IT staff gets you free stuff to help fix your home PC.
- Running into your old boss whom you sent a sternly written letter of resignation and then running into him at your new job where he's trying to secure a contract and it's the one day you're wearing fancy clothes (even though you say you're proudly working class) and he looks like a homeless dude can be awkward.
- Just placed a pre-order at JB for LA Noire on PS3.
- There isn't any time in the next month to actually play LA Noire on PS3.

Been pondering all day how to celebrate membership and my 300th post but now its 30 minutes before home time and i have no idea.

What English word retains the same pronunciation, even after you take away four of its five letters?

When I used to work at EB Games it was usually other retailers that would break street date. We had to get proof via receipt and fax that into head office before we got the go ahead to sell the game.

One time this occurred with the nearest GAME store. The manager went in, bought the game and then sent in the receipt. About an hour later we had the go ahead to begin selling. About another half hour after that we got a call from another EB Games store wondering why the hell we're selling the game early. The nation wide email was sent shortly after that.

Radiohead website. They're still taking orders.

Also, that english word thing seems to be one of those things you just know because it probably would have taken me a day to figure that out lol.

There's only 26 possible pronunciations to run through in your head, though.
