Question.

Halo 4 is due November 6. Which I believe is cup day in Melbourne.

Does that mean we'll get it on the 5th or the 7th?

Of course the 7th for anywhere that is closed on the 6th. They aren't going to allow them to put out a game out a day early in a single state of Australia. Besides, wouldn't most game stores be open on the 6th anyway?

I asked the guy who runs the Xbox Australia Twitter account, he said it was a worldwide release of the 6th and when I asked him about the 7th he didn't respond. I don't think they've thought it through very well.

Also, technically, isn't Cup Day only a public holiday in Melbourne itself? Rural Victoria still works that day, right?

Midnight launch will negate the public holiday. It isn't uncommon for places to open on Cup day.

Also we took the local race day as our public holiday first week of May. We took Melbourne Cup last year and hopefully head office forgets again so we can take two days off for stupid racing!

Not sure.

Hopefully JB is open.

They'd definitely be open on a day like that in Sydney. The only public holidays retailers tend to observe here are Christmas and Good Friday. Some places might observe half-days on other public holidays sometimes too. I'd be quite shocked if Melbourne would be different for Cup Day (which works perfectly for a half day too).

Cookie, do you like girls with nose rings and lip piercings reading clash of kings? Because is one sitting across from me. From the look of a 'tattoo parlour' brochure, shh e might be bragging into the city to get a tattoo.

On other news, sky is cloudy in Melbourne. Anyone been to Mrs Parmas? I'm going tonight. If so, is it good. I've heard it was expensive

Yes. I'm down with that look. Probably too young though, like most of the hot / cute girls on public transport. All the older ones are taken or just look grumpy as fuck.

Human Head must have signed a shitty deal with Bethesda for Prey 2 if they haven't touched any work on it since November. Will turn into another Rogue Warrior piece of shit unless Bethesda can pass it along to a half way decent developer this time. Hope that the new Human Head title can keep them afloat because their Prey 2 looked amazeballs, exactly the kind of game I want to see more of.

I get the feeling zenimax got scared of an open world title that could have been trying a little too much on top of having the title "prey 2". So they are going to wait and see if dishonored actually sells well since it's another open world do as you want title. If it succeeds expectations then I honestly expect prey 2 to be renamed to something more fitting and development continued with a release date in 2013.

I read it! I just can't click links on my phone :( big tea fan, I presume. Haha.

I'm quite passionate about a few things, and tea is one of them, as strange as that may be.

A shame I couldn't get more people interested in one of my other passions, RPGs. If anyone else wants in please let me know, as it stands only 2 people mentioned an interest and 2 more are needed to start a game.

Aw man. It looked so damn good. Bethesda are rapidly turning into a major bunch of cocks. Actually thinking about it they might have been that for a while.

That time I said that Apple must be smarter than we think to not settle with the ACCC, they must be planning to make a good point? Turns out I was pretty wrong about that: http://www.zdnet.com.au/apple-seeks-to-redefine-3g-as-4g-339336283.htm

In Apple's latest defence filing, according to the report, Apple states that it believes the 3G networks run by Telstra, Optus and Vodafone "are 4G networks in accordance with accepted industry and regulatory use of the descriptor '4G'".

There is sort of a minor technical argument to be made that Telstra's current 4G implementation is not fast enough to be 4G. I don't really understand it, but you can read about it on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G#3GPP_Long_Term_Evolution_.28LTE.29 .

Apple seem to have gone right off the deep end and are claiming that Telstra's 3G implementation is actually 4G.

There is such a thing as having too much money.

Today is one of those weather days where i could go something hot for lunch, maybe some chips. Soup with bread would be the perfect option but that's not going to happen.

Apple being Apple I guess. Should be interesting to see how it pans out.

The standard for real 4G I believe is 1Gb, which I think LTE+ (might have the tech name wrong) is supposed to support. It reminds of the definition of broadband amongst ISP's.

edit: this explains it better http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LTE_Advanced

The guy he quotes is crazy. "Why don't we invent something to overcome the problem they talk about?" Science isn't magic, dude.

I find myself nodding my head as I read this article. This frightens me.

One of the unexpected consequences of mass educational attainment in the 20th century has been a loss of respect for the notion of expertise. One would have thought, with the near universality of post-secondary qualifications and the benefits of the Information Age, enlightenment would be in the ascendency. In one of the disturbing paradoxes of our time, the opposite is true. On climate change and many other issues, we have become an expert-free society.

I hadn't really thought about it that way before.

Yeah, and the point is that most people don't think that through. The general idea that everything is always getting better and better and that humanity is awesome is what a lot of people are brought up with. If science then tells people that they have to rein it in a bit, they're understandably in disbelief, because it's completely counter to their worldview.

Also the last two paragraphs were great:

Madman Latham said:
At the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, there were two great socialist goals: widespread economic ownership and universal education. The first has produced a highly materialistic society (undermining traditional left-wing values of compassion and collectivism), while the second has, perversely enough, encouraged anti-enlightenment on climate change.

The challenge for progressive politics is to develop a post-left future that addresses the contradictions of left success. Manne’s journey left-right-left has shown how the smartest of people can move with the times, adapting to new evidence. He and his colleagues, the best of the progressive intelligentsia, have a mountain of work to do. The failure of the left to win the climate-change debate should be the catalyst for a post-left movement, abandoning the moribund assumptions of green-left politics and starting this ideological project afresh.

My PS3 is busted, won't read discs properly (just spins up and stops continually, eventually reads the disc after multiple ejects). It's well out of warranty (2.5 years old) and this seems to have happened in transit. It was working perfectly before I moved and on the receiving end here, it's now borked.

Who is the best person to fix this (Melbourne preferred)?

I was under the impression that the one Telstra is using is the one that can support up to 100Mb, not 1Gb. There were a few "Eh, this isn't real 4G" articles around when Telstra first announced it. Which obviously makes Apples claims even less defensible.

Is there a definition in Australia of what "4G" actually is? As with "broadband" being 256Kbps and above, and "high definition" being 576p and above, "4G" could be just about anything.

Yep, I think the one Telstra is using is classified as 3.9G, or maybe 3.5. Either way it's not true 4G. Apples claim is laughable.

The technical definition is an international one provided by these guys: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITU-R . The definition that is likely to be more relevant in court is what "a reasonable person" might consider 4G and what they might assume is meant by a device being labelled as 4G. It's safe to assume that "exactly the same as 3G" is not something a reasonable person might think.

Never been a fan of Zenimax, they cheap out on QA and set fucked up requirements for bonuses that developers need to make the project worthwhile. The case of New Vegas where they pushed it out before it was ready is just the icing on the shitcake for me in regards to them. All their games for me are Day 365, GOTY edition for $40. Although Oblivion was a snore fest so not sure if I will even give Skyrim a shot if I can't find some compelling mods to install with it. Also that Scrolls stuff was nonsense.

AWESOME VICTORY! They will be going after UseNet next anyway. Why not throw money down the toilet trying to stop piracy! I am sure people will stop coming up with new ways to pirate!

Noted crazyman Mark Latham, attacks both left and right and writes something brilliant: http://www.afr.com/p/lifestyle/review/climate_change_denial_not_just_for_sFAw16a7QU34KIj2tmN4eJ
Even a broken watch can stop shoveling horseshit into its mouth long enough to wheeze out a moment of clarity every now and then before going back to drizzling themselves in feaces.

is Kid Icarus worth it?
You missed the awesome Zavvi deal, LOGS has it for $47
