These folks aren't doing this because they've immersed themselves in Islam's intellectual and social potential as a doctrine and a faith.

These are largely yobbos with the basics. Who clutch the basics all the more tightly because they don't have the inclination or wit to get beyond them.

And ideology is probably too unitary a term. Islam is pretty diffuse.

I know it's diffuse, but the issue is this sort of grouping. They are yobbos under a particular ideology, not mainstream but still evidently not small in number.

As soon as you call for death, you lose respect in a civilised society. No doubt there will be imams who decry this event, but the ones who apologise aren't the ones at fault. The people who are to blame will remain anonymous and fan the flames when it suits them. These are the bad apples.

If you don't mind me asking, what's your background?

I've no issue with any race here. I have issue with hateful ideologies being bred out of particularly hateful imams and attracting angry young men with that message. Like the Christian lobbyists militant wing.

It's disgusting behavior and everyone there needs to be arrested, fined and treated like bikers with no association laws.

Background is Lebanese, born and raised in Australia.

One of the hardest things I've encountered in my short life time is telling people I'm Muslim, because I just don't know how they'll react. Unfortunately incidents like these do not make the situation any better for me and the thousands of others who call Australia home.

I think the footage tells a story, there are enough people walking away disgusted at what happened and a smaller number punching on.

I agree it will do damage to reputations, but if the individuals responsible are arrested and identified as a particular fringe group, that should hopefully prevent a misguided backlash.

I'm not racist but

Although, Islam isn't a race so...

Self editing here, but the behavior of these rioters is disgusting. Calling for execution over a film? What a backwards and hateful ideology if that's what it breeds.

Hopefully these people get arrested for inciting violence.

These protesters are an extremist minority. Their actions don't reflect the ideologies of the vast majority of Muslims.

Can't believe they're shouting things like "Our dead are in paradise, your dead are in hell".

Dead is dead.

I've got 2 good friends in Sydney who are from Pakistan, they haven't even heard about this protest.

In lighter news, I just received my code for the Project Fedora Kickstarter too. Mine is for ALL the Tex Murphy games. I already own them all on GOG and they are some of my favorite games of all time, so I'm happy to gift somebody who wants them.

Reply to claim them.

Some of the most disgusting scenes I've seen from this country. People, please don't judge us 95% based on the actions of those violently protesting.

Oh im not.

Its just for these morans if the idea is to stop people making fun of Mohammed, and view Islam in a positive light, then its essentially doing the exact opposite. Mind you the protestor type in this case and from what were seen in riots around the place seem to view fear and respect as equal goals.

Its also still kinda werid to see people actuall willing to kill over some damn video or cartoons.

Of all the things happening in the muslim world, that seems like the least of the problems.

All you need to remember is that for a lot of Australians your religion doesn't matter. Sure you might come across a few people saying something about Muhammad that may get you upset, or they're badmouthing Jesus, or using God's name in vain. But at the end of the day most Australian's will not give too much of a shit. 50% of the population is atheist. If they don't ask, they don't ask. But if they do ask, at least I would take solace in the fact that they wouldn't be blind enough to hate all religions because of it. If they are then they truly aren't worth the time and effort to re-educate them.

At least take solace in the fact that this poster from Brisbane QLD feels your pain and understands what you are coming from despite them not being religious whatsoever.

So I'm going to the Australia v Argentina match tonight. I also have a special disdain for Rugby Union that can only come from having spent five years at a GPS school still trying to relive a golden age full of 1st XV premiership glory that ended fifty years prior.

Any tips for surviving this?

Australia more than any country in the world is going to push back at the sentiment of death threats for films. Shock jocks are licking their chops right now over this.

The problem is this: people insult Islam, protesters retort with violence and death threats, so more insults are made. You cant respond to riots with backing down, or else you condone the tantrum like behavior.

If people responded to criticism of Islam with peaceful, ecumenical and thoughtful discourse, then you would see far less critical films or cartoons etc designed to provoke.

In the latter scenario the only criticism Islam would get in Australia would be when their own equivalents of Jim Wallace say something stupid.

Tldr, the protesters have done vastly more damage than expected and the 99% sadly have to deal with consequences.

Would love Overseer or The Pandora Directive!

Argentinian women are hot. Smuggle some booze in. Aside from those two factors it might be a rough night if your mobile internet doesn't hold up :/

Although the problem with Argentina is that they always try and walk it in. So maybe talk about that with people.

Muslim friends of mine are shaking their heads in dismay at the antics of these bogans of the Islamic world. Any excuse for a punch-on.

This is what I'm afraid of. More goddamn shock-jock-fuelled rioting making things worse.

I'm afraid of a counter demonstration.

About the only thing that will quell this is a love in by the socialist alliance.

Curiously, what's the name of the film that's causing these protests?

I remember the creators of South Park received death threats when they showed the Prophet in one of their episodes. :/

Innocence of Islam I believe.

Apparently many those involved weren't told what the video was going to be used for. A lot of it was heavily edited and dubbed to make it sound a lot worse than originally planned. A shame since their lives will surely be affected too.

So a Watchmen deal?

Perhaps.

In all seriousness there needs to be a family day event where multiple faiths, political groups, philosophers and intelligent speakers from each group try and get on top of this. Need to emphasise mutual respect where Muslims don't let the crazies steal the limelight and secular types argue for respectful criticism rather than incendiary trolling.

Death calls and provocative commentary are not equal crimes, but both should be easy to stop.

Moderation voices need to take control before extremists like Bolt and today's thugs suck all the oxygen up and fuck things up more than they are now.

Wife and son cuddled up on the couch watching Charlotte's Web with me in the bedroom playing Black Mesa.
Sneak into the kitchen, open the pantry and reach up for the chips. As soon as the pack crinkles on liftoff the little guy says, "Jooooooooooooooooosh".

"Just putting something in the bin buddy!"

"I don't believe you Dad."

o_O

Spoiler: I didn't give him any chips.

Shitty situation for the 95% for sure. I sort of feel like that about Americans, but the percentages are reversed. 5% of us are pretty cool, it's just the rest :)

But yeah, the boys I work with are worried about school on Monday because they are Kurdish/Persian, even though they are not very devout Muslims, they are worried about the reaction it will cause.

These last ten minutes have been ferocious by Collingwood. Great to watch.

Can't watch the game, at work :(
