Where were you in the theatre? I was about 2/3 back and had to seriously strain to be able to see the subtitles. And holy shit did that marketing guy totally explain Nintendo's poor representation in Australia. The dude had all the personality and engagement of a fucking bank manager.

Pretty good day overall tho. Got into the draw a comic panel in the morning just on a whim and it was really good fun. The concert tonight was ace as well, although from the sounds of the bored teenagers behind me, I got the impression that younger Australians have zero knowledge of NES music and found the Minibosses to just be annoying noise. I was in heaven tho.

I saw a bunch of you guys playing board games but had to run off with a friend of mine before I got a chance to say hello. Hopefully will run into more tomorrow if I go

yeah towards the back on the left. ended up just standing as we had bloody pillars in the way so couldnt read the subtitles lol.

but... TORTIMER!!!!!!!!!!

The other night I watched Man of Steel. If nothing else, it can proudly stand up and call itself a movie; that is an achievement that no one can take away from it.

I don't think I'm spoiling anything. I don't really say anything specific about the movie, just themes and stuff. It is probably likely that I say far less specific things about the movie than the trailer probably did. just in case, I'm going to create a wall of black.

I've often been accused of thinking way too much about movies but I really had trouble dealing with a movie that was basically telling me an allegorical tale of how science (at least eugenics-wise) and socialism is EVIL and freedom and God is AWESOME which is why America is pretty fucking rad and why both of those things (God and freedom) will always prevail. And there is no grey area or middle-ground there and no further discussions will be had. Heck yeah, muthafuckers!

Snyder and Goyer (and I'm not sure how much of a part Nolan played) were hell bent on portraying Superman and some pseudo-modern day-Jesus (and not subtly, either)... A modern day Jesus where he had a higher body count and caused more destruction than those that he sought to oppose, that is.

If you take all the changes they made to Comic Superman and added them to what remained you basically watched the story of a defenseless newly born that was sent by negligent parents to a random planet in a hope that he would be found by some hopefully-pretty-okay-in-the-least-people where he was raised by farm hicks to hide who he was and what he could do, be told that he probably shouldn't help people and should most likely fear them which messes with his head and turns him into a hobo (or fisherman, I couldn't tell if it was one in particular or just a weird hobo-fisherman hybrid) until he is confronted by Evil-Science-Eugenics-Communism guys who try to bring their non-American ways into Planet America so Superman, in order to avoid everyone being killed, most likely is directly and indirectly responsible for tens of thousands of people (or more) being killed/injured and billions of dollars of damage.

They then top that off with perhaps one of the most ham-fisted moral choice ending and placed a cherry on the top of that a really weird voice-over reasoning to try and get the Superman character back into the more traditional comic book status quo.

All in all, I rate it 10/10 FREEDOM AND GOD FUCK YEAHS!

In the Xbox one thing now. The montage was great, and they showed off the kinect thing very well.

Man Even with the kind of lame lack of Xbox one playable i was hoping from Pax Aus, Sony dropped the ball significantly. Don't think i've seen any mention of PS4 the whole time i've been here.

Played a game of Elder Signs with some randoms this morning. Great fun. Like Arkham Horror but without all the nasty setup and maintenance.

just got surrounded by enforcers and called "the definition of a jaded gamer" fuck them

Good effort on their part. Nothing like paying to attend a shit show and then being insulted for vocalising the fact. Fuck them indeed.

If the best part of the show is tables where you can play your own game then it's awful, or to use their words, "the definition of a shit show". There's plenty of other places where you can do the same thing and it costs nothing or very little in comparison.

Nintendo to buy atlus?

International Business Times
Will Hardware Maker Nintendo Acquire Software Publisher Atlus?
http://www.ibtimes.com/atlus-prize-...nufacturer-nintendo-acquire-software?ft=c69n9

just crazy speculation i think based on not much other than working with nintendo. Other companies I guess they are going to buy are Namco and Platinum.

I wouldn't expect one of the hardware manufacturers to be interested in the company as a whole because they would be buying a bunch of publishing shit they don't need.

Maybe if it gets down to a thq style ip sell of they would get in there but nintendo has plenty of it's own franchises that have the sales potential of atlus games that they already don't makes games of.

More likely to see somone like gungho, Marvelous or even koch media buy them imo.

So do you have any photos from PAX?

Thesis work in progress:

Lots of randomly generated spiders

Need to fix up relative abdomen positioning, curvature, fangs and some other minor shit, but it's coming along well so far.

Why would you do that? And this:

is totally a tick not a spider. Which makes it worse.

but ever so delicious

1. So I can graduate from Honours!
2. They're different each time you F5. But yes, the Abdomen offset is something I'm working on now. I might put the Abdomen underneath the cephalothorax too.

Yeah, I tried to get a page with no ticks and couldn't. Spiders I don't mind any more, I've gotten over my phobia, mostly, I can pick them up as long as they are not large, I can trap and move them as long as they are not aggressive or poisonous, so much better than when I had to leave the room for anything larger than a daddy longlegs. But ticks? Fuck that.

Anyway, cool thing, I guess. Was the project doing procedure generated content in general, or arachnids in particular. I need to know who to blame for the ticks ;)

The project is using an interactive genetic algorithm (IGA) as a treatment for spider phobias. Basically a "genome" is generated, like "40543636456", a string of characters. One component of the code I'm writing (which you just looked at) is the mechanism by which each genome gets converted into a solution, in this case meaning a picture a spider. Each character in the genome corresponds to some characteristic, "leg length: 9, abdomen size: 4" etc.

A normal GA has a "fitness function", a way to determine how "good" each generated solution is. Then it selects a bunch of genomes to "survive" and pass on their genes to a new generation of solutions, mutating and breeding the solutions along the way to mimic evolution by natural selection. An IGA is like this, but it deals with things that have subjective fitness value, like art, or in this case, how scary a picture is. A bunch of spider images will get generated, people will be asked to pick which of them are scarier ones. Then, their selection will act as the "fitness function" and determine what the next generation will be. This means the next generation will be "scarier" than the last, and you'll get less stupid looking spiders over time as they get culled from the population.

Exposure therapies for phobia introduce people to a hierarchy of stimuli, the idea being you start out being not very scary, and then ramp things up from there as people get used to it. This system will act in an analogous way - running the IGA through it's paces is more or less the same thing as getting an exposure treatment. If it works, that's awesome because we don't have to build stimlus hierarchies or track down pictures to use, since its autogenerated. It also means that hierarchies are tailored to each individual user, since they might select spiders with different characteristics as being the scarier ones based on their own individual fears.

Okay, that's cool. Hope it works, exposure therapy is painful enough for people who are severely phobic. I approve this use of ticks and spiders :)
